What Was The Last Movie You Watched and Rate it!

Swiss Army Man. Not bad in concept, but poorly-executed. 6.5

Hell or High Water (2016) - IMDb

PROS:
-Jeff Bridges and his sidekick
- desolate landscape
- Ben Foster is great as a career criminal

CONS:
- Too much music
- a tad contrived

About two brothers robbing banks in Texas trying to raise money to save their mother's farm. It's sort of like a poor man's version of No Country for Old Men since there's no Anton Chigurh around. In the end it's entertaining, though not a masterpiece. 7/10

Ben-Hur (2016) - IMDb

WTF did I just watch? This is pretty terrible.Stick to the old version with Charlton Heston, that one is a timeless classic (it was the one movie my granny allowed us to watch on Christmas when we were young, she said we could only watch bible movies, so we always chose Ben Hur). 2/10

The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Eccentric and then some, but you know, I discovered I quite enjoyed it's oddity. I dunno....7/10-8/10.

Strangely good and I'm not sure why. No comment on whether or not I was celebrating one of MA's recent votes...

War Dogs (2016) - IMDb

Movie based on a true story about two kids who managed to defraud the Pentagon by supplying them with illegal weapons worth millions. It shows just how truly disgusting the military industrial complex really is and where everyone's tax money goes. It's like the Wolf of Wall Street, except its about arms dealing. 8.5/10

Reviewers mostly called it trite, it was a commercial failure in spite of gaining some star power in James Woods and Mary-Louise Parker, but I found it very enjoyable. The charisma of the unknown lead actor is off the charts.
7/10

Pretty much the perfect escapism movie, works on many levels, has a bunch of actors that I like.
10/10

Got knocked for not being strongly enough pro-feminist but is well crafted and relatively lively. I tend to like period pieces so if you are not deduct a point or two.
6/10

Saw LA LA LAND on Tuesday and liked it a great deal. The ending was perfect and made the entire film. I do not think its the greatest film of the last decade or anything like that but it is very good in all respects.

Django Unchained 9/10

I have never been more carnally satisfied by observing the bloody and violent vindication of an oppressed person than when I watched this movie. I am wondering whether or not there is any measure of revenge more gratifying than murdering the family of someone who has attempted to perform castration on oneself. I compare it in that respect to American Mary and in another respect to The Illusionist.

I was impressed by the nuances of slave ownership in this movie, by both free black men as well as white men. Perhaps the political contrast of light and dark skin colors is reminiscent of the visual style of German Expressionism. It's more of a Western style movie, but I can appreciate the contrast.

For example, consider this scene in which Django slays "Big Daddy." There are several perspectives here. We are shown what Big Daddy looks like from the gun sight, as well as the two men hiding in a tree. Additionally, we are shown what "Big Daddy" looks like from the ground as he falls from his white horse in the middle of a chaotic raid illuminated by firelight.

Rurôni Kenshin: Meiji kenkaku roman tan (2012) - IMDb

Watched this the other day. (All 3 movies)

Great live action version of the anime. My only issues with it was that the Sanosuke character was poorly done and the couple of times they tried to bring in the supernatural powers. Those made the film feel a bit too cheesy and took an extremely good movie and made it feel like a B movie. If you can overlook those flaws, it has very nice sword fighting and a very good story.

I also watched:
Sicario (2015) - IMDb

I really enjoyed it, I have always been fan of Benicio Del Toro.

The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Im a huge Wes Anderson fan. All of his films have that same odd and artistic quality that I really enjoy.

Fanatastic Mr Fox was one of our Family favorites when my Kids were a little younger. Moonrise Kingdom is also excellent and Rushmoore is one of my all time favorite movies

Rushmoore was filmed in Houston not far from where I grew up

Fences. God Awful.

Arrival (2016) - IMDb
A nice sic-fi drama. It wasn't what I expected, but nevertheless, it was a good, original movie compared to the usual space opera and stuff. Nice twist ending too. A bit slow in parts though, but that is normal for movies like this. 7.5/10

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) - IMDb
All the critics were giving this rave reviews, but it seems to be just another action flick for me. I like the Easter eggs, but the whole thing seems like a videogame. It's not bad, but not great either. 6/10

Saw THE GREAT WALL.If you liked the eye candy in THE TWO TOWERS - you will like this film as the influence is there in everything from scenery to costumes to armor to weaponry and battle flow. No great story with lots of plot holes and Damon is only so so as the lead..... but if you are anything like me and love epic fantasy and lots of eye candy - its well worth the ten bucks to see it in 3D.

manchester by the sea
well acted
nice photography of fishing community
no plot. no excitement. no meaningful experience
for the same time and money would rather buy a six pack of good beer and watch clouds for two hours

Britney Ever After.

Excellent acting and historically accurate in it's portrayal. I'd say it's the movie of the year.

Saw La La Land last night. It is a really good two hour long LA tourism commercial with singing.

Arrival : Good but could have been so much better : 7/10

Manchester by the Sea : the Affleck guy is amazing, the script should have been better. 8/10

Hell and High Water : good movie, but still playing it safe with cliches and social norms. 7/10

Saw it a month ago and really liked it. The ending was terrific and really sealed the deal. Hope it wins Best Picture.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) - IMDb
True story of a pacifist medic who saves 75 men without firing a gun in WW2. The first hour is very boring, very basic. The second part, which takes place in the battle of Okinawa almost delivers. Mel Gibson is great at directing battle scenes, but there is something missing in it. 5.5/10

Hidden Figures (2016) - IMDb
The hidden true story of how a small group of black women overcoming adversity to help NASA during its early years. Yes, its a typical Hollywood feel good movie. Yes, the plot is predictable since we all know what happened. But its a damn fine movie and hits the right spots. 8.5/10

American political thrillers really tend to be pretentious, yet are terribly, terribly unserious films. Often they are laughable.

State of Siege (1972)-Costa Gavras

Another political film by Costa Gavras [Z (1969), The Confession (1970)]. This time Costa Gavras and Solinas target the U.S. involvement in Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s. I'm in the middle of the film and it is quite good--challenging to an American who isn't appreciative of left-wing revolutionaries, but quite good all the same (as can be expected by a film from Costa Gavras).

Capture.webp

The thing is, you keep seeing Yves Montand get crapped on in these films.

Oh well. The price you pay for good political thrillers.

The Last of the Mohicans.

A very exciting adventure, and I just love the cinematography and lush scenery
