We Need To Speak Honestly About The GOP's Evolution Into A Conspiracy Cult

You don't seem to understand the purpose of the Republican Party. It is a political instrument for the plutocratic corpotocracy to control the country's political system, using its voters as deluded pawns to take that power, nothing more. Romanticized talk of 'conservative principles' has essentially nothing to do with its purpose, only its con. It's like how they say "the great state of" in front of every state. Empty words.

in some ways that is correct... unfortunately, the Democrat party's purpose is to make the constitution meaningless and allow the globalist china pandering lobby to take control and keep it, which at this point is a ton worse than the conservative lobbys.

conservative principles are espoused by the people who believe in them , not the politicians, although some conservative politicians do try, which is good.

It's a nice change you can admit some of the disaster of the right. Your attack on the party whose name you can't spell correctly is absurd, however.

The Democratic Party's (I'll repeat the name for you, this is educational, the Democratic Party's) policies on the constitution are the ones defending it. The ONLY attack I see even worth noting by the right is on gun control, and it's a specious, ignorant attack. The Democrats aren't the ones destroying the constitution to make it protect money owning our political system and hundreds of other of false rulings.

I won't even get into your China attack, in which you clearly are not prepared to understand either China policy nor the actual harm of the right-wing plutocrat corporatocracy.

conservative principles are espoused by the people who believe in them , not the politicians, although some conservative politicians do try, which is good.

That's like saying the Scientology cult espouses its own views, they're not told by the cult leadership. The Republican voter is incredibly manipulated and misled, where at best they are pandered to to get their vote which is then used for the plutocracy agenda by the monied interests who are given that vote.

Much closer to how it ACTUALLY works is that expert investigators find the arguments on which those voters are vulnerable to manipulation - let's say, they don't like illegal immigrants - and then highly manipulative campaigns are launched to convince them that they have to vote Republican if they don't want Democrats handing over the country to illegal immigrants.

It's done in a completely disingenuous, dishonest, manipulative manner by people who don't care whatsoever about the issue usually, but who are simply paid to 'get votes' on any issue they can, for the sole purpose of those votes going to hired hands who have only one real agenda, concentrating wealth and power in the hands of a few. Those voters are suckers.

One of the challenges in analyzing modern American politics is accurately describing the Republican Party without seeming unserious and hyperbolic. Unfortunately, the modern Republican Party’s abdication of seriousness, good faith and reality-based communications or policy-making has stretched even the most open-minded analyst’s capacity for forced balance. But there comes a tipping point at which it becomes too dangerous to keep up the pretense. Most people left of center would argue (rightly, I believe) that we hit that point long, long ago and the time to re-evaluate journalistic norms and practices should have been decades earlier when the GOP was busy covering up the Iran Contra scandal and promoting the Laffer Curve as serious public policy.

We Need to Speak Honestly About the GOP’s Evolution Into a Conspiracy Cult | Washington Monthly

We have spent the last three to four years (almost) on a conspiracy theory that had Trump working with the Russians to fix the 2016 election.
It wasn't a fringe theory-- we actually had investigations and the like into it.
So this author needs to get a little perspective.

The Republican Party began its decent with the political polarization and partisanship of Newt Gingrich.

Suffered mortal wounds with the Tea Party and its abandonment of being the party of 'rule of law' and 'family values'.

The metamorphosis is now permanent with the Party of Trump.

A corporatocracy government that has no qualms about ceding all meaningful power to a Barr-type unitary executive without constraint or oversight.

Yes we know-- the Republican Party began its descent when it began to win.
Please forgive me if I find that interpretation somewhat biased.

I guess the author of the article missed another conspiracy...

Your OP sucks moldy balls.

But, the headline is true.

We need to accept the fact that some Trump supporters are dangerously disconnected to reality in regard to Trump and Trumpco.
It's more than differences of opinion, it's differences of fact.
Some of these Trump supporters live by their alternate facts.
These people are not reachable in conventional ways.

Only vicious partisan idiots would describe the Republican Party as a cult of any kind. It doesn't take believing in a conspiracy to believe that there have been a lot of people in government jobs that do not believe Donald Trump should be president and have not hesitated to use their position and connections to attempt to undermine him.

This is one of my biggest problems with the mainstream media -- they have carried water for Trump for far too long.

The media has tried way too hard to be "fair" to Trump, holding this deranged idiot ****tard to a ridiculously low bar.

Trump will start a nuclear war with North Korea
Trump will start a war with Iran
We have video of Russian hookers peeing on Trump
We have Trumps tax returns

Trump will get rid of Meals on Wheels
Trump laundered Russian money through real estate deals
The Russians laundered money through the NRA for the Trump campaign

Reporting the truth is the media's job, which explains most of the stuff that you listed.

What the media shouldn't do is ignore Trump's idiocy and lies and his inarticulate, unintelligible dumb **** 5th grade manner of speaking. But the media never talks about how stupid Trump is, even though it's obvious. They always try to normalize this stupid mother ****er and carry water for him.

Laughable.

You obviously aren't embarrassed when you hear Trump talk. I sure am. He talks on a 5th grade level 95% of the time. He is simply a stupid ****ing human being who isn't qualified to be mayor of Bumble****, MS, let alone President.

Honestly, I don't know how you all support the guy. It must be the racism, nastiness, and hatred that you all like about him.

We were talking about the media. Remember? if you can't support your own argument and have to jump to TDS stuff, you shouldn't have made the argument in the first place.

Touchy subject for you, I understand. It's difficult for you to rationalize voting for a racist and a bully who speaks on a 5th grade level. Maybe you're even embarrassed by him like I am.

If you need more space to tell everyone how Trumpy hurt your feelings again, go right ahead. Its been your default go to line since you've been on DP. No reason to change now.

I think what you're seeing is a huge influx of poor whites into the republican party. Poor whites used to be democrats.

Poor whites are very susceptible to conspiracies because of their lack of education.

why does the ethnic group with the lowest level of education support the Democrats so strongly?

Touchy subject, I get it. Poor baby can't explain why he votes for a stupid ****ing 5th grader, who ridicules his opponent for wearing a mask during a ****ing pandemic. Masks that his own CDC recommends that everyone wears. What a stupid **** Trump is.

You can ride the Trump clown car off the cliff in November. And you will.

The conspiracy theory problem with the Republican Party started with Fox News in the mid 90’s by mainstreaming conspiracy theory culture. The result is that a conspiracy theory has to be outrageously unbelievable to avoid being adopted by Republicans in general, Pizzagate being the easiest example. Otherwise, Fox News picks up and disseminates pretty much all CT either as fact or heavily implies they have validity.

I think what you're seeing is a huge influx of poor whites into the republican party. Poor whites used to be democrats.

Poor whites are very susceptible to conspiracies because of their lack of education.

Lack of education and usual religious affiliation.

They need to change the name of their Party, problem solved. Leave the Republican Party to actual Conservatives.

With an eighty plus percent approval among republicans, there doesn't seem to be many conservatives left in the gop. I also still want to know, what do conservatives, conserve? Oh right, pushing money from the bottom to the top.

Trump supporters are the minority, they just scream the loudest. I'm positive even some trump first time voters won't give him a second vote. Trump is nothing more than the showman for what the republican party really is, out for themselves, liars cheats and thieves and most concerned with money, paying as few taxes as possible and building a wall to keep the 'undesirables' out of white america. Making abortion illegal and guns more accessible. Trump's supporters love him because they too feel like victims. They are losing the vision of their perfect america so when trump plays the victim card which he does on a daily basis it only feeds the troops anger about they too are victims of progress.

Who could have imagined the gop bashing every institution in america, judges, public servants, ambassadors and even members of their own party if they speak out? The powers that be loved the tea party because they bashed obama on a daily basis, but the monster they let live has now grown up and doesn't listen to it's parents any longer and is on a tear of destruction in america, and the base of the gop cheers it on. Sad.

You realize yours is a conspiracy theory, swing_voter? I guess the dem party which hates Trump is the king of conspirators against Trump...Russian collusion with the Trump campaign over the 2016 election. The Russian influence of the US election of 2016 is, itself, a conspiracy theory. The phone call with Zelensky. Need I go on? Me thinks the wrong party was correctly labeled the conspiracy party.

Benghazi! Pizza Gate! Deep State! Deep State! Deep State!

Benghazi! Pizza Gate! Deep State! Deep State! Deep State!

Benghazi! Pizza Gate! Deep State! Deep State! Deep State!

There. You can have it. Now the Cult has its own cheer...

That's the thing though,isn't it?
Education doesn't protect you from believing wacky things — at best it just changes which wacky things you're susceptible to believing.

Ignorance and stupidity do make people generally susceptible to wider variety of cons and "mis-beliefs".
But knowledge and being smart aren't protection from cons and "mis-beliefs".

Intentionally spread mis-beliefs, like what politicians, advertisers, and other con-men do
often use things we want to be true or things which we already assume to be true (but aren't) to get us on board.

Humans make many choices about things like politics and religion based on how those choices reward us in out immediate social settings rather than as the result of some chain of logical reasoning about he politics of religion.

Ill-informed and non-rational actors are the Achilles heel of democracies and free markets
