the only solution for afghanistan is to get the tallaban in pakistan killed. The situation as it currently exists is similar to vietnam when N. Vietnam was a place we largely couldnt go. staying in afghanistan means we will be there a long time. We also need to do something about russias involvement supporting the tallaban.

My argument back when we "encouraged" Saddam to go into Kuwait so we could attack him, I proffered that it would be like Viet Nam in that there we were fighting an enemy in their jungles where they are hidden among the citizens...same same in Iraq...just in the cities and deserts...how many years later? We still in the thick of it?

Poppy started it, Junior escalated back into Iraq to show up the old man, Obama couldn't put the toothpaste back into the tube and Trump...oh lordy...welcome to WWIII

I am not a military type by any stretch. It should have been clear after 9/11 that a massive land Army in either Afghanistan or Iraq was just not smart. Arab culture and Middle Eastern culture is about as far from anything resembling democracy or resembling a country as things can possibly get. Our answered to 911 should have involved things like the CIA, Special Forces, cruise missiles, drones, Keyhole. and that sort of thing.

Likewise, we could have dealt with Saddam (even before he went into Kuwait if we really wanted to stop him) and I would argue that 9/11 would likely not have happened.

It is impractical make a plan to kill all the taliban in Pakistan. Let them have Afghanistan. We can hit the training areas with bunker busters at a much lower cost in money and lives compared to staying there.

I agree you're never going to kill all of the medieval fundamentalists in the Middle East. What you do have to do is deny them A Safe Haven

I am only speaking as an average opinionated middle aged woman, so allow me this guess. Trump is trying to keep the promises he made. His ego is too huge not to try his best. He is realizing that he has to deal with die hard political insiders who are used to their secret backroom dealings and won't let an outsider rattle their comfortable cages.
By political insiders I am speaking of career politicians from both sides. They are well versed in side show grandstanding for the average consumption, but are getting along just fine behind the curtain.
They are deathly afraid of anyone destroying their game.

I think that Trump is allowing himself to be tamed by the Swamp, but more than that since most of the Elite are on strike till he is removed Trump finds himself with a forced reliance on Generals to get the day to day work done. As reward for not abandoning this country like the rest the military will get most of their requests approved.

It's kinda ironic in that his anti-war stance was one of the few things I come closest to agreeing with him on but then we would have been much better off had Poppy Bush not set up Saddam through April Glaspie and got us into the "Mother Of All Wars"...at any rate, knowing he's a compulsive liar, I didn't take much stock in what he said and now he's delegated it to the status quo.

Key is to do it and not come off as a Crusader which is the mess we've gotten ourselves into...it's very hard to win friends and influence enemies when we've been known to blast the crap out of the civilizations infrastructure with depleted uranium...you can't beat people up and have them say I love you...especially when family members who weren't killed are dying of cancer.

Best defense against a suicide bomber...give them a reason to live...just sayin'

I was struck by a recent interview of a converted white supremacist where he made a number of points...I should try and find the interview and start a thread around it, I digress...he got into the fighting mind aspect and his conversion because black's and Jews in his work place treated him with compassion regardless...someone gave a damn.

Then again we've got the Marines so we can just kill them all and let God sort them out.

You don't agree we go after those who attack us?

Granted we don't encourage their methods, we've got Shock and Awe...but we've got some radicals too who are barely a step up in the food chain.

The radicals of a society are outcasts from the norm and the best we can do is minimize their impact...hard to do when we provide the subject matter for their recruitment posters.

I guess when you say they don't think like us the "they" and the "us" would have to be narrowed down...the battle we are in is of a war that has been going on since before the time of Christ...the Brits jumped into it early in the last century and failed...then the Russians jumped into it and failed...our turn in the barrel.

We don't need them to think like us...we need them to think like the better members of their society.

The people who believe Obama is the best president ever are about as naive and ignorant as the people who believe him to be the worst President ever. You may not have agreed with everything Obama did, but to say he did nothing in eight years is ridiculous. Our countries economy literally COLLAPSED in 2008 and here we are 8 years later and we have an economy that is booming...Not because of Trump, the boom we're seeing now was set in motion years ago. With a congress which sole purpose was to oppose anything Obama...Trump has congress in his hand and he is failing because he doesn't know how to govern...He has no clue how to be a politician. I just hope in October when Trump can finally sets a budget plan he doesn't fck everything up....However, his version of trickle down is not very promising.
