So as not to derail TD's thread on American Hard Rock Bands any further, lets bring it here.

Which band is "better"? Alice In Chains (AIC) or Mountain?

Please explain your thought process on the matter if you can.

We talking number of "chart hits"?
Amount of influence on future bands/music?
Longevity?
Who'll be most remembered 50 years from now?
Quality of musicians in band?
Crosses more generations?

Without hesitation I'm going with AIC.

#1) Mississippi Queen is without question a HUGE song on many levels. But that's Mountain's only big song.
In fact I'd bet most people who know the song, couldn't tell you the name of the band who did it.

#2) AIC has more hits. Man In the Box, Would, Down In A hole, Nutshell, Heaven Beside You, Rooster

#3) The combination of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrel are/were :( magical. Cantrel's guitar and vocal ability is awesome. Thier harmonies are phenomenal.
Grungy, dirty, yet catchy and great hooks. They can be quiet and beautiful, then instantly turn into aggressive and raunchy.

I think it's obvious AIC is far more well known and identifiable to far more people than Mountain.

So tell me - who do you think is "better"?

Clearly AIC.

I voted twice:

Who? for Mountain because I have no idea who the **** they are

AIC because, well, I like AIC (but I havent listened to any of their new stuff after Layne died).

Alice in Chains. Jerry Cantrell is a genius.
