Trump orders withdrawal of U.S. forces from northern Syria, days after Pentagon downplays possibility

Trump ordered a withdrawal of the about 1,000 U.S. troops left in northern Syria late Saturday. The president made the decision after indications that Turkey intends to expand its attack “farther south than originally planned and to the west, Esper said, speaking on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.

You heard right. More details about it here.

U.S. troops to withdraw from northern Syria as ISIS supporters escape amid alleged Turkish atrocities

U.S. troops were preparing to withdraw from northern Syria Sunday as Turkish forces continued their advance.

The situation on the ground was deteriorating rapidly, a U.S. official with direct knowledge told NBC News.

Hundreds of Islamic State group supporters escaped from a displacement camp in the area and there were reports of alleged atrocities amid growing international alarm.

U.S. forces were at risk of being isolated and there was increased risk of confrontation between Turkish forces and U.S. troops, said the official, who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

President Donald Trump made the decision to withdraw Saturday night, the official said.

About 1,000 troops will leave the area "as safely and quickly as possible," Defense Secretary Mark Esper told CBS' "Face the Nation" in an interview Sunday.

They will not leave the country entirely, he said.

Esper said that the conflict between Turkish forces and U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish fighters had become "untenable" for the U.S. military.

Trump has largely stood by his decision to pull U.S. troops back to clear the way for Turkish forces, despite growing chaos in the wake of their advance.

U.S. allies have urged an end to the Turkish invasion, which has sparked fears of a renewed humanitarian crisis in the region and a resurgent ISIS threat.
...
he Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday that close to 800 members of a camp holding the families of ISIS fighters had escaped after Turkish shelling.

Some Kurdish guards were forced to leave their posts as fighting neared a camp for displaced people near the town of Ain Eissa, a spokesperson for the U.K.-based observatory told NBC News.

"It’s now chaos in the camp and there are people still escaping," Rami Abdulrahman said early Sunday.

NBC News has been unable to independently verify the claim.

The Turkish military and Turkey-backed Syrian fighters continued to advance toward Ain Eissa, the administrative center of the Kurdish-held areas.

As they drove forward, video and photographs appearing to show alleged atrocities carried out by Turkish-backed fighters spread on social media.

Multiple U.S. officials told NBC News the video, which appeared to show the execution of a Kurd, appeared to be genuine.

The video is disturbing and NBC News has blurred the most graphic images.

Of course Trump has our troops doing which he considers to be the honorable thing in the face of conflict and atrocity after being shelled by Turkish forces. Which is to turn tail and run.

Putin or Turkey told Trump to jump, and he jumped. Better hurry Putin, milk what you can out of Trump before he gets impeached!!

Why would Trump care about his decision that got a bunch of children slaughtered? It didn't cost him any money.

This is right in line with his overall objective...remove the US from foreign wars...and his immediate objective...remove the US from Syria.

He's been very clear that he wants Turkey, Syria, Russia, Kurds and the EU to deal with the problems. He destroyed ISIS...had tens of thousands captured.

Turkey agreed to take control of the terrorists...whatever happens is on them.

Turkey agreed not to kill Kurds...whatever happens is on them.

If Turkey violates their agreement, Trump will devastate their economy.

End of story.

I know he’s malignant narcissist, but I don’t believe two stinking towers explains this.

They violated their agreement. Trump has said nothing. Their economy is humming along. Trump is only interested in destroying the American economy.

There's nothing moral about leaving former friends and allies and their families behind to be slaughtered. This is a stain upon America's honor that won't be going away any time soon. Turkey agreed not to kill Kurds??? Are you really that naive? That's exactly what they're doing and they're doing it indiscriminately. Killing multiple numbers of civilians, including women and children. They are also deliberately shelling prison camps containing captured ISIS fighters so as to give them opportunities to escape and thus create further chaos and havoc behind the Kurdish lines along with providing support for undisciplined armed militias to go around terrorizing people all across the countryside. The Turks bracketed our troops with artillery fire and our President says and does nothing and now has our troops in retreat. And he neither is he going do anything because he has business interests in Turkey. It's absolutely shameful what is happening here and you wait and see. General Mattis's prediction that this may well to lead to ISIS's resurgence is going to be proven to be correct. End of story.

Then tell your Congressman to declare war on...well, someone. Plenty to choose from.

Is there a war going on in SA? Is it a civil war like in Syria? Are the Russians or Iran or Turkey in SA?

What's going on in SA is no different that US forces stationed in Germany.

That’s a stretch; the US military has been a presence in Germany since the end of WW2.

Like hell. You're just beginning with your bull**** story. ISIS is once again. And it is on his hands as well as yours. Revel in it. You elected this disaster.

Perhaps Erdogan knows about the slaughter of a WaPo journalist and the involvement of certain US politicians...

Did he ask Congress if he could send thousands more US troops to Saudi Arabia? Did he consult with anyone in Congress, the Pentagon or State about withdrawing US troops in order to make way for a Turkish invasion? Did he concur with Congress's vote to cancel the sale US arms to Saudi Arabia in light of the atrocities being committed in Yemen and the murder of a US resident journalist in Saudi embassy? No, he didn't. What I want Congress to vote on next is articles of impeachment.

The answer is 'no.'
Has Congress ever authorized troops in Syria?
The answer is 'no.'

Have you already forgotten about the drone and missile attacks on Saudi oil facilities which these are being sent to now help defend? Or the recent alleged Saudi missile attack on a Iranian oil tanker? So these troops certainly could be considered as potentially being placed in harm's way.

Obama: I Have Decided To Bomb Syria, But I Want Congress To Weigh In First

President Obama is ready to go to war in Syria and he says he has the power to do it. But he's not going to pull the trigger until Congress weighs in.

"After careful consideration, I have decided the United States should take action against Syrian regime targets," Obama said in Rose Garden address Saturday.

But he said the attacks won't come until Congress has had its say, which won't happen until they come back to Washington at the end of their August recess.

"Having made my decision as Commander-In-Chief based on what I am convinced is our national security interest, I'm also mindful that I'm president of the world's oldest Constitutional democracy," Obama said. "That's why I've made a second decision. I will seek authorization for the use of force from the American people's representatives in Congress."

Obama said Congressional leaders of both parties have "agreed to schedule a debate and then a vote as soon as Congress comes back in session."

The president said he doesn't need Congressional authorization to strike Syria, but he's going to ask for it anyway.

"While I believe I have the authority to take military action without specific Congressional authorization, I know that the country will be stronger if we take this course and our actions will be even more effective," Obama said. "We should have this debate because the issues are too big for business as usual."

That’s a stretch; the US military has been a presence in Germany since the end of WW2.

So what?

We aren't fighting a war in Germany. We aren't fighting a war in Kuwait. We aren't fighting a war in SA.

ISIS isn't our problem anymore.

He doesn't have to. But Congress is free to declare war anytime they want to...and he will have to follow their instructions.

All of our troops are "potentially in harm's way". I was in harm's way the two times I was stationed in Germany. I was always under threat of terrorist attacks.

But I wasn't fighting a war.
