SpaceX Hid a Second, Secret Payload Aboard Falcon Heavy

The space Tesla is not on a trajectory to descend and burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

My apology, you are correct i was under a misunderstanding. But as far as i am concerned that makes it even worse. Just what we need, not happy with polluting the earth we now start trashing the universe.

Uh.. The orbit it in the solar system, not planetary. It did go further than the orbit of mars, so it overshot it's target, but the orbit might start decaying after a few million years.

How long does plastic last in rubbish tips or the ocean? Now we start dumping crap on space to last a million years, wonderful makes me proud to be a part of the human race.

An alien space ship cruising the universe, minding their own business will detect said "tiny object traveling at great speed" long before evasive maneuvers need to be engaged. After all, if it's capable of "cruising the universe" (interstellar travel, yes?) I find it tough to believe that they'd miss Musk's payload.
And, one does not "cruise the universe" with the objective of "minding one's own business"...that'd be my guess anyway.

It was an allegory not a prediction.

Your changing the subject on what i considered stupid.
I said they were sending out a probe loaded with information about earth. You said it was stored in the car which is destined to re enter the atmosphere and burn. Stupid place to store something that is intended to travel through space then.

It isn't going to re-enter earth's orbit. Maybe Jupiter's, but that may be millions of years.

Even if we sent 100% of the earth's mass out into space it would be just a tiny pinprick. The universe is big. Really big.

Besides, Earth will be swallowed up by the sun when it is in its death throes and expands. Then it will shrink.

So....there's some more room for ya.

I believe the universe is teeming with life. But intelligent life could be a bit more problematic.

The famous Fermi Paradox comes to mind ... "Where is everybody [extraterrestrial life]?"

A long, long, long way away in space and time.

LOL! The universe is a pretty big place, and one car isn't going to "trash" it.

Plastic pollutes our seas and landfills for thousands of years. And now we find way of leaving our garbage hanging around for millions. Our accomplishments are so worthy of praise.

Yeah, that's what some one says when he throws one plastic bag on the ground. Earths a big place what can it matter?

This is where it starts if we congratulate one who throws rubbish into the sky why would the next person care either or the next.

When the sun dies, it will expand out past the orbit of Mars. Everything will be recycled into the sun.

I don't think you understand how much space is in space.

It is not a matter of how much space there is. It is a matter of not polluting it with crap. I do not care to see anyone throw garbage into the sea saying nature will recycle it or it's a big ocean it can handle it. I see no reason to make an exception for space.

Is this not the weirdest thing? Private enterprise seems obsessed with the idea of filling space with even more junk.

NZ's own rocket industry successfully launched what has been dubbed the " disco glitter ball" that serves no purpose but to strobe brightly. And your own american private company launches a car.

Is it not bad enough that we pollute our own planet but now business wants to pollute space as well.

Imagine in a million years some alien space ship cruising the universe minding their own business when a tiny object travelling at great speed crashes through their ship killing who knows how many aliens.

Yeah, they are going to be really happy with all that information on that bit of space junk.

:aliens3:

You worry too much about inconsequential things.

Tell me please, you id not take the suggestion of such an event as being a serious one?

The suggestion of a hypothetical alien craft being damaged by Musk's payload?
Not in the slightest. It's an absurd suggestion, and I believe I already explained why I believed it to be absurd.

I am aware this is not world shattering news or that lives are not at stake but still that is not a good reason to say nothing about it. Are you suggesting a philosophy of wait till it is a problem before doing anything about it?

Do i care? It was an allegory, use it as such instead of trying to pretend it was a factual statement.

The facts if you wish to know them is that littering is morally repugnant. And an excuse that space is big enough is simply nothing but a poor excuse for laziness and careless attitude.

Again, we could take the entire contents of our planet and launch it into space, and it would be a microscopic dot compared to the vastness of the universe.

What is the difference between the Tesla in space or the alternative, launching a mass of concrete?

Nor would that matter. The problem is that we already allow business to trash our planet with garbage. Now you want to let them do the same to space.

It is not what is sent into space, it is what happens to it. At least the nz rocket launchers had the good taste and consideration to make sure their junk had a planned reentry and would not clutter space with rubbish. American business however seem to give no consideration to anything but their own greed.

You do know that the company that launched the rocket in New Zealand (Rocket Lab) is an American company?

You call it litter. Your hypothetical space-faring alien civilization would call it anything but, especially the tiny data disc that Musk put in the glove box of the car. The fact is, Musk's amusing test payload will be a perfectly preserved piece of ephemera from the human race, something which is capable of informing another civilization about much of our present day existence.
For better or worse, it's a roadmap and an archaelogical find, which may or may not be a key to our redemption or destruction, depending on the whim of whoever finds it.

But it's anything but "litter", because litter is a term which describes an object which has a direct environmental impact on our Earth.

Yes, so what? You do realise i am arguing about industries that pollute without care and not about which country does it.

No, litter is throwing things away without concern for the environment. Space is also an environment.
