One of the interesting things about Chuck Berry, her rarely traveled with a band. He used local sidemen wherever he traveled, arranged by his manager. Didn't rehearse with them other than a sound check. Sometimes he would be surprised by how good they were. He did a show in Portchester NY in early 1975, among the sidemen that night were Al Kooper, Jim Fielder (from the Mothers of Invention, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Buffalo Springfield), and Dewey Martin (the original drummer from Buffalo Springfield). He had no idea who they were. The next night, Jaco Pastorous took Jim Fielder's bass playing. He knew nothing of Pastorous either. Another night at the Bitter End, Mike Bloomfield and Alan Wilson (from Canned Heat) were on stage with him. He knew neither. After the show Mike took him to McSorley's to get drunk, and they started a lifelong friendship.
