the UK under Lock Down

...I mentioned Germany somewhere in here where the Minister-Presidents of the individual states are currently engaged in a "I can lift lockdown measures the fastest" stampede. Most descriptive example of ensuing stupidity being a golf course that, due to being located across the border of two states, has half its greens cordoned off with "do not enter" tapes while one can swing the clubs on the other.
...

I remember reading that and thinking while there probably wouldn't be a golf course straddling the England/Scotland border, there could well be one on the English/Welsh one, and indeed there is:

BBC forums are rife with nationalists pouting at each other today after the Welsh police association asked English people not to drive to Wales as they are now allowed to - all that Brexit lovey-dovey talk between England and Wales combining to drive home the Brext message was straight out the window.

Oh blimey I can imagine, I try and avoid the brain-melt that is the BBC 'Have Your Say'. Personally, since I'm at gf's house in England for the lockdown, I don't even know if I can drive home or not especially since a neighbour who works in the local hospital icu has keys to my house in case they need to self-quarantine.

Well, the English pre-lockdown run on Snowdonia appears to not have gone unnoticed.

Same sort of stupidity that happened elsewhere, certainly in France, Italy, Germany and here in Spain.

Not just Snowdonia - Cumbria continues to appear a dark green on the Map of cases across the UK.

Oxenholme, Kendall and Keswick are very popular with Japanese and Chinese tourists all year round - you used to ALWAYS see large groups getting on or off the intercity trains here between a stop-off in Liverpool for the Beatles museum and then onto Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Imo blaming Chinese and Japanese tourists for Cumbria being "dark green" is wrong.

We also had lots of Chinese, South Korean and Japanese tourists here and yet we only have 3779 cases as of yesterday.

And yet I also hear the accusations that it was thier fault that Spain got the virus, totally ignoring the white business men travelling to and from Chinese factories, to the business hubs of Milan, Madrid and Barcelona... Which has a bigger chance, that Wuhan, a relatively poor part of China, has people wealthy enough to travel on fancy vacation to Europe, or some white man going to Wuhan to check up on his merchandise being made in Chinese sweet shops?

Just saying it does not look good.

Ah, you are confusing me with Alfons / Litwin / TAAC?

Yesterday the evidence for Scotlands first cases came through - International business conference for Nike employees. The virus came in from somewhere PeteEU - it didn't emerge all by itself and it isn't xenophobic to say so.

PNG / New Zealand etc etc countries which cut international movement immediately have almost closed all cases down.

So could that case have come via London by any chance? Were the participants from the UK? Think of the odds that a Chinese tourist that works out of Wuhan, travels to the Scotland... Not saying it is impossible, but neither is getting hit by a meteor.

My point is that it is so easy to blame "the yellow man" (which you basically did by naming Chinese and Japanese, two distinct different people even in apperance), but the reality is that there is one hell of a bigger chance that it was Brit coming from China or Italy/Spain that brought it and not some Asian tourist. Wuhan is a poor place and don't have many people going on expensive tourist trips to Europe.

And who the hell would want to go to that area of the UK..no offense. Might be popular with Brits, but droves of international tourists? Maybe if the got lost. [emoji41]

In Spain we have 3 main cases. A German in the Canary Islands was the first case supposedly in Spain. Then came an resident Italian citizen in Barcelona, followed shortly by a businessman from Madrid that had been in Milan. Add to that, suspected military personnel cases in November all connected to a Wuhan military Olympics, then there is zero evidence that Chinese or other Asians brought the virus to any part of Europe.

And as I stated, we have had tons of Chinese, South Koreans, Japanese and other Asian tourists here, and even the top Wuhan football team got stuck here for months and no cases can be linked to them.

You just negated everything else you tried to argue. Maybe next time do a bit of research on tourism in the Lake District before you get all defensive?

Record high for Lake District Chinese visitor numbers | Border - ITV News
No offence, but percentage changes means jack **** if you don't get the actual numbers. The 286% change could mean from 1 to 286..just saying. I have seen those puff pieces in newspapers before and in other context as well. It is great for the propoganda aspect, but in reality gives little actual information. So and so crime has gone up 50%, scandal... Yea it went from 2 to 3...

I would wager that far far more people from the London area go to Cumbria than Chinese tourists. So the chances of an infected Londoner spreading it is much higher than a random Chinese tourist.

Also, who would mix with the locals more.. Chinese tourists that don't speak the language or Londoners going to the pub. Here in Spain Chinese tourists are bussed in and they primarily stick to the group. They don't mix much with locals. Hell in my local very tourist town, they even have lunch at the only Chinese restaurant in town.

And let's not forget this is in freaking winter, so tourist numbers in general would be at a minimum. The odds..

Listen I am not trying to insult you or anything, I am just pointing out that the chances of it being Chinese nationals from a poor region of China, buying a ticket to an isolated part of the UK is astronomically small, where as Brit that has been in contact with someone coming from China, or Asia or even Italy is far higher.

Remember the Brit from Singapore that infected scores of people in Europe via a French alpine resort? Or the Italian working in Austria that basically caused most of Iceland and Denmarks initial infections?

By saying it was or might have been Chinese or Japanese tourists, you are only playing into the irrational xenophobic racists twats arms.

Running away from facts makes things worse. You can always defeat xenophobes with basic facts.

Anyhow, to address your charges - I said early in March when a couple of my ex students now teaching at the University in Cumbria came back from Berlin with the virus, I also mentioned the very first personal case which was a teacher friend who had just come back from Italy but neither they, nor the Chinese / Japanese are the source of all the infections, that data has to be done - though Boris' incompetent Govt won't do it.

You've successfully sidetracked the issue that the Lake District has one of the worst rates outside London - which was my main point.

I've been hearing scare stories from Barrow, it is a very poor area with almost zero employment opportunities except going in to the South Lakes (very posh) and the actual Lakes tourist area (very busy)

Anyhow, on another issue - I rarely agree with Piers Morgan on much but if the claimed 55,000 figure is correct - there should be sackings and resignations in Govt.

Yeah, I'm not much of a Piers fan myself but it's hard to remain malignant when he justly rips into a moron like Bridgen in this manner.

And what a constant example of "pathetic" the latter constantly is.

That 50,000+ dead number keep reappearing. Now even the BBC - ever so slow to post the latest stories for fear of complaints has an article on it.

The 50k+ dead figure really isn't a surprise to anyone with an ounce of common sense in the UK. My only surprise is that the figure isn't 100k+, but I'm certain we'll reach that dreadful milestone in the not too distant future.

Back in March when lockdowns were being enforced round Europe, we all saw the scenes in London with packed underground trains, a Champions League match against an Italian team, the Cheltenham races, concerts, people blatantly flaunting a basically non existent lockdown. Functioning construction sites with no health measures in place, the list is shamelessly long.

Personally I have been fairly strict with my lockdown, and have tried to avoid people as best as I can - but honestly I can't say it's felt like a real lockdown. I've been out everyday exercising and meeting friends at the same time for a chat, obviously we kept our distance. Popping to the shops once a week, walking around the local park. Had I of been inclined to do so, I could've easily abused those privileges if I wanted to, and no doubt millions probably did.

The guys on here in Spain, and some of my Italian and Spanish friends in the real world, now they've had it really tough.

The majority of the Brits do care, but sadly a contagious virus doesn't just affect the carelessness of the minority.

The aviation industry is calling on the government to provide greater clarity on plans to quarantine for a fortnight all travellers coming to Britain, amid concerns that the measures could have severe repercussions for the travel and tourism industries.

It has been reported that anyone entering the UK, including Britons returning home, will soon have to self-isolate for 14 days due to the coronavirus crisis.

Airlines UK, which represents British Airways, EasyJet and other UK-based airlines, said the proposal would “effectively kill international travel to and from the UK, and cause immeasurable damage to the aviation industry and wider UK economy”.

It added: “Nobody is going to go on holiday if they’re not able to resume normal life for 14 days, and business travel would be severely restricted.”

Government urged to reconsider plans for two-week quarantine for returning holidaymakers

This is finally a step in the right direction. International arrivals including returning Britons need to be quarantined for two weeks. The new measure would effectively kill international travel to and from the UK, but the Covid-19 outbreak has been contained in my region because the international terminals are entirely closed down at the airport. Russia now has the second highest number of patients in the world because returning Russians from Europe were not properly quarantined for two weeks.

Well, with WHO telling us that this virus will be around for a while, most countries will see that figure. My current reading is suggesting two paths -

a) most Pandemics last a maximum of 2-4 years. Spanish Flu's timeline seems to fit in slightly less time. Pandemic meaning worldwide spread of a new disease.
b) previous reports people who had it once were getting it again turns out now to mainly be false detection because of expiration of dead lungcells.
c) antibodies "may" last up to 2 years.
d) lots of kids in the UK and US have now had a rare condition linked to Coronavirus

This virus will be around forever like the flu, in many different mutations. In fact I suspect we have had it for years, but it only now mutated to become this deadly and contagious.

As for the rare condition. Yes it is bad but still not that many in the grandscale of things. Hope it stays that way.

Also antibodies. The problem is that to get antibodies you need to get sick, even just slightly. Many of those who are asymptomatic are not getting sick enough to generate antibodies, which is a problem.

The first confirmed case in Belgium in a man who came from Wuhan, was totally asymptomatic and has no antibodies in him today. I suspect that there are many like this.

My worry is the lack of action and control in the UK, will make the UK the gateway to reinfection in Europe from places like the Americas.

That's bad news for Spain then, as it's usually the number one summer destination for Brits. They could end up being more of liability to the Spanish coasts than the Madrileños.

It's bad news in general for everyone as Brits are in general one of the most travelling people around...guessing it has to do with the depressing summer weather in the UK [emoji14].

But what can you do. As it stands now based on new infections, US, UK and Russian citizens should be banned from leaving their country. Same with Brazilians and most South Americans, but that is another story.

But a lot can happen either way the next month, so let's hope for better times.
