Imports of US orange juice have fallen to a 20 year low. Year on year imports declined by more than half to $5.78 million, compared to nearly $12 million in June 2024.

Canada is seeing a "dramatic reduction" in imports of orange juice from Florida but that is to be expected, given the rising prices and the fact that the beverage was specifically targeted by our counter-tariffs, said Michael von Massow, a professor of food agriculture and resource economics at the University of Guelph in Ontario.

In other words, the marked drop in imports has been compounded by the ongoing consumer desire to buy Canadian, he said.

Florida orange growers were already reeling from a combination of factors, and tariffs certainly don't help.
Something the economically illiterate POTUS doesn't understand is that the success of large American corporations is related to the fact that they are multinational in nature.

He's throttling their revenue and growth prospects and increasing their production costs so that even domestic income is impacted.

He's opening up wars on multiple fronts. It would be one thing if tariffs were focused on specific countries for specific ends in mind. The assumption he's making is that since the US is the world's largest consumer, all countries will be forced to bend the knee. The flaw with that assumption is that built into that assumption is a core assumption that economics has primacy over all other values, that economics is the only consideration a nation-state makes and that our being the world's largest consumer gives us total leverage. The administration and their supporters make the case that we could really inflict a lot of injury if we want to, which is true, but that goes both ways, as we're just now beginning to see.

Cynically, this is why I think the US will only lurch harder in the direction of authoritarianism, because this administration knows there may be political consequences for their policies and they are determined to avoid paying them.

Mrs Gump would have something to say about Trump’s tariff policy.

I presume we all know what it would be and I don’t have to quote it.

Trump's disadvantage is that he's not the smartest person in the global room.

If you look at the education and experience of leaders in Canada, Australia, the EU, Mexico and others you'll see that many of them are actual economists with a fair sprinkling of PhDs in their ranks.

Publicly they'll play nice but at the negotiating table they're tough as nails which is why he doesn't have the 200 deals he claimed in April or the '90 deals in 90 days' he later claimed.

If I were a Canadian leader or adviser, I would be making the case for hedging risk and decoupling from the US as much as possible. Canada and Mexico are always going to be the most exposed to whatever happens to their big neighbor, but they can and should minimize the damage. I would even go so far as to say they should both have an open mind when dealing with pariahs like China and Russia.

In terms of trade China isn't a pariah to Canada or most western countries. We enthusiastically take advantage of both their large market and manufacturing capabilities.

As for Russia Canada strongly supports sanctions. They are in fact a pariah.

Trump can "open" counties to American imports all he wants but that is worthless if the corporations and consumers on the other end won't buy the American products. It's like opening the EU up to American beef at those prices do you think Europeans will buy that instead of the beef they get from Ireland, Scotland and elsewhere? Never mind the antibiotics and hormones used in American beef!!!!

I haven't bought American OJ in months.

I haven't bought American anything since this whole thing started. It's easy as supermarkets are now clearly identifying Canadian products.

The only personal sacrifice I've had to make has been to give up my favorite California wine.

Mine was JIF peanut butter. Dr. advised the benefits of more of the “good” cholesterol found in peanut butter. While wintering in Florida we both became addicted to JIF. Oh, the pain of major sacrifice!

Shopping has taken on a new set of parameters with us being quite surprised by the new competitiveness springing up and evidenced by our finding fresh fruits and veggies arriving in smaller retailers from all parts of the globe being offered at lower prices than the major stores.

We have a multitude of choices locally with major outlets like Zehr’s, Freshco, Costco, No Frills, etc., being often outgunned by the smaller outfits like Giant Tiger on some of the staple items and even more exotic items like Kiwi fruit or Blueberries etc.

Eliminating the U.S. entirely out of the grocery cart has proven to be far easier than anticipated. Canada has adapted and pivoted remarkably in the circumstances.

Wait til you see Florida's tourism numbers.

They're ****ed. They are in a spiral that hasn't just hurt the tourism and property markets, but also caused a shitstorm of misapplied capital investments in a wide variety of industries.

I hear Portugal is actively recruiting snowbirds.

French wines are better...

We have lots of options for winter vacations. Every major Canadian city has inexpensive direct flights to the Caribbean and Mexico.

The resorts down there are beautiful and the people very friendly and welcoming.

The vibe in Florida right now is that we should stay away.

While watching the various American news interviews with Florida tourism agents; it becomes very clear they’re hurting BIGGLY. Nearly every one of those idiots seems totally confused over the reasons for their collapse and even go so far as to openly assume an arrogant stance with suggesting everyone return and bring money with them.

Cripesahmighty, they’re dumber than a bag of hammers. Their country has become toxic to the entire world’s tourism, not just Canadians.

Well, yeah. And even if they weren't pricks, you'll wind up getting deported to Uganda or South Sudan over a visa irregularity.

By now, anyone who unnecessarily comes to the United States deserves what happens to them.

Isn't it hilarious?

Only anecdotal but two of the three couples we routinely golf and associate with in FL plus ourselves have cancelled plans to go to FL this winter. When I called the club to cancel our membership they told me that they were getting numerous calls doing the same.....and all for basically the same reason......and it ain't the weather. I read a report that car travel returning from the US is down over 30% .That is a lot of tourism and shopping dollars lost.

The damage done to the Florida housing market with loss of equity to owners due to the Real Estate market being flooded by Canadian sales was being widely discussed by American friends.

Some of them were bemoaning the experience of that old 2008 happenstance of suddenly being “upside down” on their mortgage. A couple of them had moved down from NY and bought Townhouse condos using part of the equity of the sale of their NY homes, banking the remainder to use as “entertainment” such as costly golf memberships only to now find they owe more on the part mortgage than what their Townhome is now worth.

Their vociferous castigating of Trump ends abruptly when asked if they bothered to vote. The ensuing silence over the phone speaks volumes. Too bad, so sad.

Florida isn't anecdotal. They're ****ed.
