Stockton Ca. experiments with Universal Income

U.S. city to experiment with ‘universal basic income’

Stockton to experiment with universal basic income.

The mayor of Stockton, California, is leading an experiment with “universal basic income,” which is set to start by giving low-income residents $500 a month, no questions asked.

Mayor Michael Tubbs calls his city “ground zero” for issues like wage stagnation, rising housing prices and loss of middle-class jobs that affect the nation.

Residents that are legally in the country? Or anyone living there?

I hope they carry out this pilot program to fruition so that we can learn from it.

It sounds interesting.

Road construction is paid for in a variety of ways, and I pay more taxes than you. So you owe me that money back, right?

Wrong, VERY wrong. No one owes you anything no matter how much you've paid.

From the OP article the Economic Security Project is donating $1,000,000. How far will that go at $6,000 per low income person.
$1,000,000 / $6,000 = 166.66 . So a 166 people can get $500/month for a year. The article does not state what low income is and does not state where the additional dollars are going to come from. The article did state that they project plans to track how the money is spent and how it helps the persons self esteem.

Great. So you agree then there's nothing wrong with the scenario where someone pays more taxes and some of that money goes to another.

Yeah, I read that also...but the way I read it is that was only one "source"...the article didn't say where any other monies would come from.

What do you mean by "take a portion" of debt? When a state borrows money, it doesn't magically become a debt owed by the federal government, no.

When states are in debt and lets say they have to increase their debt, they take out loans from the federal government. States dont often payback the loans from the federal government. Thus increasing the federal governmnets debts.

For over 30 years we have taken money out of the middle class pocket and been giving it to Super Rich with hopes of that money somehow can find its way magically back to the pocket of Middle and Lower Class. In return. The Rich got richer moved more of their money outside in the tax shelters while the middle-class wages was reduced and less money for infrastructure. To help solve this dilemma We decided to gave the rich more money, in return, they got richer moved more jobs out of the country and wages for the rest of went down even further and middle class got poorer.

So here is a thought! Let's Try something Different!!! Baring the idiotic the current Tax Reform plan of throwing 1.5Trillion dollars Free money at the rich(essentially Congress and White House gave themselves a 1.5 trillion dollar raise at the expense of middle class) and driving the national debt up throw the roof!

Are you seriously going to get pissy over semantics?
Its not semantics pointing out the idiocy of starting yet another government handout program and calling the handout 'income'. Its especially ludicrous that a city that has already declared bankruptcy thinks the solution is to create more crippled and dependent pets. Sure...the first million comes from a private grant. But what happens once the seed money runs out? Worse...what happens when the people have come to expect their new handout only to have it cancelled? And how do they select their 100 recipients...at random or by hand? I especially like their anticipated finding...where the recipients of their newfound 'wealth' "take time off from work to spend on other activities."

****ing brilliant. Giving people with jobs a handout anticipating they will use that handout to leave their jobs.

And where would this money come from?
The proposal is a test bed...they are going to hand pick 100 recipients for 3 years. Half of the initial funding will come from a private grant.

You must have been under rock in 2008 when we bough 2 trillion dollars golden parachutes. When Paulson testified before the congress, he was asked How is this money will be used: His Answer " I can't tell you" Question...Where this money will be used? His answer "I can't tell you that"

Question "to Whom this money will go to?" His Answer "I can't you that" . Congress: OK then.... Here is the money!

Republican and conservative has been on reverse robin hood run since 80's steal from middle Class and give to rich--Massive corporate welfare! They are just now more brazen about it, because now they have super pack money.

Nice little scame. Steal from American people give to the rich, the rich in turn make sure they are in the office to steal more.

Best Democracy money can buy...Of the Rich for the Rich, by the rich!

I guess that will help not only the regular economy by stimulating alcohol, cigarette, pot, and lottery sales but it will also stimulate the drug economy as well. Way to go!

Why give away money for free? Surely, there are roads that need cleaning, trash to be picked up, paving that could be done, public areas that need upkeep, etc. Unless the town of Stockton is perfect, every road brand new, every bit of concrete flawless, etc....why give money to able bodied people and get nothing in return?

The whole liberal spiel is give people money and remove all incentives to work.

Geeezus. The poor sad liberal "them republicans is steealin mah penniez!" routine is so ****ing pathetic. Liberal policies have destroyed poor people. You want to see who is responsible foryour failure go grab a nice family group picture. Or better yet...just go look in a mirror.

Can you provide an example of a state defaulting on such a loan?
