However, in the civilized world, proper respect would exclude any Russian or conquest supporting names. Just as us Americans would object to being labeled "Colonies in Rebellion".

and other variants are …

Little Russia

This is a pejorative name given by the Russians to diminish Ukraine and add to the myth that Ukraine is Russian land.

Kleinrussland

I've never heard of that, and I lived in Ukraine.

Ruthenia / Ruthenien

Archaic. A throwback to when various empires (Polish, Lithuanian, Habsburg, Austrian, etc.) ruled Ukrainian lands.

the Ukraine … with an Article ….

The article "the" in front of a proper name in English was oftentimes used to denote that it belonged to something larger... the Sudentenland, the Maldives, etc.

According to the US Department of State and other authoritative sources, only The Gambia and The Bahamas should formally include the article.

At independence in 1991, 3 nations clarified their official national name when joining the United Nations....

Russia = Russian Federation, Bylorussian SSR = Belarus, Ukrainian SSR = Ukraine.

And the capital city of Ukraine is Kyiv (Ukrainian spelling), not Kiev (Russian spelling).

in german …

schweiz, iran ,irak have the definitive article, too …

Okay, Little Russia and Kleinrussland are the same thing, and no country wants to be called a "little" version of another country. This term comes from the era of the Russian Empire, especially from the time when Ukraine and Belarus were not yet controlled by Russia, but were part of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth (and also the various Cossack entities). It basically meant the people who were culturally and religiously related to the Russian (east slavs, Orthodox church) but were outside Russian control. The first time the term is ever used seem to predate even that as Yuri II of Galich- Volhynia in the 1300s seem to at one point call his realm Little Rus. The term is in contrast with Great Russia, the name for the Russians inside the Russian Empire. The term persisted after the Russian Empire annexed most of modern Ukraine (they actually never controlled all of it), and Ukrainian elites adopted the term as a separate identity from the Russians up north.

Ruthenia/ Ruthenien, this is latinization of the term Rus. And Rus was a common identity for all the east Slavs since the rise of Kievan Rus, and the Rurikid era. Over time the term morphed to mean the Orthodox parts of Poland- Lithuania (basically western Ukraine and Belarus), and later the term was used as an alternative name for the Ukrainian speaking parts of Galizia when it was a part of Austria- Hungary. Another use for the word Ruthenia was Carpathian Ruthenia, which was the name of the parts of the Kingdom of Hungary where a variant of East Slavic was spoken (the Rusyns).
