U.S. Considers Broad Curbs on Chinese Imports, Takeovers

I wish I could stop saying this, but alas debate boards won't let me: A post that starts with "So" is almost universally guaranteed to be a post that attempts to put a strawman into the other person's mouth for purposes of pidgeonholing him/her into a position they didn't take, so as to set up a dishonest criticism.

We can hurt China. China can hurt us. It will be very bad both ways if we get into a trade war.

Make sure you know what you're asking for and what it will cost. Make sure you understand it very well before trumpeting some half-cocked...no...uncocked policy that Trump crapped out after getting made at something he heard from his advisers on Fox and Friends.

I wish it was allowable to respond to a "So...." strawman post with a F.O.A. - - you know what.

What?

We've got tenses, grammar, syntax, and more.

There are many things wrong with what you have said. Allow me to focus on that last bit.

If American policy makes Americans pay more for things (to 'restore America to prosperity' or whatever) but also everyone else pays less, then everyone else is always paying less for the same things. Trouble is, the feedback loop you are relying on does not exist. If we keep adding tariffs, we get more retaliation. Even if we don't hurt quite as much as an opponent, we still hurt very badly. And if we take the entire world on, we will hurt horribly indeed.

I suppose I should just give up. If people are supporting Trump's trade war idea, we're just about cooked anyway

It's the same political philosophy they use all the time. If it makes liberals cry trumpettes will shoot their own faces off and call it a victory.

I didn't say "only the left." Can't you read? lol

If your comment wasn't so dumb, it would be dumber.

Careful, you're going to start sounding like Slick Willie arguing over what "is" really means, and I know you ain't got no love for Bubba Clinton.
We ALL read your post, so just own it fer chrissakes, you were trying to imply that Wally World was a liberal paradise.

Good start would be getting the kooker left to stop trying to get something for nothing by shopping at WalMart. Cheap bastards.

Your focus was solely on the left. You trying to deny that is just you lying again like usual.

Americans will walk over their dying grandmother to save a dime. They will squeeze a quarter until the eagle ****s. And having said that, nearly everyone in flyover country, and rural California shops at Walmart some of the time. Why? To save a dollar that’s why. They are the middle class left and the middle class right. They are the ones people only care about at election time.

BTW, It is not R2D2 buying all that Chinese ****. It is us.

The "kooker left" (crazy left?) brand-shames Walmart.

Good grief, you guys are just spinning off into economic la la land right now. Condolences to those that get that....wow...

EDIT: On the plus side, I've got my investments all in Canada at the moment, and we're going to start looking a hell of a lot better. If our guys are smart, they'll goad Trump into blowing this NAFTA thing, and then we'll be a lovely market to pick up the business your weird isolationism is creating a vacuum in.

It's about time we got serious. We've finally started to put the brakes on a serial burglar after he robbed 1500 homes. Late is better than never.

We have to push back against the Chinese before it's too late. I don't know who's going to fight him tooth and tong, but I suspect the TDS crew will have issues with this. Democrats? They's been pretty quiet lately.

Lets see now. Trump has some 39 trademarks in China, 36 of which were given to him after he was elected. Ivanka has three. Neither of them have shown any interest in moving back to the States. The major producer of Fentanyl is China, and you can get it mailed to your doorstep, and Trump has done nothing bout that. Then too, Trump buys his steel from China for his construction projects.

And you think Trump is going to do something about what?

IMO, the wrong group of people are being called "Dreamers".

Typical response from the right wing mindless. Set things up so the majority of the people get nothing from the growth of wealth, and then whine when they shop where they can afford to shop.

I don't know...
Considering he can easily be short-circuited, it's obvious he's got some cheap Chinese parts inside him.

Let's see if you can grasp this analogy. If you have a piece of garden hose, and I have a base ball bat and we threaten to hit each other, you are going to back down because while it is true that it hurts to get hit with a piece of hose, a baseball bat will send you to the ER or possibly to a pine box.

When you have a massive trade deficit, you are holding the baseball bat. A trade war may cause financial hardship in the US, but it would cause revolution and regime change in China and the EU. The US is holding the baseball bat and the rest of the world knows it. They may throw tantrums and talk tough, but when it comes down to it, they will give in and do what is in their own interests, which is to renegotiate the trade deals to make them more fair.

The one thing Trump understands that no one gives him credit for is how to negotiate from a position of strength.

What is hard to understand is why Americans would not want more fair trade deals and more prosperity for America. Perhaps they really don't want the best for America......

Strange.

When economists write papers about trade policies, they tend to have all sorts of evidence, arguments, and equations. But you just know that it's very simple and all we have to do is announce that our **** is bigger?

:thinking

That's not how the treasuries work.

China can't magically call in all the debt overnight. The treasuries pay off under the conditions on which they were sold.

Do your homework next time buddy.

That being said, I can agree with the notion that imposing tariffs with trading partners is foolish.

So their tariffs are fine, but ours are foolish..... Yes that make perfect sense....

It is amazing no matter how simple a concept is, some people are just not mentally capable of understanding it....

So you don't support punishing China for stealing our intellectual property and other industrial espionage (most of which occurs in our Defense industry)?

Sure, right after we start punish the Russians, we can assume that will cranking up any minute now, right........in the mean time let's get into Trade Wars with our major trading partners..........Putin is Laughing his arse off.

This isn't about me. This is about your post, which implied that trade policy is a simplistic game of people with bigger clout bullying people with lesser clout to get what they want.

The modern world is complex and interwoven. It has taken decades of post-WWII maneuvering to get to this place (see some of Cardinal's posts, plus, economics texts). We blow this up now, abruptly, and we hurt ourselves. Why punch allies in the nose if they can do it right back, to our mutual detriment?

Economic policy isn't about emotion, or at least, shouldn't be.

I'm sure if the trade war causes the **** to hit the fan your Con media masters will have a list of Dems you can memorize and blame for the upcoming crash.

You obviously have not done your homework on this one. We are not proposing tariffs on trade partners who are trading fairly, we are proposing tariffs on countries who are imposing tariffs and unfair trade policy's on us. What part of that do you not understand?

Homework, really??! This whole matter was an off the cuff remark that had to have a reporter ask (as they were being escorted from the room) "what are the numbers?" 25 &10 sounds good, no prepared remarks, no advance warning to anyone and now the fallout begins. What a way to run economic policy!

You really do not have a clue what you are talking about.

The part where you are lying for no obvious reason.

Trump said he wants no exemptions. WaPo said there might be for Mexico and Canada, but that's (1) "Might", (2) leaves the rest very stupid.

What are you talking about?

For those of you who are ignorant in the art of negotiating, all negotiations start from a more extreme position and gravitate to a more moderate one. My god it is like I am talking to a bunch of grade school children.....

Well there is already a growing list of our trading partners that have stated that they will impose tariffs on US products if ours get implement, so I guess they are also negotiating. Thing is this tactic might work in the business world where you have the upper hand, this is not the business world and we do not have that strong a hand, not to mention the fact we depend on many imports that we cannot even produce ourselves and the jump in prices and layoffs from US companies. Oh and the Republicans are against this, and in the end they may have to act if things go too far and it looks like the US economy is about to implode. I would imagine that gross incompetence is all the grounds they may need.
