On the CBS Evening News a few minutes ago, they
reported that last year 6500 pedestrians and cyclist were killed by inattentive drivers. Some were drunk drivers, but most deaths can be laid at the door step of cell phones.

It is time to load software on all cell phones so they go dead if moving faster than 10 miles per hour!!!!! This is easily done since they all have a GPS chip.

Finding out what Sally is wearing today or if Bill is going to stop for a beer after work, is not worth 6500 lives. If cell phones shut off if moving more than 10 mph will raise a huge storm from especially the younger crowd. They need to be reminded that there was useful life before cell phones.

The first big whine is what about people riding in cars. If a phone call is that important, pull over and make it, and then move on!!!!!!

What say you????

I can turn off my work phone and have an excuse!

My car was totaled by a person texting. Thank God I got out in one piece. But you know those I hate government regulations people won’t go for it.

I say you have a most excellent idea ! Make them shut off over 10 MPH Good, I like it : )

It's irrelevant to ME. I despise cell phones for personal reasons & refuse to own one.

Every time I go somewhere, I see people driving down the road blabbing on their moron box...even though it's "against the law"

I'll never forget last summer, I saw a guy driving with his phone stuck between his shoulder & ear and he was ALSO eating a burrito !! Funny, I laughed but my God people are stupid with these things LOL

It may be best to leave the phone available for assisting navigation, playing music and able to record video/audio. Disabling only voice and text data transmission while traveling at speed may be a better alternative. Even that may cause problems for passengers in a moving vehicle.

Holy ****. I did wake up in opposite world. A valid thread!

I prefer drunk drivers to texting drivers. The drunks are at least trying not to get pulled over, wreck themselves, or kill someone else. Not very well, but still, they try. Texters don't even look at the road.

(And believe it or not, talking on the phone - headset or not - still splits your attention rather more significantly than you might expect. You just don't notice because, duh, of course you don't).

This is one of the few areas where I'm pretty much "tough on crime." We're way too lax on inattentive and/or ****ed up drivers. To me they are in a number of ways worse than someone who has committed first degree murder. The latter has a target they intend to kill and they do it (in general). The former? They do not care whether or not they kill anyone or who it is: they just HAVE to respond when the phone beeps.

Not caring who you kill seems worse than making sure you kill the one person you intended.

I think the most likely thing to happen - and this will make a lot of dimwits mad, but it's their own fault - is that AFTER we've had enough people killed by dimwits driving while texting, blabbing, whatever, auto manufacturers will be required by law to install cell phone signal jammers into all autos.

I think a LOT more people have to die yet, so enjoy the slaughter I guess. Can't outlaw stupid.

That would be fine. Just no phone call or text messages.

I say passengers may object to having a paperweight instead of a phone while its moving.

I would say the 10 MPH rule wont work. What will stop a distracted driver form making a turn into oncoming traffic while doing 6 MPH. I have always said that cell phones need to be inhibited while driving. A better idea would be something built into the car that triggers the phone when the car is put into gear. To hell with the passengers that complain. They can walk.

Kind of what I was suggesting might eventually happen in #7 on previous page

Something needs to be done, I agree. However, look at the huge telecom lobby. Big money buys Congress, and state legislators as well. As long as the money continues to flow and special all expenses paid for trips to "conferences" in 5-star at national and international resorts, and untraceable wads of "walking around money" slipped to politicos and staff don't even dream of meaningful life saving legislation.

I wish we could go back to the flip phones. It's what I use still, because I don't want to pay an expensive cell phone bill each month and I don't care how "lame" I look.

Heck I remember a regular car phone in my grandfathers late 80s to early 90s Mercedes. You couldn't remove them, they were installed to the car.

In some areas (Southern California leaps to mind,) police can't be bothered to effectively patrol for basic traffic violations.

Things that would get a person pulled over all day, every day in the Midwest are ignored. It creates an environment where people are rewarded for bad, genuinely dangerous driving, and they don't even know it.

My point being that we need to enforce the basics before we start targeting phones. There's plenty of overlap there, in any case.

What's to stop me from turning my GPS off when I'm in the car? I'll still be able to talk with my phone in my hand while driving.

Anyway, I find it easier to talk hands-free. I have an older car, but I also have a device that connects to my phone with bluetooth and connects to my radio with an FM transmitter. This allows me to make and receive calls without touching my phone...and my phone is usually on the dash showing me my route with Google Maps. The whole thing is voice controlled.

....it's not the cell phones killing people. They're not designed to kill and they're not being used for the purpose of killing. In that case, it's the person who kills people - the person who is derping into their phone at 40mph.

And yes, I'm putting it that way for an obvious reason (avoiding straw man distractions).

IMO, if you are texting and driving and harm or kill someone...jail time. And if you kill someone...life in jail.

And for parents of minors that do so, the jail time is for them. Kids should have software disabling texting while driving. If not, blame the parents, hold them responsible.

Excellent, unfortunate point.

Why not just make the cars' alarms go off if there is a cellphone in use to alert everybody else of the danger

Riding in cars, riding on buses, trains, don't think it can happen.
I'd do fines, points, and confiscate the phone for a week or two. Right there, roadside, first offense. The person would be complaining to anyone who would listen for the duration of the confiscation, scaring other phone addicts all around him.

Strong medicine is what it is going to take.

When driving laws concerning cell phones came into place people were very careful with using the phone.
Now things have gone lax and people don't even try to hide it they are using a cell phone. How many times do you see that moron with his or her's head cocked over to their shoulder trying to keep the cell phone next to their ear.

We use to call speed traps as something that the police would use to build up their monies. It seems to me that we should have cell phone traps to nail these idiots.

Strong punishment is the only way you are going to change things.

It isn't going to happen but damn it made me laugh. That is the funniest thing I have read today. I just picture some clown trying to talk on his cell phone with his horn blasting...…….. oh my
