The coming death of just about every rock legend

No one lives forever. There will never be another Benny Goodman or the Andrew Sisters. Every generation has its own music heroes, and swears they were the best. I admit, sorrowfully, some of my grandkids believe Justin Bieber is a music god. Frightening.

But there is always great new music if you listen. Some of it is derivative, but art builds on art.

Interesting you say that.

My daughter was wrapped up in Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, etc. until she heard a Beatles album... Her reaction was "wow, that's incredible... Are they new?". We opened her eyes to the Beatles, Stones, Pink Flod on vinyl.... SHE said modern (for her time) music lacked depth.

Everything old, becomes new again.

My four kids and 16 grandkids almost all play some musical instrument. The two youngest received ukes from grandpa this summer and play everyday. They love to sing. I've more than 10k vinyl lps, my grandfather's 78's, a few thousand cd's, countless tapes of live shows. The grandkids are here often mining the trove, fascinated by what they find and learn. For all of them, music is like breathing. The same with nephews and nieces. Some are making careers in music. In front of me they argue over who gets which of my 19 guitars when I die. :) My LW & T doesn't leave the decisions to them.

Justin Bieber actually wasn't that horrible as far as bubble gum pop goes when he was younger and had Usher mentoring him. Puberty was not kind to his talent or his personality.

This one we'll have to agree to disagree upon. Never thought much of Usher either. Perhaps a matter of taste.

I am not of fan of Usher's music but he clearly has talent. I just don't see some great fundamental difference between JB singing Baby and the Beatles singing She Loves You. They are just made for airplay pop records in an endless line of Top 40 blah.

Music wraps itself around emotion.

Hence it is very hard for us to appreciate music that we do not identify with.

This also gives rise to the phenomena that "our music" is/was better than others music.

Our emotions become intertwined, represent by the music of our youth, when we felt emotion the strongest. When it gave us a tribal identity too.

It is not the approach, the actural notes or the excellence of musicianship that makes us favor one music era or genre over another.

My guiding self penned, approach to music has long been, there is good music and there is great music, there is no bad music.

there is no bad music.

You haven't heard my wife sing. Dog tries to hide under our bed with his blanket over his head, and whines.

There is really bad music out there. The planned dissonance of Bulgarian choir music, can make people physically ill. The unplanned dissonance of midwest polka bands which can't keep a beat and stay on key does make people physically ill.

The primary purpose of art is to stimulate emotion. Success varies. Someone once said, "90% of art is drek, but oh that 10%!"

Wait, are you suggesting that something bad is about to befall Fred Durst, that will cause his demise?? My God..... IF True, that really would be a tragedy for the music world, and the arts in general! But I prefer to believe that Fred is healthy, and that he'll be making beautiful music for several more decades! That's the only future I can accept.... *sigh* lol

Sometimes, a song that might not sound so great becomes perfect in the right circumstances.

MOUSE!!! :lamo

This is so hilarious. We had almost the exact same experience, except our daughter accidentally discovered the Fab Four on her own.
At the moment I do not remember the first song by them that she liked but she was singing it to herself one day and I began to finish the verse for her and she was surprised that I knew the song, until I explained to her that it was written around 1965 or so.

"OMG The Beatles started out in the Sixties?"

"Uhhhh, yeah!"

Her expression was priceless... "But I didn't think you would have been a fan of The Beatles because you don't like boy bands."

Another belly laugh as I explained to her that, unlike "boy bands", John, Paul, George and Ringo actually played their own instruments and wrote most of their own songs, which is why The Beatles were NOT a "boy band".

I still have not convinced her of the genius of Leon Russell yet. Maybe someday.
I mean, my connection with him being what it is, she knows he was quite the musical genius but I have yet to catch her listening to any of his songs yet.
Sigh, it pains me a little because so many of our other Leon Russell friends are always going on about how they've managed to turn their kids into Leon fans and yet here we are, my wife and I and so far, no joy as of yet. :lamo

It might still happen though, as she is beginning to become a fan of classic rock, and some of her little girlfriends seem to be giving her some pointers, too.

Still, it's always really funny when she "discovers" a talent from our era and rushes in acting like it's something we've never heard before.
One of the joys of parenthood, especially with a daughter that has such a great sense of humor...she tolerates it pretty well when we start guffawing and finishing song lyrics for her.

"OMG you guys know all these bands?"

I still laugh about the day my daughter, who was all of 24 then, called me to ask if I’d ever heard of a band called “King Crimson?”

After telling her that I’d first listened to them 20 years before she was even born I asked why.

“They’re really good.”

I did something right with that girl.
