What did you have for dinner? -Part dois

Big plate each of caprese from the garden (minus the mozerella), several strips of bacon each, and we split a small grilled skirt steak.

we went to an almost extinct chain diner tonight. there was a dude there singing Elvis. he was pretty good.

salad bar
grilled cheese
70s crinkle fries w/ ketchup

Calamari
MR NY Strip sandwich w/ portobello mushrooms, arugula, bufala mozzarella and aioli
Crinkle cut fries

Was more breaded baked Empire Kosher chicken. Didn't bother with a side.

Steak and shake kid's grilled cheese and fries.

sesame Asian noodle bowl
vegetable egg roll w/ sauce

Technically this was lunch, but since Chile eats lunch very late I’ll post it

I’m visiting Chile right now and wandered down to this local restaurant about 5 blocks from my hotel in Ancud and had curanto

Basically a mess of steamed potatoes and shellfish with a sausage and bacon end added for flavor

We had grilled tri-tips, corn on the cob and yellow zucchini, with fresh herbs and Parmesan.

Yesterday evening we had medium sized cubes of steamed yellow summer squash, covered with lightly maple flavored shredded sweet onion also steamed, garnished with raw snap peas, julienned carrots, small cubes of Fontina cheese and cherry tomatoes. Fresh baked pumpernickel made with real blackstrap molasses, and pitchers of iced red tea also slightly flavored with maple. Lots of fresh room temperature watermelon for dessert.

garden corn on the cob w/ yogurt margarine
cheddar rice

Today’s dinner I went cheap, I arrived back in Santiago today for my last four days in Chile and wanted to get settled into my hotel, so I wandered to a tiny eatery across the street and got a Completo Italiano

Basically a foot long piled with tomatoes, smashed avacado (called palta in Chile), and mayonnaise. I only ate half, I don’t even want to know how many calories.

This is a common street food, wander to any restaurant in Chile and say quiero Un completo italiano they’re super cheap maybe equal to 1.50 to 2 US 80828240-5B4C-42BC-A044-E1AD668085B3.webp

Where do you find the round tubs; all we have is rectangular tubs here........

haven't seen the round tubs in a while. my current one is also rectangular. i just found a google image pic that would fit the attachment limitations.

The round tub was stout enough to see duty in the workshop; sawdust, nut & bolts and even solvents, if they weren’t too caustic. The rectangular ones are a might less useful.

this made me curious. i figured that it was a way to sell less product for the same price. i checked, and both are 15 ounces, though, so i was incorrect. given this, the rectangular package probably means that they can ship more units in the same sized box / carton.

Another almuerzo at 4 o clock, but no dinner tonight because this whole hake fish filled me up.

Basically a whole hake (minus head and guts of course) with fries (I largely didn’t eat the fries) washed down with a Pisco sour (Peruvian brandy and lime juice) this was at the Mercado Central in Santiago

grilled cheese with veggie chili.

Grilled lamb loin chops from our feel-good-meat-share program. Medium rare. Light spicing. Awesomeness.

Then, because of all the tomatoes we have (I'll post a pic in a bit), 5 cut up tomatoes w/ basil and cheddar (no fersh mozarella) and some great balsamic vinegar. Bit of oil. That was for me.

Steak and cheddar sand with pre-fab steak fries.

Yes I have the right bread.

Tonight we had fresh grilled red snapper (young blue fish, just beginning to run along the northern Atlantic coast), marinated in a load of garlic, fresh squeezed lime and orange juice, and lots of fresh ground black long pepper. Accompanied by shredded savoy cabbage with chunks of pitted fresh black cherries, shredded sweet onions, mint leaves, lemon juice and strips of fresh tamarind. Iced orange pekoe with more fresh mint leaves, and fresh homemade no sugar added peach and rum ice cream for dessert.

Reports of young tuna running nearby also. May go out on sport boat with my boys Saturday morning. Hoping for the best. It's early, but last year same time we brought in about 30 6-8 lb tuna during a 3 hour morning sale. Sweet eating.

Atlantic tuna have been running in extremely large schools since shark and seal presence is down, their natural predators. Some are saying tuna may soon reach sn historical high presence in the region. They also like dining on lion fish, which are unnaturally in abundance and invasive. A massive change since merely a decade ago. One of my cousins goes out almost daily off Montauk, says he's been seeing schools of Orca chasing tuna. He claims he hasn't seen that behavior for more than 30 years. Used to be a common sight when he was kid 50-60 years ago, this time of year.

Some people call young yellowfin tuna this size "jackfish." Off the British Isles in the North Sea, large Pike are also called Jackfish.

Cenar, at a Peruvian restaurant four blocks from my hotel in Santiago
A mountain of rice and chicken, plus a Pisco sour of course. The right meal to put me in a coma for bed, no I didn’t eat all of this, how can one person finish all of this?

Nonetheless really good, and I’m also sad because I’m going home Saturday and tommorow is my last full day in Santiago
