Spike in virus cases not driven by protests, experts say

Spike in virus cases not driven by protests, experts say

There is little evidence that the protests that erupted after George Floyd’s death caused a significant increase in United States coronavirus infections, according to public health experts. If the protests had driven an explosion in cases, experts say, the jumps would have started to become apparent within two weeks – and perhaps as early as five days. But that didn’t happen in many cities with the largest protests, including New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.

In what’s considered the first systematic look at the question, a team of economists determined that only one of 13 cities involved in the earliest wave of protests after Memorial Day had an increase that would fit the pattern.

It was Phoenix, where experts say cases and hospitalizations surged after a decision by Gov. Doug Ducey to end Arizona’s stay-at-home order on May 15 and eased restrictions on businesses. Arizona residents who were cooped up for six weeks flooded Phoenix-area bar districts, ignoring social distancing guidelines.

In many cities, the protests actually seemed to lead to a net increase in social distancing, as more people who did not protest decided to stay off the streets, said that study’s lead author, Dhaval Dave of Bentley University.

COMMENT:-

Yet another loony, leftist, socialist, liberal, pinko, commie lying so-called "news" site?

Not entirely surprising. Most of the people I saw in those protests were wearing masks.

......there have been hundreds of peaceful protests and you point out the non protest?
They were there protesting. That evil little girl interfered with their evil protest and put those poor aggrieved citizens of having to shoot her. That little girl was part of the problem and those peaceful protesters are the solution. Stay out of their way while they do the heavy lifting for society.

From the photos, most of the people at the protests were from the "MUCH less at risk of catching COVID-19" category as well.

Mind you, the people who are "organizing" those protests most certainly appear to need to bring in some outside assistance in "crowd management" and "odd-ball deterrence". Unfortunately most of the folks from the 60s who do have the experience in those things are NOT in the "MUCH less at risk of catching COVID-19" category.

Hopefully "US$10,000 reward offered in Atlanta killing of 8-year-old girl" (from CTV News) will have some effect.

On the other hand, there IS a predilection for members of one demographic NOT to "rat out" other members of the same demographic so I'm not as hopeful that it will do any good as I would be if the reward were $20,000 (or $40,000 [or $80,000 {or $160,000 <or $320,000 -or $640,000 |or $1,280,000|->}]).

According to the media, the rioters are peaceful heros creating needed social reforms. Why would you expect anyone to look for themlet alone turn them in

Which has something to do with

Yet for some miraculous reason the protests are immune to thst infallible logic. Go figure. A more jaded person might think theses opinions were tainted by politics.

Yes , it is amazing or miraculous if you which to use that word that the protests did not cause a spike in Covid 19 cases.

I’m telling you I was amazed that Michigan did not experience a spike from Covid 19 cases after the shut down state capital protests or the BLM protests.

That’s one reason I read everything I can about why we did not have a big spike in cases.

The studies essentially said that being outside with masks on helped slow the spread of Covid of Covid 19.

Here is a snip from just 1 article I read:

Shaman said that he and his team at Columbia modeled the demonstrations as they were occurring, to see whether they could lead to a surge in COVID-19 infections.

They ran their model through three scenarios, each with a different premise on how much masks and the open air would suppress transmission of the virus. In the scenario of lowest suppression, there should have been a substantial bump of cases by now, nearly three weeks after the protests began. In the medium scenario, there should have been a slightly lower bump.

In the scenario where masks and open air suppressed the transmission to the greatest degree, there was no bump. “That’s what we’re actually seeing,” Shaman said. “The most optimistic scenario turned out to be most accurate.”

It doesn’t look like the George Floyd protests are causing a COVID-19 spike.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when I read their reasoning.

Second it’s mostly spread during large gatherings where masks are not usually worn, like bars and restaurants.

Michigan recently had an outbreak of 174 people that was traced back to a restaurant/ bar in East Lansing Michigan.

Health Officer: 174-case Harper’s outbreak ‘tapering’ off in East Lansing

WEDNESDAY, July 8 — Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail said the recent coronavirus outbreak at Harper’s Restaurant and Bar in East Lansing has probably reached its conclusion.

“It does seem that we are declining in new cases,” Vail explained at a weekly virtual press briefing with reporters earlier this afternoon. “The last exposure would’ve been on June 20. In general, I would say we’re probably getting to a tapering period with secondary cases as well.”

After an uptick in confirmed coronavirus cases was first tied to the bar’s reopening and subsequent closure last month, county officials have tracked a total of 174 cases to date. Vail said 141 of those cases are patrons or staff and at least 33 are from contacts of those patients.

And weeks later, with the East Lansing watering hole still shuttered, that particular outbreak appears to have done its worst, Vail said in response to questions from reporters on the topic.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! That's hysterical. Then they are telling you that being elbow to elbow, yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs, emitting their germs, and touching each other and all types of surfaces will not effect you. That means the virus is a complete hoax. Let's go back to work, business as usual.

Make sure you are outside and Everyone is wearing a mask and you are not touching all types of sefaces or you may get Covid 19 like the 174 people who contracted in June in the East Lansing bar /Restaurant Mentioned in the above article.

Unfortunately your ISP scrambled your response and it ended up being unintelligible. Oh, there were words in it, and those words were English words, but someone sucked all meaning out of the post. You should investigate to see who is trampling on your First Amendment rights by turning your posts into unintelligible babble.

So, just as I thought, the lockdowns were never necessary.

Hindsight bias.

The lockdowns were needed to buy us time to stop the spread of this dangerous disease while scientists raced to understand it. Countries such as Germany, Norway, Finland, South Korea, and especially New Zealand used that critical time to put the virus on the defensive and educate their teachable citizens about best practices going forward.

But the United States is infested with a Rethuglican president and governors who couldn't give a flying **** if tens of thousands of their citizens die. And now those states are even worse than they were in early April, with no end in sight.

Cool story, bro. Three states account for 42% of Covid deaths. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

I had no idea they had Repub governors.

And here comes X Factor with his latest Dunning-Kruger.

Remind me how well Texas is doing right now with their covidiotic governor? ;)

We’re doing great. The large majority of people here don’t have it and of those who have had it, most recovered from it.

Indeed, Texas is doing better than New York - right now.

The mortality rate for closed cases in Texas is ~2.5% while the mortality rate for closed cases in New York is ~8.5%.

What tomorrow will bring I simply cannot say, but I do recall someone once (or more often, for that matter) saying "It's better to be safe than sorry.".
