The 2018 Major Leage Baseball Thread

It’s not fair, it’s not supposed to be, and life isn’t fair. MLB is not a fair sport where all teams have equal footing in every game
By that argument we shouldnt have salary caps either to make things an even (or somewhat of an even) playing field

MLB doesn’t have salary caps, and they shouldn’t. If a team wants to spend more, or spend less, that’s their prerogative. There should be no cap or minimum except the agreed upon minimum salaries.

[h=1]Nationals invite Montero to spring training[/h]Free-agent catcher Miguel Montero has agreed to a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals with an invitation to major league spring training. Montero is expected to compete with Pedro Severino for a backup job behind staring catcher Matt Wieters.

I, for one, am glad you’re posting every backup minor league signing deal going on with the Nats.

Fascinating stuff.

I wonder who the sixth and seventh outfielder will be. Keep us posted!

The Dodgers have a logjam in left field and have to decide what to do with Matt Kemp who at this point might just be extra baggage.

I'm hearing Hosmer wants an 8 year contract... lol

I think the owners are finally waking up to the fact that signing these guys to GUARANTEED long term contracts is crazy
I agree, but if the owners are colluding to prevent free agents from signing then thats illegal under MLB rules

Yes it is illegal, but IMO this has more to do with the new, harsher luxury tax that is actually making teams like the Dodgers and Yankees SHED payroll, and Marlins fire sale and again massive long term contracts to older stars like Pujols and Cabrera have proven to be a disaster for teams. are all playing a part.

Taking a break from a great HS regional wrestling tournament. Mike Maddux is the biggest score imho in this offseason ...

I don’t understand MLB’s fixation on the thought they need to speed up the game? For the most part, the fans who watch baseball on TV regularly are the die hard fans, and the fans who pay money to go to the games want the experience to last as long as it can. Plus, if they shorten the games, that means less revenue, both stadium concessions and TV advertising revenue for the teams and the league.

Agreed. You want to shorten the game: get rid of replay. Also get rid of these stupid between inning fan games.

You may be right.

Thank you 2m. Lopez and Giolito already have the straight change from Maddux for the White Sox. Rookie flamethrower Kopech for the Sox can't stop talking about getting his straight change over. He'll be up before the All-Star break.

I'm glad to see young arms decreasing the amount of breaking stuff they throw. Curve balls got Steve Stone a Cy Young but ruined his arm.

St. Louis has the starting staff and the catcher, all who will be helped by Maddux, along with Matheny being helped by him. Their staff is way ahead of that of the Cubs and Brewers ...

I wish Giolito well, but the Nats were willing to let him go because they didn't think he would develop into much. We will see. They once let Robbie Ray go too.

Your second four starters are as good as half the major league teams first starting 4; your bullpen is still deep even without Albers; using a few 2nd line starters there makes sense to me;

You have depth in the outfield and infield; not catching. I'd unload the albatross Harper for say Y. Grandal, etc. before he walks next winter ...

I personally think Harper will stay. But if he doesn't Victor Robles will be ready.

You guys are loaded, except at catcher, crucial. I'm looking at Nats in SL early August, before my better half enters her last year of teaching. That part of STL is outstanding; hotels right next to the Busch experience. Also, Nats at MIL late July, behind Nats dugout of course. I met some good people from the DC area. They love it here, cheaper and that tailgate thing ...

Good for you. I agree that the area around the ball park in St. Louis is outstanding.

Yeah the Orioles are terrible with evaluating pitching talent, but other positions they do get right once in a while. Not re-signing Wieters was a great move. That guy is awful. Look for him soon at your nearest minor league ballpark!
