Subjective Poll - Alice In Chains vs. Mountain

IMHO the better band is

They're kind of a cross between 80s hair bands and Grunge.
At least the time frame of them emerging.

Very good and underrated in my opinion.
Lead singer died and they replaced him, but it's not the same.

Yeah I was so bummed when Layne died, I couldn't even bring myself to buy their new albums after that.

True, but there are still glimmers of greatness thanks to Cantrell being a AWESOME guitarist/vocalist songwriter.

Cantrell is great, but there's something not there.
Layne had problems which made his expressions and passion real in his work.
Something I just don't see in modern "rock" bands.

Mountain.

I'm not sure why The Who is on the list and they generally don't have a question mark after their name.

It should be noted that Felix Pappilardi died in the early 80's so it's quite possible that many who respond to this poll weren't even born when Mountain was active.

More to your point, Mississippi Queen was released in 1970.

Vast majority of people do not know who Pappilardi was, but a much larger portion of people at least know Mississippi Queen.

Sure, but even though it wasnt part of my generation I still heard of bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zepellin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and all that. But the fact that this is the first time I ever heard of a band called Mountain speaks for itself. I would say about 1% of the world's population is aware of them.

No idea who either of these bands are.

You should listen to Alice in Chains, Gov. They were around when you were a kid, and then the lead singer died of an OD and they went on hiatus for awhile. As for the music: I don't recommend jumping right into their heavier stuff, because you could get turned off without becoming acquainted to how layne staley (vocalist) can make his voice sound haunting and beautiful. I recommend you start with the song 'No Excuses'. Then try out the rest of the songs in this thread.

Like I said, I bet far more people know the song "Mississippi Queen", but don't know that "Mountain" wrote it.

You have at least heard the song before. Right?

Yeah I might have heard a short tune of it once or twice during my life. But the fact that the band itself was never mentioned by anyone who wrote about the influences of rock and roll speaks for itself.

Just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they aren't near the top of the heap.

Ive done a lot of reading about bands and all that ever since I was a kid. Not once did I ever come across an article or a documentary about that band. And the fact that almost everyone on this forum hasnt heard of them either is proof positive they are an obscure, one hit wonder.

So as not to derail TD's thread on American Hard Rock Bands any further, lets bring it here.

Which band is "better"? Alice In Chains (AIC) or Mountain?

Please explain your thought process on the matter if you can.

We talking number of "chart hits"?
Amount of influence on future bands/music?
Longevity?
Who'll be most remembered 50 years from now?
Quality of musicians in band?
Crosses more generations?

Without hesitation I'm going with AIC.

#1) Mississippi Queen is without question a HUGE song on many levels. But that's Mountain's only big song.
In fact I'd bet most people who know the song, couldn't tell you the name of the band who did it.

#2) AIC has more hits. Man In the Box, Would, Down In A hole, Nutshell, Heaven Beside You, Rooster

#3) The combination of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrel are/were :( magical. Cantrel's guitar and vocal ability is awesome. Thier harmonies are phenomenal.
Grungy, dirty, yet catchy and great hooks. They can be quiet and beautiful, then instantly turn into aggressive and raunchy.

I think it's obvious AIC is far more well known and identifiable to far more people than Mountain.

So tell me - who do you think is "better"?

AIC, clearly and without a question.

BTW, I think, and I'm basing this on supposition, but, I think the band in your sig. named themselves after the AIC song, of the same name.

Yep. That's true.

I totally agree with the bolded part. However, FP and West were also great.

This is a personal taste thing for me. I think I have most of each band's recordings. I have likes and dislikes I could list about both bands. There's also the "era" factor.

I'm going with AIC on the strength of Jar of Flies being on my 'albums with all great songs' list, even though it's really just an EP.

Edit : Just wanted to add that the live recordings of Nantucket Sleighride are awesome. I listened to that way more than Mississippi Queen (which is great).

Mountain's bass player/singer Felix Pappalardi wrote a great song called My Lady. I can't listen to it anymore because the woman he's singing about shot and killed him.

Who? I never even heard of him.

Look man, I was a bass player for many years back from the late 70's through mid 90's.

I loved hard rock too. Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow.....and Rush was for sure my biggest love in terms of rock bass lines to emulate and play.

I'd never heard of Pappalardi until TD mentioned him.

When one thinks of the best rock bass players Pappalardi doesn't make the list.

Not when guys like Chris Squire, John Entwistle, and Geddy Lee are considered. Among plenty of others.

LOL, I grew up playing that stuff - but guitar. I was a kid when Mountain came out, so I got introduced. They didn't last all that long. I'm not sure why TD puts them so far up there. They were a really good band, but...

Geddy is nuts. Live (as I'm sure you're aware) he plays bass, Torus (sp?) pedals and keyboards all while doing the vocals. THAT is talent. I think I saw Rush 4 times.
