Anyway, trying to make a connection between the President and people choosing to stay at one of his business ventures...a venture that was initiated and completed before he became President, btw...seems to me to be akin to pissing into the wind. In other words, useless.

The emoluments clause doesn't require proving the "quo" - it's intended to prevent the office holder from accepting gifts or emoluments, the "quid," period. The "quo" comes later, and is often hard to prove.

It's similar IMO in principle to what the Clinton Foundation was doing, which was accepting huge donations from interests with business in front of the U.S. government while Hillary was SoS. No one proved any favor tied to those donations, but Bill taking speaking fees from some of those governments and businesses was highly, IMO, problematic as long as Hillary was SoS. The big difference between that and Trump's Hotel in D.C. is Trump derives a direct benefit from that business - he owns the profits. And countries with business in front of Trump are of course, unless they're idiots, use his hotel over competitors because if nothing else, can't hurt, and it might grease the skids a bit.

That's why I say this whole emoluments nonsense is just that...nonsense. Steyer will need to have much more than a "possibility" to make it stick...unless, of course, a judge is crooked. And don't laugh. We've seen some idiotic rulings from crooked judges many times since Trump was elected. Judges who had to get slapped around by the Supremes. It happens.

And I didn't "say" a quo isn't necessary - the Constitution prohibits the quid, and makes no mention of the quo.

All the more reason to maximize the quid, which is prohibited by the Constitution. And just because it doesn't work in one case doesn't mean it doesn't in another, not that it matters to the law all that much.

Right, if the judge is overturned, or rules against Trump, it must be because he or she is corrupt. Makes sense.
