The 2018 Major Leage Baseball Thread

Sure, but it was a reasonable bet to forego the prospects to try to close the gap and win the NL East.

Well, I disagree. The first 4 months of the season the Nats showed little life, to expect them to get hot over the last 2 months with the same players was poor judgement. And BTW in 2-3 weeks after the July 31st deadline they started cleaning house by trading Murphy, etc.

They rolled the dice and lost.

Yes they did.

Thinking was they had suffered from injuries, and a healthy roster could recover.

Yanks trade for Seattle's Paxton... Give up 3 prospects, including top-rated lefty Justus Sheffield....A little surprising considering Sheffield was suppose to be almost untouchable because he's a lefty and was possibly going to be in the Yankee rotation next year. But they went for a proven Lefty in Paxton. Paxton is injury prone though, so it's a bit of a gamble.

The Yankees needed to upgrade their starting rotation. This is a start.

The Mets are nearing a trade to acquire Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz...

Mets need a ton of help in the bullpen. IMO the BP should be their first priority. But IDK. about Cano though. He's 36. Citifield is not a hitter friendly park. Even with the Mariners picking up some of Cano's contract. 14-15 mil is a lot to pay for a 36 year old singles hitter..

Any reason they would want the Yankees cachet?

This essentially will be two trades in 1:

Diaz for a Mets top prospect

Cano for a Mets player that is overpaid......

The Mets will have to fork over some cash but it isn't a horrible deal.

Any reason they would want the Yankees cachet?

They need a closer, and the Mariners would be paying for about $10 mil a year of Cano's salary. So Seattle would be forking over $40-50 mil. Leaving the Mets to pay Cano $14-15 mil or so a year.

His age bothers me. The Mets need to get younger position players, not older. Add in Cano's steroid suspension... It's a gamble.

I'm hearing Bruce might be in the deal. So that's some money off the Mets books.. And if the Mets don't believe Jeff McNeil is the real deal, then they need a 2nd baseman.

The Diaz-Cano for Bruce-Swarzak-prospects deal just got announced.

TopCat, where are you?

I remember 5 years ago when you said the Robinson Cano signing would elevate the Seattle Mariners into the playoffs. Wrong.

Talk about a franchise with no direction:

Washington Nationals now commit the majority of their payroll to 3 starting pitchers.

Corbin was overpaid. 6 years, $140? He's not even a top flight starter.

[h=1]Law: Giving Patrick Corbin whopper of a deal worth the risk for Washington[/h]Patrick Corbin's hefty six-year deal could hurt the Nationals in the long run. But with their lack of October success, GM Mike Rizzo can't be blamed for wanting to win now.

6 years is 'surprising' to say the least.

But I think some of it has to do with how active the Mets are being, and will be.. And the Manny and Harper rumors with the Phils and Braves. In other words, the NL East maybe not be the NL least for the next few years.

I don't think the Nats are done signing starting pitchers.

Barraclough and Rosenthal? Need more...Need more Lefties in the BP too.. But I can't say much, the Mets only have ONE lefty in their BP. They definitely need to address that.

:) I always said the best job in sports is left-handed relief pitcher.
