From NBC News:

WASHINGTON — More than a half-century after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he intends to release never-before-seen government files related to the investigation into Kennedy's killing.
"Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened," Trump tweeted.

There appear to be some security concerns even now. Potentially exciting news, though.

I hope the release happens. The public absolutely deserves to know all that the
government has known for years. JFK's assassination left a terrible stain on us and the start of
people not believing our government or institutions.

Have to say I'm curious.

And I bet Trump does it...just to go down in history as "the president who released the JFK files." LOL, as if it's an accomplishment of some kind.

IMO he'd do it whether or not it was a good idea, security-wise. But he left himself some wiggle room...he still doesnt have to release all of them.

There goes Ted Cruz's political aspirations.

Great news. I'd love it if Trump took an even bolder step and released the bulk of classified information about 9/11.

Good. What was the declassification date on the information to begin with?

Cool. Trump has only made 1318 false and misleading statements since being inaugurated. I certainly see no reason not to take him at his word now.

If there was truly anything that the government is afraid to release, it has most likely long since been destroyed.

Pardon my skepticism, but if there is a release, I expect one that is heavily redacted.

That number seems way too low.

First, the last update was October 9. Also, I'm sure that a lot of other public statements are falling through the cracks. When the person making public statements is the President of the United States, one can only analyze so many: it takes seconds to tell a single lie, and much more time to analyze and refute each one.

I bet it's redacted to hell-n-gone by the time we see it.

It kind of makes you wonder what he's going to do during the feeding frenzy. Nuke NK, hoping nobody notices?

They were already scheduled to be released; it's not got anything to do with Trump 'allowing' them to be released and everything to do with him try to take credit for it. They are legally required to be released by the 26th of this month.

Greetings, apdst. :2wave:

2123? 160 years after he was assassinated? What on earth? :wow:

Anyone who mattered, along with their children and grandchildren would have died by then.

Indeed, the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act was passed in 1992.

The Act requires that each assassination record be publicly disclosed in full and be made available in the collection no later than the date that is 25 years after the date of enactment of the Act (which will be October 26, 2017), unless the President of the United States certifies that: (1) continued postponement is made necessary by an identifiable harm to the military defense, intelligence operations, law enforcement, or conduct of foreign relations; and (2) the identifiable harm is of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in disclosure.

OH MY GOD, TRUMP IS FULL OF ****, WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THAT COMING.

.....

Congress mandated in 1992 that all assassination documents be released within 25 years, but Mr. Trump has the power to block them on the grounds that making them public would harm intelligence or military operations, law enforcement or foreign relations.

You went off half-cocked. Who didn't see that coming. ;)

And what was his tweet?

"Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened.
7:35 AM - Oct 21, 2017"

Exactly, and he's tweeting this as if it's his own idea.
