What to make of this complicated time in our nation's history? Some thoughts from Doris Kearns Goodw

But where does Trump fit into that equation; equating the left to arsonists? If we had that kind of leadership through the Great Depression and WWII WEwouldn't be AmeriCANs.

He's the legitimately elected president. If you disagree, find a way to honestly sell your agenda and win an election. Falsehoods and violence are un-American.

Trump leads a Rebellion against incompetence of the elites and the tyranny of the elites mostly through the corrupt state, the rising of which is progress, because we were headed for a Hellish existence in chains.

Thanks to Trump we now have a fighting chance of staying free.
Blah blah blah a congenitally dishonest, corrupt billionaire from NYC who’s spent his entire life screwing over creditors, vendors, employees, and even gullible students really cares about all the bubbas in Flyover, USA.

#MAGA. Lol...again.

Lack of Fear and Hate, a whole lot of understanding without name calling.

The Leftists would have to totally change tactics, if that's the plan. Do you think that will ever happen? I don't.

You described how to get to the middle ground, but you haven't described what that middle ground looks like.

Yes, he AbsaByGodLutely is "the legitimately elected president", yet he IS the arsonist, not anyone on the right or the left.

I think he makes a valid point, but no that's not what I'm saying. I do think, even though America IS GREAT, if Trump continues dividing and not uniting AmeriCANs, you will really need those hats when he's finished.

Trump, a traitor to his class no less than FDR.

And with political skills of that league as well.

Something tells me no one will ever seriously compare Trump to FDR.

No one serious, at least.

For the record, I’m not especially interested in calls for civility at this time. And I don’t really bend over backwards to extend kindness to hardcore Trump supporters. But I try to do the bare minimum to keep the peace.

I don't care what you're interested in. I was responding to Stupedaso's post, using yours as an example.

We can't be waiting for the leaders … we are the citizen of this country.

-Doris Goodwin

We need to join together and take OUR Country back.

You typically need some kind if catalyst that takes the focus away from the divisive aspect of politics. Politicians of course could lead the way by working together more often, but the current environment would be bad for ratings and politicians have an eye one either staying in power or moving to the private sector to make more money. Unless something changes, it will either level off and stay at this level or folks double down on dumb and keep escalating. If DP were representative of this country, I'd say it's time to plan for things getting worse before they get better.

Interesting take...

At present … not in the White House.

There it is; we all knew that you could not resist the TDS craving...your entire OP is now a LAUGHABLE EXERCISE IN HYPOCRISY.

Well … no! When the president equates MORE than half of AmeriCANs to arsonists …

… that's not right! Is it????

She begins pointing out the crisis' our nation faced when Lincoln, T.R. Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson took office.

No matter if you are FAAAAAAR Right or EXTREEEEEEEM Left, now is the time for ALL AMERICANS to pull together. If we continue this trend of hateful, fearful infighting we WILL destroy each other, our Constitution and our Beloved Country! I don't care if you hate "lefties" or fear "righties", remember HATE and FEAR is how you are being controlled. STOP!!!

Greetings, StuPedaso. :2wave:

Very well said, and I agree! It's up to all of us to try showing respect for each other as fellow human beings who make mistakes from time to time - besides it would be very boring if we all agreed all the time like robots - and those who don't care enough to try will marginalize themselves without our help, and they will have no one else to blame.

I've read Doris Kearns Goodwin's books, and she's an excellent historian and author, IMO!

She really is an amazing voice for unity!! Especially now; so timely!

The people who hate President Trump carry their share of the blame.

There's plenty of blame to go around, but if you're going to be president one of the biggest challenges is taking a lot on the chin while trying to galvanize as many as you can. Trump didn't do that; he chose to stick on his side of the camp and troll opponents which just escalates things further and increases the divide. What's interesting now is the GOP is viewed the same way so how this plays out for the party over the long haul remains to be seen. Trump ascending to the presidency was a mix of frustration and dissatisfaction with the opposing candidate; if there's a candidate who can rally more of the independents and others on the fence, I don't think we'll see someone like Trump win again. The problem is that type of candidate isn't immediately obvious as of yet.

President Trump made it to the White House because the country rejected the Liberal agenda.

Most Americans don't want to live under Leftist rule.

Actually MOST Americans voted for HRC. MOST AmeriCANs want more equitable tax laws, more equitable health care, more equitable employment and wages, more equitable laws about outsourcing jobs. That's what MOST AmeriCANs want.

Nice effort, but we know how appealing to the " better angels of our nature " turned out.

It is my fervent hope it does not turn out that way, but I also think I am fooling myself.

All I can do as a loyal American is to treat all I meet with respect.
All I can do with those I meet online is to avoid the feces throwing and call out the hate from any side when i see it.
I did that just today with two threads from the right.

I also know there are some who do not want peace and calm, and strive to ensure the hate continues.
I know this because i made a POLL asking them.
The results are in my signature line.

Most Americans voted 1,000 Democrat politicians out of office. That's a solid sign that the country has rejected the Communist Liberal agenda.

You maybe right. BUT, "I" think you're wrong; we'll see … won't we.
