White House flag flies at full staff as nation honors John McCain

MSNBC settled the conflict with the flag. The 48 hour timeline to have the flag at half staff is for former members of Congress -- lowered on the day of death and the next day. But, if the member is a Senator and died in office -- the flag stays at half mass from the day of death until the funeral. Obama had five senators died in office: and he had the flag at half staff from the day of death until the funeral lays the body in a grave.

So Trump went out of his way to insult the family of an American hero. Disgusting

BREAKING NEWS: The White House lowers the flag once again to half-staff. For the first time, my ideas are correct.
Good, but an unnecessary whoopsie.

Once again Trump proves to be a jerk. He raises the flag from half-staff and then is forced to lower it again by a reprimand of the toddler Trump. Folks that support him can live in the fantasy that something good for this country is coming from the fruits of a toddler all they want. Nothing good is coming of the toddler presidency.

Even that I am a Social Democrat, I respect the flag. Even that I am not a Vet, I support Vets with their service.

The US Flag code states:

"... In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff. The flag shall be flown at half-staff thirty days from the death of the President or a former President; ten days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. As used in this subsection -

(1) the term 'half-staff' means the position of the flag when it is one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff;
(2) the term 'executive or military department' means any agency listed under sections 101 and 102 of title 5; and
(3) the term 'Member of Congress' means a Senator, a Representative, a Delegate, or the Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico.

Which means the veterans know that 2 days is the norm and to extend that requires a presidential proclamation.

That information was really interesting. But, the White House is again flying the flag at half staff until the interment of Senator John McCain. You are showing and making your argument that former members of Congress gets the flag at half staff for 48 hours. McCain died as the current Senator of the state of Arizona, not as the former Senator of the state of Arizona. I see the present too, but we can just disagree. But the White House is keeping the flag at half staff until the interment.

I'll make it clear for you:

- There is no distinction between former and present - the duration is the same for both.

- There is no 48 hours.

- To extend the flying of a half-mast flag beyond the norm, a presidential declaration is required.

- Trump issued today a presidential declaration specifying the duration for the half-mast flag.

Good grief, man.

I'm learning a lot about flag flying today! Did Obama sign declarations when he called for half-mast for longer than 2 days?

I have no idea. Obama issued several declarations on half-mast that were out of the ordinary and in each one he specified the duration.
He may very well have issued proclamations on the day the death was announced which would have included the duration of half-mast.

My apologies here ... it's a proclamation and not declaration (sorry - (sigh)).

I did find info on Ted Kennedy where Obama issued a proclamation the following morning specifying that the flag would lowered to half mast for 5 days.
Ted Kennedy died late on a Tuesday night, the proclamation was issued withing some hours of his death.

"Barack Obama issued a presidential proclamation Wednesday, ordering that U.S. flags around the world fly at half-mast in honor of Sen. Edward Kennedy, who died late Tuesday night.
...
The flags are ordered to fly at half-mast until sunset on Aug. 30. ..."

During the Obama Administration, had five senators die during his administration. And the rule was, fly the flag at half staff from death till interment. The Republican House and Senate have their flags at half staff. The Washington Monument had their flags at half staff also. The Washington Monument, Congress with both chambers were flying their flags at half staff and the White House was flying the flag at full staff. The Washington Monument, and Congress had their flags at half staff without approval from the White House. The White House should have studied what to do after the death of John McCain. The Trump Administration insulted the memory of Senator John McCain.

Tying every moment between McCain's death and burial to Trump insults his memory.
Trump and what he does or doesn't do isn't the sum total of John McCain's life, but the media has yolked him to Trump for ratings sake.

Trump made brief statements and rightfully lowered the flag on the WH until McCain's burial. That should put an end to the constant Trump coverage in lieu of focusing on the departed but it will not.

Is it not strange, that federal buildings were having the flag at half staff past 48 hours: without a written order from the president of the United States of America.

Yeah....no doubt. Trump is a douche. Equaling Trump is the mindless empty headed hate filled ****s that use the flag and McCain, a man they themselves vilified when he ran for President, to further their own pathetic hatred.
