What Was The Last Movie You Watched and Rate it!

That scene, based on combat events, was well within bounds for a war film. It was cinematically true, even if not literally true. And you're just wrong about AA volume.
The Midway you said you prefer featured fully fictional characters, so I'm not concerned about quibbles over Best.

The Richard Best character in this latest Midway movie was pretty much fictional the way he was portrayed- they might as well have given him another name.

AA volume from the Japanese carriers was minimal- that is fact.

" The Model B turrets were nominally capable of 70° elevation to provide additional anti-aircraft (AA) fire, but in practice the maximum elevation was only 55°. The slow rate of fire and the fixed 5° loading angle minimized any real anti-aircraft capability."

"She was given an anti-aircraft armament of six twin 12-centimeter (4.7 in) 45-caliber 10th Year Type Model A2 gun mounts fitted on sponsons below the level of the funnels, where they could not fire across the flight deck, three mounts per side.[18] These guns fired 20.3-kilogram (45 lb) projectiles at a muzzle velocity of 825–830 m/s (2,707–2,723 ft/s); at 45° this provided a maximum range of 16,000 meters (17,000 yd), and they had a maximum ceiling of 10,000 meters (33,000 ft) at 75° elevation. Their effective rate of fire was 6 to 8 rounds per minute.[19][20] She had two Type 89 directors to control her 20 cm guns and two Type 91 manually powered anti-aircraft directors (Kōshaki) to control her 12 cm guns."

Akagi had the same AA layout. 6-8 rounds per minute is very slow- thats like 1 round every 8 seconds, and was nothing like the Christmas tree laser beams that were shown in the movie.

Your AA information is incomplete. And don't forget the carriers were surrounded by escorts, also firing. In any case, the most common Japanese fleet AA weapon had an effective rate of fire of 120 rounds per minute. "The Type 96 was the standard Japanese medium anti-aircraft weapon of the Imperial Japanese Navy, being mounted aboard practically every ship in the fleet."

This is my last post in this exchange.

Even if those guns were onboard, the fact that they had 15 round magazines that had to be handloaded meant their actual rate of fire wouldnt be as advertised.

Here is something you may also consider:

"Japanese carrier anti-aircraft guns and associated fire control systems had several design and configuration deficiencies which limited their effectiveness. The IJN's fleet combat air patrol (CAP) consisted of too few fighter aircraft and was hampered by an inadequate early warning system, including a lack of radar. Poor radio communications with the fighter aircraft inhibited effective command and control of the CAP. The carriers' escorting warships were deployed as visual scouts in a ring at long range, not as close anti-aircraft escorts, as they lacked training, doctrine, and sufficient anti-aircraft guns. These deficiencies would eventually doom Kaga and other First Air Fleet carriers."

The theoretical rate of fire was 240 rpm. The 120 figure includes the hand reloading every fifteen rounds. That's in the link.

i have not seen this movie, but based on the following review, i intend to:
The Restrained Genius of a Joe Pesci Performance - The New York Times

The Restrained Genius of a Joe Pesci Performance
Hollywood never really knew what to do with the actor and so it put him in broad comedies. But “The Irishman” shows what we’ve been missing for so long.
... Now Pesci is back in his first major on-screen role in nearly a decade: As the real-life mobster Russell Bufalino in Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Pesci carries himself with a quiet self-assurance. Russell is the one who discovers the truck driver Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) and converts him into a utility goon for the Mafia. Some of the most riveting moments between the two men take place when they make small talk while dipping pieces of bread in red wine, the power dynamic between them always evident.

As Russell introduces Frank to the reckless union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), David Ferrie (the bewigged character Pesci himself played in “JFK”) and others, Pesci plays him with an eerie, watchful calm. It’s not giving away much of the movie to say that, after gradually receding into the background in its second section, Russell re-emerges later as a much older man, his influence stronger than ever; Frank effectively becomes his lap dog. Without ever raising his voice or changing his methodical gestures, Pesci shows how Russell has altered the course of Frank’s life across decades. ...

Saw Ford v Ferrari this weekend. Excellent film. I was skeptical at first when I saw it came at 2 1/2 hours, but I was very surprised and what a great movie it was. Bale and Damon are both masters in this one. The story is compelling, the plot moves as fast as the cars, and the cinematography is spectacular. I recommend it with 5 stars. Gonna be some academy noms come out of this one for sure.

PS: You can take the kids. There is no gratuitous violence, profanity, nudity or sex. I know, I know ... how can I give it 5 stars then?

You must be a Michael Bay fan lol.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019) - IMDb - This is a companion movie to Breaking Bad, and sort of details what happened to Jesse Pinkman after the climactic shootout. It's really unnecessary and more like a fan indulgence than anything else. So-so and its good to see the old faces again, but really, there's no need for it. 6/10

Deadwood: The Movie (TV Movie 2019) - IMDb - Just like the previous movie, this is a companion piece to the HBO series. I never really got into it during its series run, so I ended up skipping through a lot of the scenes. I guess it's so-so, but in the end, it's unnecessary, just like the previous movie. 5/10

Did that Deadwood movie come out on HBO? If so, I'll look for it.

Yup, its on there.

The Crown season 3- I dont care much for the Royals, but I am a fan of history and I do learn a lot of stuff from watching it. Not bad, competently made, though it's sort of only mildly compelling. 6/10

Did you watch the Night Manager (Amazon Prime)? The Queen and the guy that plays her prince husband (it may be a different character) are both in that.

I highly recommend the Night Manager.

Downton Abbey, and was surprised to enjoy it. I usually find somewhere else to be when my wife watches the TV series but settled into a theatre seat with a large popcorn and no expectations I found it nicely diverting. Like a simple fantasy, the society both alien and familiar at the same time.

LOVED it. Surprisingly I guess but it was so well done and charming.

I'm hoping the movie is released (DVD/streaming) right before Christmas so I can catch it over the holidays.

Yeah I saw it last year, not bad.

Oops, it seems I wrote a review for a TV series on the movie thread. My mistake. :3oops:

War Machine (2017) - IMDb A satire based on General Stanley McChrystal and his tour of Afghanistan that got him fired by Obama after a Rolling Stone article came out. It's not bad, but heavy handed and meanders a bit. 5/10

Wow, I'll look for that. I was a fan of McChrystal. (Not so much of Pitt, hope he does a good job).

Did it go into his almost never eating?

It mentioned he eats one meal a day in passing. You gotta realize this is a full on satire though, so I wouldnt depend on it for accuracy.

I didnt realize it was satire. Thanks...better to have that expectation going in.

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"

9.95 rating

only reduction was due to the sad fact that Burt Reynolds died shortly before his scene could be filmed playing the character of George Spahn.

We saw Knives Out yesterday. Most of it was pretty good, loved Chris Evans (who wouldnt?), Jamie Lee Curtis, and Don Johnson who also looks good...he looks better as a silver fox than in his Nash Bridges days.

But the star, Daniel Craig was awful and really took the movie down with him IMO.

I have nothing against him, altho I'm not sure I've ever seen him in a movie, since I dont watch James Bond movies. But they gave him a southern accent and it was horrendous, painful. And unnecessary. Argh! And unfortunately his acting was just as stilted and painful.

So to me, the movie is only 2.5 stars, maybe 3.

Official Secrets (2019) - IMDb Movie based on a true story about a woman in British intelligence who leaks out an email to the media about the US manipulating facts at the run up to the invasion of Iraq. So-so. It doesnt break any new ground, though competently made. Lacks excitement though. 5/10

The Irishman (2019) - IMDb Scorsese is at it again with Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, perhaps for the final time together. It's about a guy named Frank who becomes a hitman for the mob, and his relationship with Jimmy Hoffa.

I gotta say, its 3 and a half hours long and some portions do drag a little. Some of the computer generated de aging is a bit awkward though, because these old actors have a hard time physically playing younger versions of themselves- stand ins would have helped.

In the end though, it's nice to see DeNiro, Pacino and Pesci do one last turn- it almost feels like a swansong for all the major players involved. Lots of the supporting cast was from Boardwalk Empire too. The whole thing is very similar to Goodfellas. 8/10

I saw a clip when DeNiro was on Colbert...I thought the un-aging looked terrible.

But I plan to watch it despite that. It shouldnt ruin the movie.

I've known Tracy Edwards since we were both a bit younger. I met her in Antigua when the two of us were working on charter yachts. Had a pint with her in London a couple years ago while visiting friends and family.

Five Stars

I recently saw the Lady and Tramp CGI remake. A completely unnecessary movie not as good as the original. It more-or-less closely followed the 50's classic - except where it diverged apparently solely for PC bullcrap reasons.

But it made sure to add a few of its own PC stereotypes. For example, the fat white male dogcatcher was recast as a obsessed yet bumbling cop bent on bringing down the protagonist who he actively stalked the entire film.

Yeah the de aging takes a while to get used to. In the first half hour it feels out of place, but you gradually get used to it.

Jurassic World (2015)
4.5 out of 5

Pros:
Good action
Good dialogue and actors

The one problem i have with it is InGen's existence in the movie. Now, i know i shouldn't try to apply real life standards into a fictional movie but i can't help it:

InGen should not exist because of the San Diego Incident in the 2nd JP movie. Lawsuits for public and private damage/injuries/wrongful deaths and the possible laws violated (illegal importing of a dangerous animal, negligence/negligent homicide)..the company would be bankrupt, the Feds may seize the company/it's assets and/or the Board members arrested for possible responsibility for the crimes i described.
