This is a topic that doesn’t get enough attention, how animal “rights” extremists have taken over local animal shelters which are taxpayer funded and used them as platforms to advance agendas like “no kill” policies which directly lead to often fatal harm to the public. This isn’t the first time this has happened, but it’s a pretty interesting case.

From the excellent website dogsbite.org we get the story

Basically this 2 year old male pitbull was taken into Spokane county animal rescue, no information about why the animal ended up in the shelter has been provided to journalists or seemingly to the family who adopted the dog, and within 3 months, December of 2023, the pit bull fatally attacks the family’s 4 year old boy.

This is of course no surprise because these types of attacks against children and the elderly/infirm by pit bulls adopted as “pets” occur multiple times every year. Resulting in deaths or disfigurement. Less then four months before Colton Kline was killed by the pitbull Spokane adopted an ordinance banning the animal rescue from euthanizing dangerous animals

Unfortunately no one was at the council to advocate for children like Colton Kline, only his killer is worthy of representation in the city of Spokane

It’s way past time responsible legislators start cracking down on animal shelters. No kill policies should be illegal and pit bulls should be presumed dangerous and euthanized when admitted to shelters. At the very least anyone thinking of adopting a pit bull should be entitled to written warnings from the shelters explaining these dogs are dangerous, kill more people then all other breeds combined, and have such a strong jaw lock that you can’t get them off their victims. One report of the attack shows the child’s grandmother actually repeatedly sliced this dog with a knife including in the throat and it still came back to continue the attack. People don’t know what they’re getting into with these animals and shelters need to start being held accountable

Seems to me the problem here isn't the dog, but the lack of historical record-keeping of the dog and it's previous history.

Pit bulls are not by nature "evil." No dog is. Pit bulls are strong, have one of the strongest bites, etc., but every dog, regardless its size is capable of inflicting injury on another being.

It's all a function of how they were trained and raised - hence the need for shelters in particular to have and keep as accurate a set of historical records they can. Unfortunately, this can be quite difficult, for a variety of reasons. Given that, it is then incumbent on those adopting these dogs - any dog - to do their homework, and do it thoroughly to know if the dog matches your lifestyle and etc. Not every breed is suitable for everyone; you NEED to do your homework for personality, training, temperament, sociability, etc. and make sure they match your lifestyle - and family. Pit bulls get a horrifically bad rap because of the widespread ignorance of this one, key fact.

In general, humans are the problem, not the dog.

Yeah a four year old deserves the death penalty for triggering a pit bull. Got it

This type of nonsense is why Kids get killed by dogs.

The problem is the dog. This is an aggressive dog specifically bred for to the death fighting. They are bred for aggressiveness, strong bite and hold, and tolerance to pain

No one said a pit bull is “evil” evil requires moral understanding which dogs do not possess
It's all a function of how they were trained and raised
There is numerous families who’ve lost loved ones to purportedly “trained” pit bulls

The pit bulls is suitable for no one. Bull baiting and dog fighting are criminal offenses in the United States and that’s all these dogs were bred for

Pit bulls get a bad rap because they are uniquely dangerous amongst dogs. This is why they fill up shelters

Pit bulls are, by nature, unpredictable...no matter how well they are trained. They can seem like the sweetest, most lovable dog on earth...and then they can rip your five year old daughter's throat out.

You should start treating those burns my friend, they've gotta be painful. ☮️

Sick. Not surprised you hate dogs, guessing the feeling is mutual.

Your ignorance of the breed is noted.

Neither do some humans, as you make so painfully obvious.

More ignorance. Where do you get your information from? How much time have you spent at your local shelter actually getting to know the facts about the breed?
They just seem to be another easy 'target' for you to attack from behind the anonymity afforded by this forum. What a sad way to spend one's latter years.:(

American Pit Bull Terrier
The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. Because most APBTs exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog. The breed’s natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.

Yeah Colton Kline was just snuggled to death by Pibbie!

Let’s go with that.

I presented several posts with reasoned argument and your response is pseudo Eastern philosophy and a picture? Lol ok

I hate it when kids get mauled by dangerous animals because the adults around them, including the local government in this case failed to take reasonable action to protect them

I had a pit bull, actually two, as next door neighbors. One was very friendly, and became best buddies with my lab-coyote cross. One day, it got into a fight with its pit bull "roomie" and killed it. The most important difference between a pit and most dogs is: With the average dog, if you provoke it sufficiently, it will give you a chomp, and then back off and give you a look like "let that be a warning to you". With a pit, the initial chomp will be followed by chomp-chomp-chomp. This trait has been bred into them by the savages who like to watch dogs fight to the death. The dogs didn't ask for this, and aren't morally responsible for the results. However these results are forseeable, and likely. At the very least, all pits should be spayed or neutered. Animal shelters should euthanize those turned in, as they have no way to determine background, breeding, and past behavior; and the risks to the public are too great.

iirc,
not even veterinarians can reliably identify which dogs are or are not pit bulls by looking at them
Any data which relies on lay people identifying dogs by sight is doubly sus
imho
ymmv

The family who adopted the dog should bear at least some responsibility for their decisions

I was actually referring to the first owners. But yes, 4 year olds have been mauled and worse because of their interactions with the family dog.

This should not have been a family dog. He should’ve been forced across the rainbow bridge long before this happened

The fact is pit bulls are simply too big and strong to be good pets. Yes if you raise and train them right there are few issues just like if you raise and train a tiger right there are few issues. But people know darn well that a tiger isn’t a good pet, pit bulls aren’t good pets either.

Fascinating evidence of your thought process here.

@mrjurrs said "humans"
But your mind went immediately to holding the dead child responsible
instead of the adult humans who made the decisions and took the actions
and who were responsible for the child's well-being.

Why is that?

Why would you decide that the human most likely responsible for the situation was the dead toddler?

Instead of the parents?

wtf is in your head here?

Like St Bernards, Great Danes, Mastiffs and all of the whole horde of various other large ass dogs?

There are certain dog breeds that are more dangerous than others
I own and manage a doggie daycare boarding facility, at least until Jan 30th when the title changes hands to the new owner, as my wife and I are selling and retiring.

I have seen and been around thousands of dogs....including pits, rotties, shepards, etc
We do assessments on EVERY dog that comes to our facility to make sure that dog is worthy of being in a pack....worthy of being put in situations around lots of other animals and people. We get rescues all the time where there is NO HISTORY. Family adopted from a shelter who had the dog for a short amount of time, and so it is hit or miss or what the history of the dog was like.

Was it abused? Mistreated? Left alone outside for days at a time? DId it ever get socialized with other dogs? No one has these answers a lot of the time. Our job is to figure out if the dog is okay, and a dog not only okay for daycare, but for the family. Our trainer works with these dogs on a one on one basis, and in small groups...and sometimes we just cant get the dog to where we need it to be.

If you rescue a dog, and dont take it to a facility like mine, or at least a trainer, you are imo playing with fire. All dogs can be dangerous. Some of course, more than others, but that is why you have professionals work with them to make sure everything is okay.

If you raise a pit bull to be a labrador, they will just be a more muscular labrador. But thats the key. Like any big dog they have to be raised properly. Too many people have and raise them like they are the owner's canine viagra.

Also they need to be spayed/neutered. Male dogs will try to get out, and big male dogs running loose is a danger.

These dogs are not bread for bloodsport in the matter pit bulls were and are responsible for next to no deaths of children

tbf,
those were not the reasons offered by the person I was responding to.
I was asking about the attributes they provided in their argument.

You are raising a whole new argument.

Are any other dogs which are not Pit Bulls okay if they are raised for "blood sport"?

Are only pit bulls bad when they are raised for "blood sport"?

Yes because pit bulls are the most dangerous dogs for families bar none. The next most dangerous dog, the Rottweiler, is only a third as dangerous despite being bigger and bred as an attack/guard dog

Which question are you answering with your, "Yes"?

If veterinarians have trouble telling which dogs are pit bulls by looking at them,
how can you feel confident that the data collected about dogs accurately reflects actual pit bulls?

If a journalist had trouble telling who was or was not a Trump supporter presented you with a bunch of information about Trump supporters,
would you feel those data were reliable?
