Susan Collins surpasses Mitch McConnell as the most unpopular senator in a new poll

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).

1/16/20
WASHINGTON – Republican Sen. Susan Collins has surpassed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as the most unpopular U.S. Senator, according to a new tracking poll. The Maine Senator's net approval rating has dropped 10 points since the end of September, leaving her with a 52 percent disapproval rating, a quarterly Morning Consult tracking poll found. The poll comes as Collins, one of the most moderate Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, faces a tough reelection campaign for what would be her fifth term. She was reelected in 2014 with nearly 70% of the vote, but Democrats see her as one of the more vulnerable Republican senators for 2020 where more GOP Senate seats are on the ballot than Democratic ones. The race is expected to be Maine's most expensive ever, with nonpartisan ad tracking firm Advertising Analytics projecting $55 million in overall spending. Her vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh particularly rankled Democrats but shored up support from Republicans from her state in 2018. A crowdfunding campaign aimed at her defeat was generated in response to her Kavanaugh vote and raised more than $4 million.

“All five of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans head into the trial with voters in their states either souring on their job performance or with perceptions of the president threatening to pull them further down,” Morning Consult said in a press release on the poll. Collins maintained her impartiality as the House impeached Trump, and is one of a few GOP Senators who hasn't been opposed to calling witnesses during the Senate trial. She has criticized Democrats in the Senate as well as McConnell for predetermining their votes on the pending impeachment trial and has reiterated how she views her role as an impartial juror seriously. She issued a statement Thursday saying that she would likely vote to hear new evidence and witnesses. McConnell came in second as the least popular senator with a disapproval rating of 50 percent and an approval rating of 37 percent..

Collins' yes votes for the 2017 Trump tax cuts for the wealthy and for SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh have probably pushed away the Democrat and liberal independents that have supported her in the past. Alternately, she may have lost Republican support by not voting for Trump in 2016 and for voting against the horrid GOP Senate healthcare bill. She could very well be political toast no matter how she votes in the upcoming impeachment trial.

It's no surprise that "Moscow" Mitch McConnell is the second most unpopular Senator with a disapproval rating of 50%. He is about to preside over a sham Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump and has allowed hundreds of bills passed by the Democrat controlled House to sit on his desk collecting dust, including three bills that would help protect the US from Russian interference in the 2020 election.

Rounding out the Unpopular Top Ten in descending order are; Joni Ernst, R-IA / Lisa Murkowski, R-AK / Martha McSally, R-AZ / Cory Gardner, R-CO / Deb Fischer, R-NE / Bob Menendez, D-NJ / Elizabeth Warren, D-MA / Rand Paul, R-KY.

She was exposed as not being the rational moderate that she claims to be.

Collins took more money from the billionaire behind Breitbart than from all of Maine

Yesterday, the Maine People’s Alliance called on Sen. Susan Collins to return thousands of dollars she received from Robert Mercer, the billionaire backer of Breitbart, the racist, misogynist and bigoted website proud to position itself as the “platform of the alt-right.”

Mainers for Accountable Leadership has launched a petition demanding the same.

Breitbart is known for spreading conspiracy theories and inciting xenophobic fear, with constant headlines attacking women, LGBT people and immigrants and a series of articles devoted to cataloguing “black crime.”

With at least 10 million dollars from Mercer funding its operations, the site was instrumental in radicalizing the Republican party and helping President Donald Trump rise to power. Breitbart executive chairman Steve Bannon became Trump’s chief strategist in the White House.

She's ****ed.

This exposing the fundamental flaw in our entire democracy. Better to be beloved by one side than to risk pissing off both. This dynamic must change. In the past before the internet and cable news it was possible for Politicians to play both sides and stay centered but in today's world being moderate and independent is a death sentence.

We must convert our elections to Ranked Choice voting. It will do a much better job of fostering compromise and working together. Candidates will have to avoid being hated by the other side rather than making that their primary goal.

These polls are stupid. But, it is kind of funny how one of the most moderate of Republicans gets strung by a noose from a tree by the lefty poll voters just for failing to come through for them.

She was playing an unsustainable, stupid game. How long do you think you're going to get away with being a rabid Trump supporter in a state that loathes Trump?

Hate and loathing in Bangor. Sad.

Trump supporters widely acknowledge that he trolls liberals on purpose. It's his appeal, in fact. What kind of reaction did you think he was going to get in response? Love and adulation?

It's probably a big deal in Maine.

There are no moderates in the Republican Party. Republicans had a chance to moderate their party in 2012. Instead, they bet it all on one last big score.

May she remain unpopular leading to the ultimate rebuttal in Nov.

The question is whether she's so deep into Trump cultism that she'll knowingly sacrifice Congressional power just to side with him. Statistically speaking, she will.

Great point. The JFK Dems & Rockefeller Republicans are gone. Leading the country by compromise to the middle, was historically the way to move the country forward. And generally, it worked and worked well.

Now, the word "compromise" is a sin. We'll cling to party & power, governing mainly by administration, appointments, and executive order. I suppose in the long run this gives Dems the edge with their growing demographic advantage. Power can only contain populace so long. But it seems like a helluva' ****ty way to govern, and is not good for the country.

Hell, more and more it seems we say "America" to each other. Are we afraid to say "United States"? "United" is now a bad word, too? Possibly. I never hear it much any more from politicos, or even my fellow DP'ers.

Agreed.

She really has no choice, in political terms. Unless the tide in her state turns against Trump so badly, that she switches parties. But it might be getting too late in the game to do it. But if she had to, this would be the perfect time to do it - and what a splash it would make!

Republicans are hoping that most people aren't paying attention and for those that are, they're going to use distraction. The anti-institutionalists are going to try to de-legitimize this process as much as possible to distract and come up with theories that this is Trump's inherent authority and that kind of thing. They're counting on the fact that most Americans aren't paying attention or engaged in all of this and for those that are Social media has put us all in a bubble and there's no central place where people can go and agree on a unified set of facts.

That's the game the republicans are playing. They're going to have a set of alternative facts and they're just going to put it out there and continue to disrespect this process by thumbing their noses at clear evidence that has come out in the past three weeks and just pretend that it's not important. It's not just impeachment on trial, it's the institution of the Senate that's on trial, it's our civics that are on trial, it's our separation of powers that's on trial. When the president of the US does something that they have to be held accountable for is this system of government going to be working anymore? People really cared about the how the government worked in 1974 and 1998 but what the Senate is doing right now is de-legitimizing the separation of powers that holds any president accountable, and it should be troubling to all patriots.

I don't get how she doesn't have a choice. Maine disapproves of Trump by twenty points. She ain't a Senator from Kentucky.

But in the long run it may not. Some polls are showing blacks support Trump at almost 35 percent and Hispanic support greater then Romney. If blacks support trump in the next election at 30 percent the democrat nominee cannot win.

You people keep screaming “demographics are destiny” (which is oddly racist) and assuming your coalition will last forever into the future.

I know many Latinos and virtually none are ideological liberals. And In Washington the democrats just tried to screw over the Asian community by passing racist legislation to keep them out of universities with racial quotas.

I think In the next couple elections a minority shift away from the democrats will be occurring

Perhaps she might be getting there, I don't know. But today, no one is going to win many voters from their opposing voters, so they cling to their base. And one wrong move, and Trump destroys them with their base.

As to her specifically, I'm not sure how welcoming the Dem voters would be of her. There already seems to be a viable Dem opponent who's gained traction. However a vote against Trump in the Senate, accompanied by an "I switch parties" cry, might give some thoughts to accept her. But I'm not sure that would work this late in the game, if at all. I'm not aware of switching parties leading up to an election as being statistically a successful move! Look at Jeff Van Drew (D-->R NJ).

Her moderate act has fallen apart. If she wants to be taken back into the fold of her constituency, she's going to have to do more than talk moderate while voting to protect Trump.

She’s been perfectly moderate. The moderate thing to do was approve Kavanaugh because the woman accusing him was a damned liar.

It’s unfortunate liberal voters in Maine May not see it that way, but doing the right thing may come with costs.

The votes for the tax bill or Kavs confirmation were meaningless though, not one single liberal leaning voter post 2016 would’ve given her any credit unless she came out full liberal idealogue and changed parties.
