What is wrong with Quantum Mechanics?

I don't get my science info from conspiracy videos.

Sabine Hossenfelder is a leading, highly respected physicist. Hardly a conspiracy advocate. She succinctly points out the inability of physics to make much progress over the past four decades.

QM still wrestles with the same problems they wrestled with 40 years ago. Lots of new theories but no solutions. That is stagnation, not progress.

I bet most people who criticize QM like this probably can't even do basic calculus, lol.

Since she's made quantum gravity - or lack thereof - her chosen specialty I'm sure she sees it that way. Doesn't mean all of QM has stagnated - that's just narrow-mindedness on her part.

But, hey, you know she''s selling her book there with that video, right?? So it's more like an infomercial than anything else ...

No - QM still wrestles with **SOME OF** the same problems they wrestled with 40 years ago. But if you're going to defend that tactic (without my addition), then medicine has been stagnant for at least 140 years because they still can't prevent nor cure the common cold. :roll:


And when it gets to the point we think we know everything, I hope someone slaps us silly because it's going to be millennia (if ever!) before we even get close. At this point in our development we're like children on a beach who have just concluded that sand sparkles because it's happy the sun is out. :lol:

Finally, an accurate statement. We are just at the beginning of science. And QM is stuck. Since learning to split the atom, their single great achievement, progress has been difficult. Not that they aren't seeing anything new, but what they've seen hasn't answered any of the fundamental questions in over four decades, and they are at a loss to explain why not. Actually, what they've learned is the problems are even more complicated than they thought. IMO, the expectations were unreasonably high; they will be looking at "sparkling sand" for a lot longer than they thought. Or, to be more precise, the physicists themselves generally accept the fact that it will probably take many generations to make even a little more progress. It has been journalists hyping and exaggerating their stories to gain readers, and idiot laymen believing the hype. Real physicists are much more practical.

Calculus? Hell, I bet good money that even solving a series of polynomials would pose a challenge for most of them. And, if presented in the form of a sentence, it would be a near impossibility.

You must have a very narrow view of what the 'fundamental questions' are of you believe that. Sounds more like you're just parroting her and I've already explained why SHE is frustrated - because her chosen field hasn't come very far. (Though many would disagree because a lot of avenues have been explored, which is what science and progress is.)

What matters is that technologies derived from QM are currently allowing for lightspeed communications, as ignorant as the post may be notwithstanding.
