DEADPOOL

1/10 ... just awful.

I saw someone compare DEADPOOL to this old Ben Stiller skit and it is spot on:

Deadpool 2

I liked it.

Make sure you've seen the first Deadpool before seeing the second one. And you should be familiar with the X-men movies too.

Figured I'd watch some movies various Pythons worked in, so Yellowbeard. Then Jabberwocky (1977 one).

Both were funnier than expected based on many reviews. Hell, Cleese even called Yellowbeard the worst movie he'd worked on. But it was still pretty funny.

Watched Infinity Wars this weekend. Best movie I have seen in awhile. I wish the team behind it would take over the Star Wars franchise. 10/10

Solo: A Star Wars Story

70 foot screen, dual 4K projectors, Dolby Atmos sound

I liked the movie.

I liked the theater.

Han shot first. And this movie proves it.

The Butler- I stopped watching as soon as I saw Oprah on the screen. The whole thing seems so pretentious. 4/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1708135/?ref_=nv_sr_1
13 Minutes-
Historical German movie about the real life plot to kill Hitler. A German communist actually planted a bomb in the beer hall he was speaking in, but he left early and it detonated 13 minutes after. Okay movie, but it tends to go back and forth way too many times and is sort of heavy handed. 6/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0839938/?ref_=nv_sr_2
Out of the Blue
Kiwi movie about what seems to be a true to life massacre that occurred in NZ. With a nut going on a rampage that killed about a dozen people. Karl Urban is in it, but his part seems small. The cops also seemed to act like idiots in this one, though it is well made. 7/10

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt6948354/
Sarah Silverman: A Speck of Dust
Great stand-up routine. Hotels, laser hair removal, dogs, the origin of trees, the danger of unisex college bathrooms, Amber with hooks for hands, pillow talk, abortion, boarding school, and lots of other fun. From 2017, Silverman avoids presidential politics and delivers a clever routine in her wry, engaging way.
5/10

God's Own Country
The story of an unhappy young man tending to the family farm with his father and grandmother in rural England. Johnny Saxby drinks too much and satisfies his homosexual desires in brief, unaffectionate encounters. A young Romanian man arrives at the farm to help for a week of lambing and gives Johnny a new perspective on love, happiness, and vulnerability. The movie seems a lot like Brokeback Mountain, but is quite different. It's short (104 mins.) and very good.
8/10

Star Trek: Into Darkness
2013 installment featuring a new cast playing the original series' characters. An epic battle between Starfleet and Khan with great acting and excellent special effects.
7/10

Breaking the rules here, but I thought this was too good to ignore.

I'm popping in Vanishing Point, which was way before my time and I had never seen before. Upon inserting the Blu-ray, I was presented with two options: theatrical release or the UK edition.

Naturally, I became curious.

I found this:

"If one believes the information on the internet,*Vanishing Point*has been edited for about seven minutes briefly after wrap. Those seven minutes basically include one scene with Charlotte Rampling who plays a hitchhiker. Apperantly 20th Century Fox was afraid audiences wouldn't understand the heavily allegoric scene and so it had to be cut."

Ha.

I call bull**** about the intellectual prowess of Vanishing Point (I vaguely remember something about a naked chick on a bike when I was an early teen), but I'll give it a go.

I just watched Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.

I honestly do not know how this won an Oscar. This bleak movie was a two hour slog about horrible people who are able to behave horribly without a single major consequence being visited upon them. I was amazed at how bad it was, especially for the caliber of the cast in this film. Now keep in mind, I think the acting was fantastic (though the writing and dialogue was God-awful). The problem is that when someone acts the part of a irredeemably hateful and unsympathetic sociopath, that doesn't somehow make me like the characters more or care about their struggles. I despise this film all the more not simply for the over-hyped praise, but the wasted potential.

All told, my score is 1/10.

Incredibles 2- While its great seeing the characters again and the aciton is good, I figured out who the main baddie was because the plot seemed like a rehash of the first movie. I'd still recommend it though. 7/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4250566/?ref_=rvi_tt
Fog in August- German movie about their euthanasia program. A kid is sent to an asylum during WW2 where they routinely kill off the sick and handicapped. Kinda depressing and slow. 6/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6738136/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Revenge- a California valley girl ends up in some sort of desert (Spain?) house with three French guys who rape her and leave her for dead. But she somehow transforms into Rambo and so the title is pretty much the plot. Unbelievable in some parts. 4/10

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 3D

I liked it.

The 3D didn't have any earthshaking standout moments, but it was nicely done and was a worthwhile addition to the movie.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado- Much like the first movie, but it seems they made the characters played by Josh Brolin and Benecio del Toro a bit more human this time. Some good scenes, though it feels like the same thing over again. Nevertheless, I would still recommend it. 7.5/10

I'm getting giddy for this release.

Ant Man and the Wasp- light fluffy superhero fare. It doesnt have the seriousness of Infinity War and its great for kids I guess. More of the same and the villains are also pretty mellow too. Michael Pena has the best lines. 6/10

The first post credits scene ties in with Infinity War. The second post credits scene is pointless.

I'll spoil the second one so you dont have to waste your time in the theatre having to wait for it.

It's just the giant ant on the drum set.

Ant Man and the Wasp 3D

I liked it.

The 3D was well done. Nothing earth-shattering, but it added to the movie. The 3D was particularly useful in scenes where the characters were tiny and flying, as it made them easy to differentiate from the background.

I concur with everything written about the movie by PoS in the post above this.

A Quiet Place- critics loved it, I thought it was meh and full of plot holes. The Mars Attacks solution at the end seemed pretty stupid too. A few effective scenes at the beginning but that was it. 5/10

Some nitpicks:
- why would the woman get pregnant while those things were around? There's plenty of contraceptives.
- why did the family live in such an exposed farm with lots of creaking wooden paneling and all that?
- if the creatures only detect sound and it was safe to shout at the waterfalls, why didnt the family just build a shelter and live at the waterfalls?
- the news reports said the creature was indestructible yet it was killed by a single shotgun blast?
- The Mars Attacks weakness is pretty silly- how come nobody else thought about it until then?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4686844/?ref_=nv_sr_1
The Death of Stalin- another one that the critics loved. An all star farcical comedy about the Russian government dealing with the fallout of Josef Stalin's death. Despite all the big named actors in it, I didnt laugh a single time. 1/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443559/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Killshot- based on an Elmore Leonard crime thriller about an assassin played by Mickey Rourke and his dumb partner played by that guy who I forgot his name. They team up to try to silence a couple who saw them shoot up a real estate office. Another all-star cast, but ruined by a predictable script. 4.5/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1677720/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Ready Player One- big meh from start to finish. It got boring at the end with too much of the same stuff going on. 3/10

what you expect from a mission impossible movie starring tom cruise

wooden while trying to be exciting

Pitch Perfect 3

I didn't have high hopes but even my low expectations were too high. I should have just watched Pitch Perfect for the 2,456th time and called it a day.

Phantom Thread: The UHD disc was great. Visuals impressive, sound clear as can be. Story had challenging characters and you weren't sure who you sheerly disliked or disliked more. Then, the ending was satisfying. 8/10

Black Panther: The UHD disc was a bit of a downer to me. Marvel has been shooting their actors at 4-6.5k resolution, but renders the CGI at 2k. The compromise they make then is to largely master their content in 2k and upscale it to 4k resolution. So you can still see the shine that 2k puts on everything rather than the more subtle finishes of 4k. The sound quality....I dont know. Was it satisfactory in bass? Sure. But everything sounded muddy as hell. Disney masters their movies quiet, so you do have to turn it up a good bit. Even still, I felt like my ears were plugged for the 2 hour running time. I guess this is their vision for people with sound bars? I heard a lot of Marvel films are that way.

The story itself: enjoyable, flirts with subversive themes quite openly. The world by itself is great. The villain was great. But at the same time I was not feeling the hype. While DC is struggling (and I haven't seen DC since Man of Steel--which I liked), Marvel is succeeding. But its movies feel somewhat stale no matter what they do. Their tv shows are great though.

I am going to withhold a rating, because I don't know how to feel about it yet.

Throne of Blood- My first introduction to a cinematic classic. Criterian's Blu-ray is fantastic. Enjoyed every minute of it and was wanting it to be longer. 9/10

Either Hotel Transylvania 3 or Deadpool 2 (can't remember which I watched on which days).

HT3 was okay. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but still would have rather not seen it in theater (MIL talked me into it).

Dp2 was good, hilarious. I had some major issues with the plotline though. Ugh. Like I said, movie was good except for my personal feelings on personal actions/reactions of characters who you know are part of the universe but not in the movie. I don't want to provide spoilers. I'm really just an idealist about comic books and certain people and how I feel they would react to certain specific events, and it doesn't mesh with what the movie went with.

Netflix's Bright. I'd say a 3, it was decent, didn't want to turn it off, somewhat interesting premise (although they didn't really explain a world where fairies, orcs, elves and others lived in the world together), like most action movies a little ridiculous

I liked it okay, but thought it would have made a much better series.

Watched a bunch of old movies, some I barely remember from my childhood.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050280/?ref_=nv_sr_2
Curse of Frankenstein - the old Hammer horror movie that started it all. I watched this when I was a kid on VHS or BETA and forgot about it, and Im surprised by just how small scale it is now. 4.5/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051554/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Horror of Dracula- Hammer films was able to transition the old school monsters into the modern age with this movie. Like the previous Frankenstein, I was once again surprised how un-epic this movie was . Still better though. 5.5/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1454523/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Black Bread- Spanish made film about kid growing up during the fascist era, and about a murder. It seems every Spanish coming of age story is usually about fascists, and discovering lies about one's family. Well made though. 7/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105275/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Romper Stomper- the movie that made Russell Crowe a star.He plays a racist skinhead in Ozland. Not bad, though it seems the direction is a little stagey at times. 6.5/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5776858/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Phantom Thread- didnt finish. Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor, but the charcetr he plays is so stiff and loathsome I didnt want to keep watching and turned it off after 20 minutes. n/a

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108399/?ref_=nv_sr_4
True Romance- finally saw this movie in its entirety. I never liked Christian Slater, which is why I didnt bother to watch this movie before. Some parts are good, like the all-star cast, but the whole movie is silly and makes no sense. 4/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100150/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Miller's Crossing- I watch this movie at least once a year because its simply that good. I think its the Coen brothers best movie. The complex story of gangsters and the war between two factions is excellent. I had to initially watch it twice the first time in order to fully understand what was going on, but now it's simply flawless after every rewatch. If you love movies, you've gotta watch this one. 10/10

Yeah, I'm not even sure I'd give it 5/10. It was filled with trope and stupidities, especially the thing you first identify within the spoiler tag.

My wife said something like "oh, what the ****? Are they supposed to be Catholics?" (Nevermind about the whole getting pregnant thing. I suppose survival instincts might come into play, but "oh, everyone else is dead and if we make a sound we will be too" isn't exactly .....err.....exciting)

There are also more mundane things, such as.....nobody in his family farted loudly in their sleep the entire time? Gotten food poisoning? Failed to fight just the one sneeze off? The whole stay-silent thing is an interesting premise for a movie but it doesn't make any realistic sense over the entire time this family is supposed to have survived.

I suppose I could list more nitpicks

- The kids take it seriously enough to be shown flitting around a store quietly, but somehow the kid decides he's going to turn on a battery operated plane? (If my parents told me that if I made a sound I'd die like our pet cats did, I'd forget about rebelliousness right then and there).
- There just had to be an exposed nail.
- The woman knew to be absolutely quiet but wasn't looking at where she was stepping at all times, so she steps on the nail?
- The little brother is drowning in grain, but somehow the sister can kneel on the metal, lean WAY over it, and pull him out with a single arm?
- The fireworks just so happen to go off at the precise moment the other person starts screaming?

It was a bit mess. Nonsense premise, abnormally stupid/self-destructive characters, and trope.
2/10-3/10

Then again, horror movies and/or thrillers rarely do much for me. Too much silliness. And besides, humans have done worse than we can imagine in fiction. If I want a true "horror" movie, I'll watch something like Schindler's List.
