What Was The Last Movie You Watched and Rate it!

GREEN BOOK

Overly politicized like it is a soviet propaganda move, contrived, lefty "Arent we so awesome" feel good movie that looks awesome on the screen. We even get some good music. I liked the minute and a half or what ever it was when they flipped the script and talked about class so as to modulate the White Shame a tad.

I can well imagine this winning Best Picture.

4/10

First Man.

I watched it yesterday finally and wasn't disappointed. I loved the idea of taking such a huge event and showing it through one man's eyes. I thought the detail in the movie was fascinating, you saw the sacrifices and the toll it took out of everyone involved. It was tense when it needed to be and visually it was stunning, I particularly loved the 5 min scene of them trying to land on the moon, I was on the edge of my seat even though of course we all knew the result.

9/10

Serenity - AWFUL

Before that - GLASS. Very disappointing.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7043012/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Velvet Buzzsaw- surprisingly good. It's kind of a horror comedy about the art world scene in LA which is full of snooty people who comes across a cursed set of paintings. Mot bad at all. 8/10

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5304996/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Standoff at Sparrow Creek- a small group of rightwing anti-gov militiamen begin to suspect that one of them massacred a bunch of cops at a funeral, so they go to their bunker and try to find out who did it before the police arrest them all. So-so, but it sort of peters out in the end. Very low key. 5.5/10

Good old classic western for me. The Stalking Moon with Gregory Peck.

and Texas Rangers.

Polar (2019) - IMDb
Polar- Mads Mikkelsen is an old assassin who plans one last job (boy, has this become a cliche) but his boss decides to kill him so he doesnt have to pay for his retirement. It's almost exactly like the John Wick movies, so if you're into this stuff, then by all means go watch it. There's a few good scenes, but its mostly predictable. 5/10

King of Thieves (2018) - IMDb
King of Thieves- Michael Caine stars in this British heist movie about a bunch of old men planning and executing a jewelry store robbery. OK, though it's a bit slow in parts. 5.5/10

A Private War (2018) - IMDb
A Private War- biographical movie about war reporter Marie Colvin. Good production values and acting, but the message is really heavy handed without actually explaining the nuances of why there is conflicts in the world. I thought it was way too political and tried to tug at one's heartstrings. Sends the wrong message, imo. 5.5/10

The Golem (2018) - IMDb
The Golem- historical horror movie about a Jewish village in 17th Century Lithuania that is threatened by neighbors blaming them for a plague, and of a woman who brings forth a mystical guardian that bears a resemblance to her dead son. Although the production values are good, its not really scary and something just feels off about it. Nice try though. 5/10

Brimstone (2016) - IMDb
Brimstone- very violent western about a mute wife and a very brutal reverend who comes into town seeking revenge. The story unfolds slowly and its not for the squeamish. Reminds me of the very violent spaghetti westerns that came out in Italy during the 60's, but it's even more nihilistic. Good acting though. 6.5/10

And two old, very political movies by Costa Gravas, the director of Z:

State of Siege (1972) - IMDb
State of Siege- in Ururguay in the early 70's, an American expat is kidnapped and killed by a communist terror group due to his ties in training the local police units to torture dissidents. It's based on a true story. 6/10

Amen. (2002) - IMDb
Amen.- another true story based on a German lieutenant in the SS who revolts after being assigned to spearhead the extermination of the Jews. He tries to tell the Catholic church about it but they dont do anything and instead help the Nazis escape after the war is lost. 6/10

Alita: Battle Angel 3D

I liked it. I wouldn't rank it among the best movies of all time, but it was good.

Same assessment for the 3D quality. It wasn't among the greatest 3D of all time, but it was good.

Alita. Battle Angel 8/10

Good entertainment and great CGI. Hope they make the second one.

Green Book

I can see why it won the academy award.
I don't want to say too much about it in case some plan on seeing it, but wow, it blew me away. It was basically about two guys, one white, and one black who trusted enough to let go of their stereotypes during a very racially explosive time in history, 1962.

Absolutely brilliant acting.
I give it a 10.

This is necessary, trust me.

As for me, I saw 21 Jump Street (8/10), really enjoyed it, easily the best comedy to come out so far this year.

The Nun. Kind of cliche. 6/10. Best movie seen recently is Platoon: 8/10

Saw the beginning of Smokey and The Bandit II the other day. Wow.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014) - IMDb

What We Do in the Shadows- a comedy mockumentary on a group of vampires in New Zealand. It starts off fine and is very original, but it loses steam by the end. thankfully its not that long. 7/10

At Eternity's Gate (2018) - IMDb

At Eternity's Gate- biopic of Vincent Van Gogh with Wilhelm Dafoe in the title role. Not bad, but drags on at times. 5.5/10

Sanctum (2011) - IMDb

Sanctum- a group of cave divers get stuck after the cave entrance gets flooded and have to find another way out. The acting was downright awful, and the plot is nonsensical too. I watched it for research purposes and the inaccuracies they were doing with regards to procedures was pretty useless. Waste of time. 2/10

Diplomatic Courier (1952)
Tyrone Power, Patricia Neal, Stephen McNally, Hildegard Knef
Diplomatic Courier (1952) - IMDb
Lively cold war drama that keeps viewer guessing until the end. Hildegard Knef was an under-appreciated treasure.
8/10

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton, Toni Collette, John Malkovich
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) - IMDb
Satire on modern art world with a supernatural angle. Stellar cast in top form. Funny and spooky. Zawe Ashton is hot!
8/10

Polar (2019)
Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick
Polar (2019) - IMDb
Tongue-in-cheek take-off on John Wick movies with graphic-novel ambiance.
8/10

The Oath (2018)
Ike Barinholtz, Tiffany Haddish, Nora Dunn
The Oath (2018) - IMDb
Political satire on divided America set at a family Thanksgiving dinner from Hell.
8/10

Fast and Loose (1939)
Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, Reginald Owen
Fast and Loose (1939) - IMDb
Great fun from Hollywood's anno mirabile! A husband and wife team solve a rare-books murder mystery.
9/10

Prospect (2018)
Sophie Thatcher, Jay Duplass, Pedro Pascal
Prospect (2018) - IMDb
Gritty old-school sci-fi "western" about prospecting on an alien moon. Wonderful performances by Thatcher and Pascal.
7/10

Niagara (1953)
Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Cotten, Jean Peters
Niagara (1953) - IMDb
Love, betrayal and murder at Niagara Falls in Technicolor. Directed by Henry Hathaway but very much in the style of Alfred Hitchcock.
7/10

Sixties Beefcake

Farewell, Friend (1968)
Alain Delon, Charles Bronson
Farewell, Friend (1968) - IMDb
A different kind of heist movie. Engaging and entertaining. With a very strange final moment.
7/10

Thunder Road (2018)
Jim Cummings
Thunder Road (2018) - IMDb
A cop loses his mother in the midst of a divorce and has a meltdown. Dark comedy.
7/10

The Final Wish (2018)
Lin Shaye, Michael Welch, Melissa Bolona
The Final Wish (2018) - IMDb
Typical contempo horror. A few jump scares and continuous eerie music. I wish I hadn't seen it -- that be my final wish.
1/10

Alita: Battle Angel was an epic surprise. Wonderfully done story and acting, on top of grade A CGI. Star Wars worthy. James Cameron as a Producer makes sense.

The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot (2018)
Sam Elliott, Aidan Turner, Ron Livingston
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot (2018) - IMDb
Campy title promises B-movie fare or else black comedy, but instead we get a melancholy meditation on regret, aging, love and duty. A film with lofty ambitions and modest results.
6/10
