Saw the wonderful indie film "The Florida Project" over the weekend. Basically told from the kids point of view, and that kids are kids, they don't discriminate. Willem Dafoe is great in this as the manager of the run down hotel which houses so many poor families and their kids. I think he makes a good successor to the late great Harry Dean Stanton as one of the best character actors around. Expect him to get an Oscar nomination for Supporting Actor. The kids gave a real good performance too. This is about the innocence of youth, and how much of adventure life is at that age, wherever you are.

L'odyssée (2016) - IMDb
- A French film on the life of Jacques Cousteau. I loved watching his documentaries as a kid because my dad was a diver and I ended up getting PADI certification and did diving for a few years too. I learned a few new things about him (his wife actually lived onboard the Calypso and the contentious relationship with his son Phillipe). The underwater scenes are spectacular though the movie tends to gloss over major events too quickly. This might have been better as a mini-series. 8/10

The Darkest Hour - 7/10. Historically accurate.. well somewhat. Will piss off some with black people in a key scene.. but /shrug. Good acting from all... Gary Oldman might just win the Oscar. So far the best performance I have seen of the group.

The Post - 6/10. Good movie, solid acting, but would have been better if it included Watergate. Granted that movie was already made, and this one did lead up to it... for those who see, go see All the Presidents Men right afterwards... you will get a satisfying feeling the first few minutes (think back to Rogue One ending).

Dunkirk - 5/10. Not a big fan. Too confusing with all the back and forth crap. However once you get past this rather confusing bit, then you have a pretty good and accurate as possible movie. Well shot.

Three Billboard...I can't even remember the rest of the title, I hated it that much.

The Girl on the Train (Showtime): 7.5 stars The book was recommended and I wish I had read that instead just because I think it would have been better. In alot of cases I dont mind reading books and then seeing the movies but for this one, it would ruin the suspense completely.

Gifted (HBO): 7.5 stars Can't go wrong when you can look at Chris Evans for an entire movie. But it was a charming story, mostly predictable but good twist where he seals the deal at end.

I cant wait to see that. Waiting for DVD or streaming at home.

I'm a westerns fan. Simple and plain, as long as they are well done.

Saw Hostiles one afternoon last week. Enjoyed this dark movie immensely.

This is streaming on YouTube, and it fared poorly in theaters because of lackluster promotion. I saw it on Netflix a month after it came out. In its entirety:

I suggest you watch it, if it is up your alley, on YouTube, the sound comes through more clearly.

I'd be interested to read your thoughts. If I have to expound on the myriad of things that bothered me, I'd spoil the movie!

OK. I like many in the cast. And I loved In Bruges, another black comedy of his.

But it will be awhile since I'll wait til I can watch it at home.

I liked In Bruges, too. VERY dark and totally unexpected for me.

thanks for the share
just finished watching this western
you did not oversell it

Darkest Hour 8/10 Gary Oldman was terrific.

Call Me By Your Name 7/10 Beautiful locale, great acting.

Three Billboards 9/10 Best movie this year imo

Like I said, I like westerns. Ed Harris was good, not his best, the actors did the best with what they had and it made no sense. But for free, who cares when there's time to kill. Not as bad as the Terror From Tiny Town, the all midget western made with the cast from Wizard of Oz. They walk under saloon doors instead of through them. Every western cliche in the book.

Hostiles was terrific.

Tried to watch The Hateful 8 but it was just Hollywood goofing......I lasted 27 minutes, which was ten too long.

Switched to Barefoot in the Park was was also nonsense but it possessed charm, and was also the best I have ever seen Fonda.

7/10

Red Sparrow 9/10 - Great spy flick. One of those movies where it is 2 hours 20 minutes long and you dont notice it at all.

Concussion- 7/10. In spirit, good retelling. Veers into traditional conspiracy cliches about 1/2 way through. When doesn't do so, it's good.

Recommended viewing if first exposure to the CTE controversy, but would suggest people view Frontline's documentary "A League in Denial" instead.

We binge watched three Francis McDormand films tonight. Burn After Reading, Friends with Money and This Must be the Place.

Burn after reading, with Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovich was funny as hell.

Friends with Money, with Jennifer Aniston and Joan Cusack was kind of cute. IMO, next to Fargo, this was Francis's best role until her recent Oscar win in the Three Billboards flick.

This Must be the Place, with Sean Penn was downright bizarre. Great acting by Penn though. You have to see that one to believe it. And, it is worth seeing, IMO.

Tomb Raider 7/10. Predictable story but well made and far closer to the game atmosphere than the Angelina Jolie ones. Of course Jolie had more realistic boob size but Vikander does a better job imo in getting the game character on to the screen.

THE MUMMY (Tom Cruise)

Terribly disappointing.
Not only were some scenes/effects copied from An American Werewolf in London, The Mummy (Brendan Fraser) and makes you feel like you're watching Indiana Jones....but it's got this convoluted story to boot with Russell Crow behaving like Jekyll and Hyde!

The worst Mummy version!

Thanks to both of you. I've got my eye on that one - being a western fan!

Last western I saw was an oldie, Stalking Moon (Gregory Peck), which I've enjoyed.
Looking for more western movies to add to my collection.

LBJ

Woody Harrelson is adequate playing LBJ though his prosthesis makeup is obvious. While much of the movie is pretty good, it glosses over and omits one of the major moments of his presidency, namely LBJ's political downfall over Vietnam. We also dont see much of his past life before he became a senator, so it sort of stops being an epic biography and instead just covers one aspect of his life. Good movie, but it feels like something is missing, and it is. 7/10
