A record 70 percent of Russians approve of Soviet leader Josef Stalin’s role in "Russian" history, according to a poll published by the independent Levada Center pollster on Tuesday.

Stalin’s image has been gradually rehabilitated in the 2000s from that of a bloody autocrat to an “outstanding leader.” President Vladimir Putin has revived the Soviet anthem, Soviet-style military parades and a Soviet-era medal for labor during his presidency.

I had the great misfortune to live in Moscow back in the early 1990s.

It blew me away when I saw older people marching in the streets all carrying photographs of Stalin, wanting a reintroduction of his policies.

I see things haven't changes all that much.

koba´s icon in the Muscovite " church ",

Stalin betrayed the Revolution and the people. He was a petty tyrant who should be relegated to the dustbin of Russian history.

do you think Ulyanov was better ?

Only bad things happen when people forget history.

Today the Communist Party is second only to Putin's United Russia Party.

It is my understanding that Leon Trotsky was named as the successor to Lenin.

no never, a Jew has always had 0 chance to become a czar . Koba was Lenin´s official successor . and Trotsky was very unpopular figure in Politburo

That ignores Lenins wishes and the position of Trotsky at the time of Lenins death.

its a myth , Lenin gave all the most important imperial positions to koba, and Kotkin is very clear on this . "Lenins will " is controversial subject ...

I am going by information from a grad class on the Russian Revolution. The prof said Trotsky was the heir of Lenin.

Now this was back in the mid 70's so that may have changed.
