I don't think that is at the crux of the matter here. I think our gun control policies or lack thereof, played a role in this tragedy. Guy Rivera, who is accused of shooting the officer, was released from a New York prison after serving 5 years for criminal possession of a controlled substance back in 2021. Before that, he served time in 2011 for first-degree assault and was released in 2014. The man driving the car in which he was riding also had a string of prior arrests the most recent being for possession of a loaded firearm. Apparently it is still rather easy for criminals to get ahold of firearms they shouldn't have as there so many firearms out there to be had.

Gun laws don't stop criminals. It's the culture.
