There's More To Life Than Politics

This thread makes me wonder,...who was happier before they got more involved in politics or before they came to this board?

This place is like crack cocaine to me. Addictive as hell but not vert good for me.

Yes, but its good for your friends and family. You got to get it out, but you don't need to bore them with it....

No gardening? Store bought produce sucks.

Not in California. :)
Seriously, I'd forgotten how magnificent the produce is out here and when we moved back both the wife and I realized what we'd been missing.

Marx sounds like a real ****ing jag-off

In some (many?) ways, yeah he was sort of a jag-off.
Not only would he piss off Ludwig von Mises and Milton Friedman, he'd also piss off Paul Krugman and Lawrence Piketty.
He was a demagogue and an extremist. It was his way or the highway.

After a few drinks you see double the produce. Right? :)

Who me? I don't drink. Maybe three drinks a year at most. But my wife has drunk gardened before.
I bet she sees double the produce.
To my knowledge I don't think she's tried gardening after taking a bong hit though.
She might start talking to the plants, as she becomes one haha.

Please believe me when I tell you that I admire conservatives very much for a great many reasons.
Truth be told most people have a little bit of both, a conservative side and a liberal side.
I realize that not everyone accepts that but if you think about people you know in real life, it's difficult to ignore that.

I don't think conservatives are evil, I think that some evil conservatives, (like their evil liberal counterparts) have enormous capacity.
But you can't have liberalism without conservatism and vice versa.
That is, in my humble opinion, the rational way to look at it.

Oh I completely agree. In fact I have some liberal tendencies(especially when it comes to healthcare).

It's pretty cool seeing these threads once in awhile where everyone lightens up. Reminds me not to take anything or anyone too seriously.

I have liberal tendencies myself on education and health care issues.

Always annoys me when someone thinks I should agree 100% with my party's platform. Every side has good ideas along with their idiotic ones.

You mean like UHC might actually wind up costing less in the long run? (assuming we're careful to implement it the right way)
If that's your angle, that's actually a CONSERVATIVE way of looking at it. :D

If for no other reason, I support some kind of well written UHC approach because the evidence shows that you get more bang for the buck, less corporate red tape and a more wellness oriented type of service. But it has to be done right.

We aren't going to get away with simply "carbon copying" another country's system and just plopping it down here in America.
It's going to be an arduous and tedious task of herculean proportions and it's very likely we will wind up with both a public AND private sector system coexisting alongside each other, and some overlap in coverage in order to meet the needs of people who have the ways and means to jump lines and pay for it.
And by the way, another homage to conservatism:
If you CAN afford to jump the line and seek out private sector services, you should be able to, there's nothing wrong with getting a better widget if you can afford to.

And we all should argue and fight about this because it is worth it to do so.
I do not object to all the arguing and fussing and fighting over implementing healthcare reform, as long as everyone tries extra hard to be factual about it, and not pimping for some organized corporate money agenda that benefits the folks who own the infrastructure.

I can guarantee you that if you ask me about my views on a lot of these favorite punch lines from the Left you might be surprised at my answers, chief among which:

I DO NOT SUPPORT OPEN BORDERS.

Another one:

SANCTUARY CITIES and sanctuary states, etc.
I am pretty sure the Left went about two or three exits too far on that one and we would do well to water down the whole sanctuary business to a much narrower interpretation. I understand about cutting the underdog a little break, but we're way beyond that now, especially where not allowing immigration enforcement to do their jobs is concerned with regard to persons with a criminal background. There's more but I don't want to go off into the weeds. Query me on a thread about sanctuary cities and I'll go into more detail.

Wait a minute, to me this sounds more like we ARE taking it more seriously, because we're putting aside all the namecalling and false accusations somewhat and getting down to the actual meat and potatoes.

It's a ****ing RELIEF!!! It's a relief because I know we will find common ground.
Trust me, filtering out the hate and discontent and arguing about the extremes and honoring the common ground is the most refreshing thing I've seen on here in ages.

Now, yer talkin'!!!!

How much does a decent beach house go for? Out here in Kalifornia, it's millions, or handed down through the family, neither of which I am fortunate to be familiar with.

Chesapeake Bay real estate prices are astoundingly out in the stratosphere, and can match the prices of waterfront property in Cali very easily. The time to have bought in the Chesapeake Bay area was maybe back in the 1970's if you were of middle class means. Now you'd definitely have to be a gazillionaire.

You think that's something, get a load of this.

I don't support tax cuts for the rich!

Give the fella making $40,000 - $150,000 the biggest cut. They'll spend it and it will recirculate throughout the economy.

It's more fun when we call each other poopie heads.

Absolutely.
Will Rogers in 1932:

"This election was lost four and six years ago, not this year.
They [Republicans] didn’t start thinking of the old common fellow till just as they started out on the election tour.
The money was all appropriated for the top in the hopes that it would trickle down to the needy.
Mr. Hoover was an engineer. He knew that water trickles down. Put it uphill and let it go and it will reach the driest little spot. But he didn’t know that money trickled up.
Give it to the people at the bottom and the people at the top will have it before night, anyhow.
But it will at least have passed through the poor fellows hands.
They saved the big banks, but the little ones went up the flue."

It's more fun when we call each other poopie heads.

For about the first ten minutes on the first day maybe.
I am definitely much more interested in arguing about STUFF, not just trading asshattery back and forth.
