Link Wray, American guitarist. Shawnee Indian, initially learned guitar from a carny worker who went by the name of Hambone. Lost a lung to tuberculosis during his youth. An army brat who traveled from base to base, yet maintained a closeness with extended family. He was a perfectionist and explorer, experimented with tube amps of his day and destroying them and speakers all too often. Even among those he influenced, either 1st, 2nd or 3rd hand, there are many guitarists who don't know his name, but they still owe him for where he brought the electric guitar, "where no man had tread before." Yet, with an acoustic guitar, doing a piece like Malagueña, he could leave the audience in tears.

He played Dan Electro guitars because they were affordable, sometimes other brands, including Gibson SG's, but he made those Dan Electr's growl. Check out his rare double horn Dan Electro in some of the following videos. Sold by the Sears Catalog, or JC Penny, cheap. I own one, never could make it sound like Link Wray made it sound.

As far as I know, the only instrumental banned from the radio airwaves :):
