More a joke in my time than a serious actor, but maybe you older members were fans

Kirk Douglas, legendary Hollywood tough guy, dead at 103

Kirk Douglas, known as one of the most beloved tough guys in Hollywood history on screen and a defender of blacklisted artists off screen, died Wednesday at age 103.

Edit: maybe I was thinking of Charlton Heston when I said more a joke in my time. Get them confused.

Kirk Douglas was great in his time. When paired with Burt Lancaster, the chemistry was there. Mike Douglas is 75; can’t imagine there still being a parent alive at that age.

Rest in peace Kirk. I remember as a young kid, my mother taking me to see Spartacus.

Sad, but we must all travel that path one day.

Still, I liked his movies. Spartacus was one of his most famous and among my favorites.

Now HE was Spartacus.

What a full life he had.

I raise my glass in appreciation.

From the OP link:

"I've known Kirk Douglas personally and appreciate his friendship," President Jimmy Carter said while awarding Douglas the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 1981. "But more than that, I have known how dedicated he is to using his talent as an actor and a director and the esteem with which he's held by his own people in spreading the good news about this country and explaining our purposes, our ideals, our commitments, and our achievements, our hopes, and our dreams to people around the world."

The progressive values of Douglas may been the product of his upbringing, as the poor child of Jewish immigrants from what's now Belarus — his birth name was Issur Danielovitch — who grew up in Amsterdam, New York.

After cutting his teeth as a stage actor and scoring strong supporting roles in classic films like "Out of the Past," Douglas would eventually emerge as a star in his own right with the 1949 boxing drama "Champion," for which he earned the first of three Best Actor Academy Award nominations. (He would eventually take home a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1996).

Kirk Douglas, as an actor, definitely left a lasting impression on me! He lived to 103; wow! I tip my hat to his impressive legacy... and offer condolences to his family, his friends, his fans and to all who loved him. Kirk Douglas had an amazing career!

I am watching, Paris is Burning with Kirk in it as Gen. George S. Patton jr.

First time I ever saw him in a movie.

Rest in peace, Kirk Douglas.

I Googled his best movies to refresh my memory (yeah, it ain't what it used to be).

On a quick scan, my top 5 Kirk Douglas movies (excluding the aforementioned Spartacus) :
Paths of Glory
Seven Days in May
Gunfight at the OK Corral
20,000 Leagues under the Sea
The War Wagon

Always sad to see a good actor depart. He entertained so many people over a long career and he had a wide range of ability. From his first movie role in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), his talent as a screen actor was obvious. After that he could play villains and heroes. His voice had a unique quality and his presence was scene stealing. He was a star in many great movies and his casting made them better every time. When I saw him in Lonely Are the Brave (1962) I became a fan.

Kirk Douglas was not one of my favorites as a kid, but Spartacus was a good movie. I wasn't a fan of Heston much either except for Ben Hur. Both of them have cold hands now. Grab the gun and sword quick!

"I'll give you my sword/gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands"

A 103 is a long, long time to live. I just can't imagine all the aches and pains you feel at 103. Am 68 and seems like there is always one part with a little ache to it.

I'm a big fan. As a kid I thought he was hilarious in twenty thousand leagues under the sea. As a testament to his character, see how he is portrayed in the movie Trumbo.

Am anti-cig as anyone but love this clip of Kirk.

RIP, Mr. Douglas. Loved your movies, especially Spartacus and Paths of Glory.

Even when the movie was a stinker, like The Fury or Saturn 3, Kirk was always mesmerizing, giving his all to every performance, never forgetting doing his best to entertain, and when possible, improving the human condition with a message. Honor him, he was a warrior of the soul with a sense of humor.

My mother passed in 1999. Whenever a screen personality of her generation would pass, she would remark, “ we have lost another one.” She was actually eight years Kirk’s junior. Many younger people are probably not all that familiar with Kirk’s son, Mike’s work.

A major loss for sure. RIP Kirk.

R.I.P. Not many actors alive now, born during WWI...

Kirk Douglas was great in the amazing WWI film PATHS OF GLORY - maybe the best war film ever made with certainly the best ending. His turn in THE VIKINGS was tremendous.

He had a great life and career.

Spartacus, Seven Days In May, and Town Without Pity (Gene Pitney sang this "Best Motion Picture Song" 1961) are a few of my favorites starring this Hollywood icon.

RIP Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas was a legend. He was one of the best.
