• This is a political forum that is non-biased/non-partisan and treats every person's position on topics equally. This debate forum is not aligned to any political party. In today's politics, many ideas are split between and even within all the political parties. Often we find ourselves agreeing on one platform but some topics break our mold. We are here to discuss them in a civil political debate. If this is your first visit to our political forums, be sure to check out the RULES. The Efficacy of Outrage

The Loft. The list of DP extras at the bottom, I know what a few are, I've been dumped into the basement before. I didn't know the loft existed and it's purpose. I figured it was just a non political chat room
MOSTly non-political. As the Guidelines state:
  • No broad insults, demonizing, or belittling of political parties, groups, or views.
No libtards or tea baggers. No "democrats hate the country" or "republicans are bigots" type of comments. Broad scale insults do nothing but detract from the conversation and inflame a situation. Respectfully disagreeing with a party or view is one thing, calling them evil or a blight upon America is not.

  • Keep the aggressive sarcasm, condescension, and belittling to an absolute minimum.
In debate discrediting an opponent’s position can, at times, be as useful as making a strong case yourself. However, in a discussion where individuals are sharing views or ideas it’s a good way to make the other side up and leave. This place isn't about proving your view as correct; it’s about having a dialog about those views.

  • Short “One liner” posts used to troll or derail are frowned upon.
We understand humor is inherent in discussions, and it is not against the rules here. However one liners that are just being petulant or trolling for a reaction that would perhaps be ignored in the regular forum could result in action here.

  • Clearly define the topic of your thread, and stay within the realm of a threads stated topic.
Minor thread drift is normal and occurs in all threads. However, when a threads topic is clearly laid out the conversation should stay primarily about that topic, with only small divergence to other connected issues. If major thread drift occurs report it and focus your own posts on the topic rather than engaging the individual about their potential drifting.

  • Hyperbolic and over the top attacks on political entities should be avoided.
Let’s face it, politics is a team sport. Nothing derails threads faster than a flippant unnecessary insult thrown towards a politician, individual, or group on the other side. The Loft, while having a causal atmosphere, is meant to be a semi-formal and high brow and how posters approach issues and political figures is part of that.

It is difficult to not react viscerally when cherished institutions are attacked, but I think it is still possible to discuss complicated and emotional topics in a rational, non-disparaging way ... or at least I'd like to attempt to.

I've started a number of threads here to try to discuss thorny issues:

A serious discussion about serious questions in the 2024 election season

How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them

On Coups, Attempts, Apologias, and Future Concerns

THE HARD TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION

Some are based on "Think pieces", often from the Atlantic. They often peter out quickly. Not a lot of people want to address nuance. (I even posted a thread about that. The Death of Nuance)

Even if the effort is often ineffective, I think it is still important to try.

Has anyone from one particular political persuasion joined this discussion yet?

America's culture of violence. Academically we're failing as a nation, but in violence we're strong. Compared with other Western countries, North America is extraordinarily violent. So, of course its gonna make its way into social media and news outlets. I wonder how many people were murdered in Chicago over the weekend.
If you want low violence, just take away freedom...................................make your choice

Tim & Sarah React to Vance’s Reckless Speech (The Bulwark)

This was an interesting and deep discussion of the event, and JD Vance's podcast was chilling. It is a GREAT example of what this thread is about - the Efficacy of Outrage. I think anyone would find it appalling, and dangerous.

Well, for what it's worth you inspired me to give it a try myself. I'll try to prioritize more activity and focus here as well.
