Trump Admin No Longer Protecting Journalists Overseas

This was reported in September, but I just learned about it. I find it amazing.

During an address at Brown University, AG Sulzberger, the NYT publisher, related what happened when a Times journalist was endangered by the Egyptian government.

I believe a free press is an essential ingredient in any functioning democracy. Attacking it is the work of despots.

p.s. 18 months later another NYT reporter arrived in Egypt. He was detained and deported in apparent retaliation for exposing information that was embarrassing to the Egyptian government. When the NYT protested the move, a senior official at the US embassy in Cairo said, "what did you expect would happen? His reporting made the government look bad."

The NYT is not a member of the "free press". They are a left wing propagandist organazation. This fact undermines the argument you're using to validate your complaint.

Perhaps if the NYT published objective journalism instead of their masqueraded editorials, they would merit our government's security assistance . They currently have as much credability as Baghdad Bob.

Yeah, no. The Grey Lady is actually considered the newspaper of record. If you want to footnote a scholarly paper with a news item, for example, you can't do better than the NYT. Its reputation for factual accurate reporting is well known among those of us who live in the real world. Disagreeing with its opinion pieces is fine, but its actual news reporting is top-notch. The Wall Street Journal is similar. While I view its editorial pages as often unhinged, its actual news reporting is reliable.

But I'm glad you made your post. It reveals, as if we need more evidence of the fact, the extent to which Trump, Russia, and the right-wing disinformation machine is humming along.

It seems as if the current administration is willing to risk war or something damn near like it due to the death of an American contractor in a rocket attack at Kirkuk. Either Trump would respond in the same manner if the contractor was an American journalist or there are different degrees of being an American. My money says that under the current administration American journalists are less American than private contractors. :shrug:
