Rex Tillerson may be gone, but he hasn't forgotten. Speaking to soon-to-be graduates of the Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday, Tillerson dropped this truth bomb:

"If our leaders seek to conceal the truth, or we as people become accepting of alternative realities that are no longer grounded in facts, then we as American citizens are on a pathway to relinquishing our freedom."​

Woof. Double woof. You may remember that Tillerson was removed as Secretary of State by President Donald Trump after a remarkably tempestuous year in office -- a period of time during which relations between the two men grew badly strained. Things were never really the same after reports surfaced last fall that Tillerson had called Trump a "moron" in a Pentagon meeting in the summer of 2017. Then there was the time when Tillerson directly refused to provide Trump cover following the President's "both sides" comments about the white nationalist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. "The President speaks for himself," Tillerson remarked at the time. Now. Tillerson and his people will helpfully note that he never mentioned Trump's name in the speech, and that the address was meant as a broad call to fight for truth rather than a narrowly cast shot at the President of the United States. Don't believe them. Tillerson is no dummy. He knew what he was doing. The use of the phrase "alternative realities" is no accident. Neither are these lines from the Tillerson speech:

"A responsibility of every American citizen to each other is to preserve and protect our freedom by recognizing what truth is and is not, what a fact is and is not and begin by holding ourselves accountable to truthfulness and demand our pursuit of America's future be fact-based -- not based on wishful thinking, not hoped-for outcomes made in shallow promises, but with a clear-eyed view of the facts as they are, and guided by the truth that will set us free to seek solutions to our most daunting challenges."​

It is impossible to read that paragraph and not have the image of Donald Trump conjured up in your mind. Im-possible. That's just want Tillerson wanted -- and yet more proof that revenge is a dish best served cold.

Although I applaud Mr. Tillerson's newfound courage, I have to ask why he kept his true assessment of Trump a secret while in office and settled on being an enabler.

True to a point. There was Kelly, Matthis and Kelly trying to keep Trump from a possible war with NK.
I think he stayed to try and maintain a triumvirate trying to keep things tamped down and some measure of sanity.
If he resigned, people would have congratulated him, they would also mention the above point as well and that he one upped Trump by resigning

While I agree with you, I have found that there are people who are ultimate establishment insiders and can only run on the inside rail from a position of great strength. Tillerson is one of those people.

To expect a great act of James Dean rebellion from folks like that is something that is simply not in their nature.

True, and a reflection on his character, and while he may be willing to speak out now one must remember that he was in league with the Devil for a while, there is that taint to the reputation of anyone that goes down that path, I don't believe it washes off easily.

Almost every person that has or will go to work for Donald Trump surrenders their reputation. They leave much dirtier than they ever entered the job. They leave covered in crude, like a duck in oil spill.....

It is highly unlikely that he was speaking of Trump specifically but certainly the so-called journalists could be counted on to try to use this speech to sell their anti current President of the United States agenda rather than taking it as a broadside upon the FAILED INTELLIGENTSIA!.

It may be that I don't fully understand "trolling" (other than as a thing boaters/fishermen do), but Rex's remarks don't strike me as trolling. It strikes me as the words of a regular American citizen speaking truth to power.

Truly, I was surprised when Tillerson accepted a role in the Trump Admin. because he's so many things Trump is not, such as

• Capable leader of a publicly held corporation --> When I hear the saying "we want a man who understands business in the WH," someone like Tillerson, or another public firm's CEO, COO, CFO, EVP, VP, MP, etc., is the sort of person I have in mind. Someone who's got a demonstrated track record of leading via collaboration, business-case-based decision making, and earned their prominence as a result of something other than forming a cult of personality.
• Literally a Boy Scout --> He earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
• Has a basis for having empathy with other regular people --> At various periods, the man picked cotton, worked as a janitor and worked as a busboy.
• Is actually adept with coherent, logical thinking and problem solving; in other other words he is smart and a capable learner --> The man has a U.T. Austin degree in civil engineering

Don't get me wrong. Many Americans would feel compelled by a sense of patriotism and duty to answer the call of a sitting POTUS and serve if asked. That pair of sensibilities would impel many to acquiesce to a call from even the likes of a reprobate POTUS like Trump. That said, when working with degenerates, one can no longer deny that one's optimism was misplaced. I think many of the nation's best minds and most talented individuals have learned vicariously from Rex that Trump is best left to his own devices.

By my reckoning yes. He never admitted calling Trump a moron. He gutted the State Department. Thousands of capable people left or retired out. Many with careers of experience in very specific areas. Irreplaceable people.

From less that a hour ago understanding that I have been highly critical of the generational warfare we boomers have conducted through Washington for over a decade and as well have been highly critical of the expansion of the war by the current Congress almost from the day that it was announced:

As soon as they can the D's will change the tax code back to the way they like it, constantly majorly changing the tax code is likely to be a constant now, with all the negative ramification anyone not stupid would predict from introducing yet more instability into America.
