The Latest: Dylann Roof sentenced to die for church slayings

I personally disagree with the death penalty. I think he should just rot in prison for the rest of his life without parole... he deserves that more than a quick painless death. I don't think it's morally right for the state or anyone to slay a defenseless human being, no matter how evil he is.

the only one case where I agree with the death penalty is if the individual is still a danger to the public even if he is a prisoner... i'm not sure how you would make that case, but I reserve to think that it is possible.

I can respect that position. My objection to the death penalty is more moralistic that just that. On the other hand, I also would not object to having doctor assisted suicides for people sentenced to life in prison.

sort of like Soylent Green (Edward G. Robinson IIRC)

Fewer? Lets see. Capital case...automatic state legal review. Schedule an immediate appeal. If there is standing, schedule an appeal at a federal court level. Apply for clemency. How long should that take in the Dylan Roof case? What do you think would be different?

I don't think you should be able to apply for clemency. If you're guilty, you're guilty. Off the idiot and move on.

Making the death penalty cheaper would require eliminating or reducing some of these steps.

Hoping people suffer is a normal human response. A penal system created to cause suffering...THAT would be creepy.

Still creepy.

Would you agree that is an adequate appeals process?

How about we make it so that the only way to get an appeal, outside of the mandatory appeal, is to have evidence that the criminal is factually innocent. Most of these appeals are about "I don't like the sentence".

No, proving a negative can be challenging.

I try to ponder the structure of the justice system on the assumption that I might one day be wrongfully accused of a crime.

People have been executed for crimes they didn't commit, even with our current lengthy appeals and review process.

But that's really what needs to happen. The state has already proven its case, at least twice at this point. They have been convicted, sentenced and appealed at least twice. Now it needs to be their responsibility to prove that they didn't do it and convince a jury that they were falsely convicted.

And I don't care if people have been executed for crimes they haven't committed. People have been imprisoned for decades for crimes they haven't committed too. The criminal justice system is not perfect. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes and try not to make them again.

Well, I do care. Imprisonment can end, death cannot.

You can never give anyone back the years they rotted in a cell.

I wonder what he will order for his final meal.

Apparently many States have largely limited or stopped that practice due to some of the more... Colorful orders over the years and in some cases, massive orders that were never consumed.

Some states put a $ limit on it.

No, it isn't.

Yes it is.Normal people want mass murderers to suffer. Abnormal creepy people whine over scumbags suffering.

Only creepy people get off on wanting anyone to suffer. That's kind of the difference between normal people and the psychopathic or sociopathic. Which of the three are you?

If you're going to have the death penalty, I guess it's to deal with people just like Dylann Roof, however the fact that this murderous monster is the very antithesis of humanity doesn't mean I suddenly drop my fundamental objection to the death penalty. He should spend a long life in high security incarceration. I hope the sentence gets commuted, not for his sake, but for that of civilisation.

Indeed. And about the only thing you can say here is that in this case, it's 100% known that Roof is the culprit. However, the general use of the DP still has all the faults and failure modes, and to execute this guy we have invoked that flawed system that offers society on whole no added benefit. I think this kid is a monster and should be punished for his crimes, but Life in Prison without Parole would have worked just as well.

I think many of us have been under no misapprehension about you for some time, James.

You going to cry a river if Dylann Roof's execution takes longer than normal and he suffers a little? Are you going to cry if they don't serve him filet mignon instead of bologna sandwiches?

You appear to equate civilised standards of behaviour with weakness. That puts you in a cohort with the most brutal and bloodthirsty of humanity; instincts fairly close to those of the likes of Roof himself. You always seem to argue for the most violent and inhumane solutions to any situation, which unsurprisingly are no kind of solution at all, just a recipe for perpetuating violence and bloodshed.

You seem to equate weakness with civility. It is civil and normal to want mass murderers and people who commit other atrocious crimes to suffer for the crimes they committed. Its the bleeding heart loony abnormal leftists who thinks these monsters are merely suffering from sort of disease that should be cured and deserve our sympathy instead of made to pay for their crimes. .
