What Was The Last Movie You Watched and Rate it!

Arrival (2016) - IMDb
A nice sic-fi drama. It wasn't what I expected, but nevertheless, it was a good, original movie compared to the usual space opera and stuff. Nice twist ending too. A bit slow in parts though, but that is normal for movies like this. 7.5/10

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) - IMDb
All the critics were giving this rave reviews, but it seems to be just another action flick for me. I like the Easter eggs, but the whole thing seems like a videogame. It's not bad, but not great either. 6/10

I agree. Arrival watch very watchable but didn't really break any new ground.

John Wick 2. Nope. Keanu continues to be an embarrassment to all of Canada, how he gets parts is amazing.

The original was a badly done remake of most of any Vin Diesel movies...and Keanu never seemed to realize that he was in an action movie.

Primer

Quite good, but you've got to pay close attention and it probably helps to had some exposure to sci-fi involving the subject.

Monkey Business (Marx Bros).

Burning Sands

This movie is less about fraternity and more about hazing. The NPHC released a statement last month decrying hazing, in response to this movie.

I was horrified by the events that transpired in this movie. Fictional, or not, I could not help but think abstractly about the struggles that younger people face in general, when they are initiated within society by older people, particularly as members of an organization or institution. So I looked up the definition of hazing and confirmed my hypothesis.

haz·ing
/ˈhāziNG/
noun
the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation.

Ok...having watched Primer a second time, it definitely makes more sense. There is a whole lot going on and you aren't shown quite everything. But it really is a brilliant movie once you finally get it.

And if you don't.....this generally sounds about right (SPOILERS - explanation of events):

Ghost in the Shell (2017): 7/10

Over the weekend, I went to see Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson. I never read the manga before, so it was interesting going into this blind.

The story was pretty average. Nothing too special about it. The main antagonist was not very compelling, either. It didn't really go as deep as I wanted it to. But it wasn't horrible at all, and I feel like I got my money's worth. Scarlett's acting was great as usual, as with some of the other actors.

But by far the best thing about that movie would have to be the visuals. The CGI and the special effects looked freaking amazing.

The Red Turtle (also called La Tortue Rouge).

4/4 stars.

Just saw Ghost In The Shell. Arguably the weirdest movie I've seen. Not sure if I liked it or not.

Alien: Covenant (2017) - IMDb
PROS:
-Michael Fassbender in dual roles
-Good production values
-Grotesqueness like in Alien: Resurrection

CONS:
-rest of the cast very uninteresting.
-predictable.
-characters do a lot of stupid things.

All in all, if youve seen the first two Alien movies this is just more of the same. I dont hate it, but I dont like it either. Seems to be a cross between Alien Prometheus and Alien Resurrection. Just meh. 5/10

Just for fun, we went to Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Great, silly, over the top, outlandish, ridiculous, everything you would expect in a Marvel Comic Book movie. It was fun. I also felt it was an unnecessary departure from the direction the whole Marvel Universe was building up to and the resolution of this particular story line left more questions than ever before. The Class 2 villains in the movie were IMO annoying and as it appears they are being set up as the primary villains in the next movie, it seems like a weird direction to take this franchise.

MY wife went to see The Circle...didnt really 'feel' it.

Wonder Woman (2017) - IMDb

PROS:
- Gal Gadot is hot
- did I say Gal Gadot is hot?

CONS:
- Very similar to the Cap America origin movie in regards to war plot
- weak villains

All in all, meh. 5/10

Guardians of the Galaxy 2. 7.5 out of 10. Very good. Predominately a comedy but still managed to pull some heart-strings.

The Pass.

Good script, very good acting. Highly Recommended!

Just rented Logan. Just starting it now. This movie looks badass.

The Transcendental Object At The End Of Time

7/10 - Very informative, and about the length 3 feature length films. The quality varied over the course of the video.

Patriots Day (2016) - IMDb
Deepwater Horizon (2016) - IMDb

Im lumping them both together because they have the same main actor (Mark Walhberg) and the same director (Peter Berg). Both movies pretty much start and end the same. In the beginning you get a montage of a bunch of people leading mundane lives, then a tragedy happens (which is well done and the best part of the movie), and then in the end we have more montages of people getting on with their lives. It just feels so manipulative in the end. 5/10 for both.

The Founder (2016) - IMDb
Michael Keaton is brilliant as Ray Kroc, the guy who made McDonald's into a household name. The movie however starts and sputters, so the momentum gets lost every now and then. 6/10

The Girl on the Train (2016) - IMDb
It starts off as intriguing, but then turns into a predictable mess at the end. Meh. Everyone is so loathsome and uninteresting in it that you really dont care for them. Gone Girl is much better. 4.5/10

Allied (2016) - IMDb
WW2 romance action with Brad Pitt as a Canadian James Bond (yes, really.). Marion Cottilard is a talented (and hot) actress and the director is the same guy who made Back to the Future. But the movie is a total mess. The actors dont gel, and the movie gets ludicrous as time goes on. 5/10

Cartel Land (2015) - IMDb
Documentary about the Mexican cartel, and vigilantes on both the US border and in Mexico. It's a gritty, no-holds barred look at what the War on Drugs has done to both countries. The only weak point of the whole piece is that it doesnt look at the macro aspects of the whole thing (the reason why the Cartels are so powerful is because the US is the #1 market for drugs in the world- but it barely addresses that). But if you want to really see how it is on the front lines, then you ought to give this a look. 8/10

The Mummy (2017) - Better than I had expected after hearing the reviews.. much better. Another time the reviewers are way wrong in my opinion. Sure it aint no oscar movie, but it aint no Battlefield Earth type cringe movie. 6/10 (action/sci-fi rating comparison)

CHiPs (2016) - Went into this not expecting anything. Grew up watching the TV series on Betamax smuggled into Saudi Arabia, so I knew what it was about. This version is not bad at all.. good comedy bits and actually a 180 shocker during the movie. Dax Sheppard is funny in what he does. 7/10 (comedy rating)

Power Rangers (2016) - Expected this to be bad, but was surprised. Acting was okay, story did not have many holes and the CGI was actually pretty good.. considering the crap the TV-series had :) 5/10 (action/sci-fi rating)

American Violence, which was poorly rated on IMDB, is a story about capital punishment.

This movie was graphic and very disturbing. It's a little bit like The Silence of the Lambs meets The Fate of the Furious. At times, the plot seemed jolting, but the story arc was what made me give it a 7/10 rating. In a time when popular films have taken a dark turn, this one blurs the line between anti-hero and villain. While it is not explicitly a horror movie, it is shocking, tragic, and incredibly violent. Emma Rigby does a great Southern accent.

50 shades of grey...terrible.

I knew this movie was in big trouble at the jump when an alleged great and greatly experienced Dom picks a long in the tooth virgin and did not even know it.

I thought this was a pro BDSM movie....wtf people, this movie was hostile towards the arts and overly negative.

And hinting that it is a continuation of abuse, and that maybe we should feel sorry for Doms??!!

That this crap got the attention that it did speaks badly of the once great USA.

I watched two movies about silence!

Silence (2016) - IMDb
With Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield about Jesuit priests in 17th Century Japan and the anti-christian crackdown. I'm not really sure what the message is or what the movie is about because its mostly about them proselytizing and enduring torture. I think its one of Martin Scorcese's weaker efforts. 5/10

The Great Silence (1968) - IMDb
A bleak and nihilistic spaghetti western with Klaus Kinski and Jean Louis Tritignant as a mute vigilante facing off against corrupt and brutal bounty hunters. Shown in Europe during the 60's, it never had a release in the US because of its controversial and shocking ending. A very good movie and I highly recommend it- as good as the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns. 8/10

My wife and I saw Wonder Woman tonight. It was pretty good, special effects were excellent and the young lady they put in the starring role is stunningly beautiful. She also was a very good actress. It also screams SEQUEL. It was worth the 26 bucks for the ticket.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) - IMDb
PROS:
- Michael Keaton
- guest appearances by Tony Stark and Happy Hogan
- Peter's best friend

CONS:
- Aunt May doesn't have much to do
- Simplistic plot
- uneven pacing

All in all, its better than the recent Spiderman movies, though Sam Raimi's Spiderman 2 is sitll the best in the entire series. Tom Holland isnt bad as the main character, though he could be better. Michael Keaton is as always, superb. 7/10

Lion - 4/4 stars. A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. Think "An American Tail" without adorable, singing mice.

If you are not crying at the end, update your empathy software to make sure it's the latest version number.

John Wick 2 - 4/4 stars. An assassin kills a lot of people. Buttloads of fun.

Kong: Skull Island - 2/4 stars. King Kong meets Pacific Rim meets The Mist. Bad cinematography creates for a frustrating viewing experience, soulless narrative, unsatisfying wrapup. Samuel L Jackson can't save this emotionless reboot. Will have you yearning nostalgically for the 1976 Jeff Bridges/Jessica Lange version.
