Your thoughts on why our voter turnout is so pathetic.

People are content with the way things are. Some of them would rather play video games than vote.

1) People are jaded towards politics. They do not trust a single politician, so why does it matter?
2) People's universes end at their fingertips now (their cell phones). Narcissism breeds apathy. They just don't care.

Secure elections first and take money out of politics - then you have reason to vote. Moscow Mitch is ruining US election system. Why he's still in that spot as part of GOP? I'm pretty sure if something like that happens here it would be really fast resignation and some prison time. Mitch is messing with wrong people, but somehow it's perfectly fine in US - I don't get it.

Simple

Most people are selfish and apathetic. As long as they have a pocketbook everything is okay.

Then, there are those who would vote if they felt it would make a difference. It doesn't

To sum it up, our citizenry sucks. We need citizenry reform

Over all, a disconnect between politicians and voters. Politics has become increasingly national, even international, largely due to widening media sources. In the past you’d read about local issues in a local newspaper. Now you go online and see more about foreign politicians that your local representatives. National politics is also more negative and focuses on extremes when in reality, there will be a whole load of elected officials quietly getting on with their roles, reasonably or even exceptionally, without getting any credit.

Somewhat related, in many places there has been increasing centralisation of government, shifting power from local and regional officials to national and international politicians.

In think there is an increasing professionalism in politics, with political office being ever more a step on a particular career path rather than a vocation to serve country and people. It’s always been this way to a certain extent but I think we’re also more aware of the fact and therefore more dismissive of politicians when they say (honestly or not) that they really want to do the right thing by voters. Again, something with a bigger focus at the national and international level.

Rightly or wrongly, the whole process and mechanics of elections hasn’t progressed, with issues introducing technology and making the whole system fit with the modern lives of most people. In addition to practical limitations, this can create the image of voting being old-fashioned and uncool, something our parents and grandparents do, not us.

We’re also reaching the point where the current generation of parents are disengaged with the political system so their children will be even more so. There could also be an element of a lack of socio-political education in schools, one of the many things that seems to have been pushed out as other priorities are promoted.

Because in a lot of ways, voting is pointless. The electoral college is part of the problem. If you live in a a winner-take-all state that isn't one of the handful of swing states, your vote doesn't really matter that much. It's a 99.9% certainty which party will win and one vote, for either side, won't have much impact. And beyond that voting really doesn't matter all that much. Despite the deep political divides in the country, the Republicans and Democrats really aren't all that different. Nothing changes all that much depending on which party is in power.

Many people understand that voting is mostly an illusion? That voting does not really determine who controls the government?

You say it doesn't make a difference if people vote and then say the citizenry sucks. Maybe it's our political system that sucks? Why vote when the popular winner, loses?

It is the lobbyists who run this country. Just look at what Trump said to the reporters on the day he left for Dayton and El Paso. He action mentions the lobbyist group NRA.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Friday he could persuade the powerful National Rifle Association lobby group to drop its strong opposition to gun restrictions after recent mass shootings that have reignited the gun control debate.

Why would a president even mention a lobby group in that press meeting? Why not the Fraternal Order of Police's view or the National Center for Victims of Crime?
He makes it sound as if the NRA is a block of senators? Perhaps because that lobby group is given that same level of importance as a group of senators.

So again who runs this country?

There's gotta be some way to tie this into racism or Trump.

Hey guy... you don't want those who don't vote voting

Have you been to a social security office and seen the freak show?

Yep, here is a great example of that

Special interests run this country, as Ike alluded to in 1961.

We have a fascist oligarchy. The government is bought and sold by special interests.
