The psychology of climate change denial

No. The paradigm shift takes place within the scientific community.

I’m sure you would believe that if Fox News, Limbaugh, the darker recesses of Reddit, Twitter, and the usual collection of right wing trash blogs is what you think of as “news”.

But American utilities are not investing in coal or nuclear power plants. Exactly ONE coal fired power plant has been permitted in the US in the last twenty year. And tha was in Alaska, and that for a college power plant.

No new nuclear plants have been ordered in a very long time.

The investment capital is going into wind, solar, and battery storage.

Unlike the fossil fuel choices, these are cheap to build, easily scalable, and generate quick returns on investment.

They are also free of high capital costs, and environmental liability issues.

There isnt a major auto or truck manufacturer anywhere who doesn’t have an electric vehicle program. Almost all of them have announced their intention to go full electric within the next decade. The 400 mile range barrier is about to fall, as is the. $100/Kw cost point.

For all that, there is one truly compelling thing.

Unless you live in Idaho, or some similarly remote place, you cant help but have noticed how much cleanser the air is and how much more blue the sky is, and how much sharper everything appears to be.

There isnt much talk about that in the media, But everyone I know has noticed it and remarked on it.

All we had to do was turn of the ICEs for a little while, and air cleared.

People aren’t going to forget that.

Theyve been able to see with thier own eyes and lungs what clean air really looks like.

Well all the trends are in the opposite direction. I wouldn’t hold my breath. The only hope the denialists have now is getting populist politicians and corporate interests to stoke up enough propaganda and confusion among enough of the uneducated masses to keep the charade dragging on for a few more years. Good luck.

The truth is the opposite. Research results are definitely running in the skeptics' direction. The drama is whether the research will affect the public debate before the alarmists can lock in their prescriptions via legislation.

Sorry, but I don't do Fox, Limbaugh, Reddit or Twitter. I do the Washington Post, New Yorker, New York Review of Books and PBS News Hour.

Coal is indeed probably finished in the US, but it is, and will continue to be, a growing baseload generating source elsewhere for quite some time. The ultimate answer is nuclear, but the time is not yet right. Luckily we have natural gas to bridge the gap.

There has indeed been investment in renewables, as Michael Moore pointed out.:lamo

And so it goes.

No they’re not- WUWT blogs notwithstanding.

Actually has very little to do with WUWT. The steady downward trend of climate sensitivity estimates, the absence of hockey sticks in paleoclimate reconstructions, the lack of increase in hurricanes or other extreme weather and the onset of a period of cooling in global temperature all play a part. It's the climate sensitivity trend that's most important because it points clearly to a larger solar role in climate than the IPCC has admitted thus far.

Not at all. That’s only what they say in WUWT blogs.

Wrong, there are thousands of scientists who deny climate alarmism: Global Warming Petition Project

Yeah. Lots of idiots do stupid stuff.

I mean, look at Trump voters.

But it’s the scientists, specifically in the form of organized scientific societies, that are important here.

That petition is a joke. A bunch of dentists and podiatrists

Yet we never see you quote anything from those sources but you frequently cite one of the most egregious lying deniers of CAGW, Anthony Watts.

Your brief and intermittent attention span is the basis for that comment.

Oh, that famous Jack self-delusion---that you're hard to read and some sort of polymath--a man of science and rational mind. You're never at your most ridiculous when you try to masquerade as someone operating from reason and fact.

Yeah...you do tend to use a wide variety of BS.

I'm not the one who sprays insults and avoids substance.

Nope. Post #3733 does not depend on WUWT.

Remember that 97% consensus figure that you guys have tried so hard to spin? Well, it turns out that number is up to 99% now- just in the last year. There is no paradigm shift coming.

“ Three studies published in Nature and Nature Geoscience use extensive historical data to show there has never been a period in the last 2,000 years when temperature changes have been as fast, global, and extensive as in recent decades...

The authors say this highlights how unusual warming has become in recent years as a result of industrial emissions.

“There is no doubt left — as has been shown extensively in many other studies addressing many different aspects of the climate system using different methods and data sets,” said Stefan Brönnimann, from the University of Bern and the Pages 2K consortium of climate scientists.

Commenting on the study, other scientists said it was an important breakthrough in the “fingerprinting” task of proving how human responsibility has changed the climate in ways not seen in the past.

“This paper should finally stop climate change deniers claiming that the recent observed coherent global warming is part of a natural climate cycle. This paper shows the truly stark difference between regional and localized changes in climate of the past and the truly global effect of anthropogenic greenhouse emissions,” said Mark Maslin, professor of climatology at University College London.

Previous studies have shown near unanimity among climate scientists that human factors — car exhausts, factory chimneys, forest clearance, and other sources of greenhouse gases — are responsible for the exceptional level of global warming.

Time to let this go, Jack. Find something else to get all excited about. You’re beating a dead horse. This one is not going anywhere.

As Michael Crichton said, "Consensus is the first refuge of scoundrels."

New Studies: Europe Is No Warmer Today Than It Was During Medieval Times

By Kenneth Richard on 13. April 2020
Two new papers use tree ring proxy evidence to suggest modern European temperatures are neither unusual nor higher than they were during the Medieval Warm Period. Image Source: Esper et al. (2020) Esper et al. (2020) have produced a new temperature reconstruction for Southern Europe to complement past reconstructions for Northern and Central Europe. They […]

New Study: Greenland Was ‘4–5 °C Warmer Than Today’ ~9000 Years Ago…When The Arctic Was Nearly Sea-Ice Free

By Kenneth Richard on 6. February 2020
Scientists (Syring et al., 2020) find almost sea ice-free conditions pervaded a much warmer northern Greenland region during the Early Holocene. Arctic sea ice extent has “continuously” grown for ~4800 years, with modern conditions a bit lower than the peak of the last few centuries. Image Source: Syring et al., 2020 In a new paper […]

New Study Indicates Iceland Must Have Been 3°C Warmer During The Early Holocene To Match The Glacier Record

By Kenneth Richard on 21. May 2020
During the Early Holocene, when CO2 levels lingered near 260 ppm, ice core records suggest surface temperatures in Iceland were about 3°C warmer than today. Iceland’s extensive lakes and glaciers topography provides a verifiable history of the region’s paleoclimates. For example, scientists can infer summer temperatures 3°C warmer than today in Iceland to account for […]

Scientists don’t agree. And they are agreeing less and less. What happened to, as you said earlier, “ The paradigm shift takes place within the scientific community”?
