What's your generation?

What's your generation?

The generation shifts tend to vary based on source, but I was born in 1976, which makes me late-Gen X. I really like Nirvana.

My first new car was a 1976 Trans Am.Bought it right out of the showroom

I'm 29 which makes me a Millennial. I have a lot of respect for the Silent Generation, but Boomers come across as a mixed bag. I haven't noticed too crazy of a difference between Gen X and myself, and I don't know anyone from Gen Z.

You know me. :)

Boomer, but raised by older parents. My view of the world is closer to that of the Silent Generation. One quality that seems to no longer be taught as a virtue is being inconspicuous. Our society is worse off for it.

Sometimes it feels like Gen X is the real Silent Generation. You never hear about them, at least as a collective.

It really does feel like they were skipped over.

I believe the Silent Generation gets its name because of the expectation to be quiet and inconspicuous and to produce. A common phrase from that time is "children are meant to be seen and not heard".

That comment blew my mind. I knew I was older than a lot of the other students in college, but I never thought that I was in a different generation. I guess I do know some Gen Z people.

You forgot one -- Xennials.

That doesn't make any sense.

Your graph shows people in two generations.

There has to be dead cut off so people know which one they belong to.

Looks like I'm a millennial

Silent Generation
Born 1925-1942 (Age 72-89)

Baby Boomers
Born 1943-1964 (Age 50-71)

Generation X (MTV Generation)
Born 1965-1979 (Age 35-49)

Millennials (Generation Y)
Born 1980-2000 (Age 14-34)

Generation Z (IGeneration)
Born 2001-2013 (Age 1-13)

Something if off with the ages there. I'm Gen X, born 71 (6 years after 65, the start date listed) and I'm 48. That would be one from max in your chart, but as noted I'm 6 years from max. Max Gen X should be 54, me plus 6.

I just made the cut so would hate to disagree, but would it not be fair to say our parenting skills (as a group) fall far short of the previous generation? It seems there are some serious issues when it comes to mental health that wasn't as widespread with previous generations with today's youth.

Gen X was the latchkey generation. A time when the focus was on adults not children.

I lean toward "just more visible" in general on social ills. That could be due to media coverage and or circumstances changing.

Boomer/Gen X

Funny description I found:

What are millennials?
This is the term that most people recognize the most, commonly associated with avocado on toast, and 'snowflake' culture.

That's probably because we have too many baby boomers who grew up dependent on the government for their daily needs. If you've been on some form of disability - whether real or encouraged by a lawyer - or received one or several welfare programs for the last 40 years vs someone who has been actually working for the same duration, of course you will have a mixed bag.

That's a pretty ignorant statement using a very broad brush.

Apparently, I'm GenX (1966) but in no way am I "MTV generation". That crap looked cool the first day it came out but inside a week I knew it had killed rock and roll. One of my favorite bands at the time was J Geils and I saw their name flash across the screen. My eyes opened wide in hope that what I was witnessing would be the dawning of a new beautiful age of rock and roll. Then they started playing this bubblegum pop song called Centerfold. It wasn't so much a letdown for me as it was recognition of a distinct dividing line. People in my peer group were going to be forever divided by the "I like MTV!" group and the "MTV killed us all group".

It was probably a year after that revelation that I started to see guys walking around with popped up collars, sweaters warped around their shoulders and topsiders. It really was sad.

I was born 96, so either last of the Millenials or first of the Zs depending on who you ask.

I'm sure we've done this one before but there seems to be some generational tension in some threads at the moment. Where do you fall? And what do you think of the other ones?

Millennial. I tend not to think especially highly or negatively about any generation over another in particular. I don't think one generation deserves praise and worship while another deserves ridicule. I think every generation has its a**holes and idiots and that most of us in every generation are inherently rather selfish in that we want what's best for our respective cohorts. For example, just because some of your generation fought in a war once doesn't make you super extra special or not-an-idiot. You might be one or the other or both. Sorry. Just because you spent a lot of years changing my generation's diapers doesn't make you super extra special. All that stuff and your accumulation of more years doesn't necessarily magically make you not-an-a**hole or an idiot. On the other side of the coin, just because you're youthful and passionate and energetic and think you've suddenly figured out how the whole world should work... that doesn't make you not-an-a**hole and/or an idiot. You might be one or both. That's how I feel about it. No arbitrary special treatment or privileged status.

With regard to policy, I think we maintain social spending programs and tax privileges designed to treat older people much better than younger people, a lot of which I think is a holdover from a bygone era when senior poverty was a huge problem and young adult poverty wasn't. Now the reverse is closer to the truth, but we haven't adapted to that reality much at all.

Yeah, but just because you realized that it "killed" Rock-and-or-Roll.....you were of the generation that came of age when MTV greatly changed music and band appearance. I mean, the first video ever played on MTV was "Video Killed The Radio Star." So even MTV and the Buggles knew what was happening. You were probably just of the Metallica/Def Leopard crowd (blue jeans and t-shirts) like me. But still....Gen X. It also means that you have mutant powers. Mine is uber-arrogance. What's yours?

I knew this place smelled funny, but I can't believe there's so many old people here. I thought it was mold or something.

Here's the data from the poll with 56 respondents. I used the international red/blue color scheme instead of the flip-flopped American colors.
Gray is moderate/centrist and white is undefined/private/other.

In other words--water is wet.

If one was 10 instead of 15 when mtv launched, it was awesome.

I'm not including the years for each generation in the poll because even though we generally know what they are, they sometimes seem to vary by source and if you're on the cusp it's more of a self-identification thing anyway.

Silent Generation or Greatest Generation; I have a great appreciation for what they did in their lifetimes.
Baby Boomer; We were the worst generations of parents ever. probably why gen X is so quiet, lol.
Generation X; I think they will do the most good when their time cones.
Millennial ; Not impressed. They however have plenty of time to come into their own.
The one after Millennials; Don't know enough about them to make any comments.
