Return to sender: Postal union warns of fallout if US leaves

No international letters, no international packages: A top official with a 192-country postal union says that's what Americans can expect if the Trump administration goes through with plans to pull out of an international postal treaty over concerns about China.

Pascal Clivaz, deputy director-general of the Switzerland-based Universal Postal Union, says the agency reached out quickly to U.S. officials after receiving a letter from U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo this week announcing Washington's plan to pull out of the union in a year if the treaty isn't renegotiated.

The U.S. says it's willing to renegotiate. But the threat is the latest sign of U.S. President Donald Trump's go-it-alone approach to many issues, from the environment to trade to the Iran nuclear deal.

"It will have dramatic consequences for American consumers. It will cost them enormously. They will be all alone against all the countries of the world," Clivaz told The Associated Press on Friday. "They won't even be able to send (a package) to a neighboring country. It's an accord that links everybody."

COMMENT:-

Who knew that mailing a letter could be so complicated?

Doesn't sound all that complicated. All the union needs to do is renegotiate and all is well.

It's insane. The whole world should dance to Trump's whimsy? Just No. The treaty dates back to the 1800's and suddenly it's a problem?

Renegotiate what? Funny how that is never mentioned....

---I can't wait till Trump starts threatening international telecommunications, should be fun!

This thread gives us lots of information. First, the policy "idea" of pulling out the international postal treaty is about the stupidest idea, from an administration basking in stupid ideas. But what is most telling is Trump supporter's knee-jerk defense of the stupid idea.

Trump could declare he is mandating all post offices install disco balls and they’d still figure out a way to convince themselves it’s not stupid.

That guy's demented. He says foreign postal services need to charge their people the same that the US Post charges Americans?

You guys may have to heed the dictates of a demented buffoon but the rest of the world doesn't have to.

You didn't read the OP's article, did you?

Moving on...

Yeah...fair and balanced is demented.

You guys may have to heed the dictates of a demented buffoon but the rest of the world doesn't have to.

And yet, that union is the one crying at the thought of the US leaving the union.

No, it isn't what he's saying.

I did and it does not mention specifics at all of why the US wants to pull out when there has been renegotiating going on for a while and considerable progress has been made. It aint perfect, but Rome was not built overnight.

And let's be clear here... this is about packages pure and simple coming from Chinese Internet sites to the west.

This ain't a problem for UPS, Fed Ex and so on but for companies like the US postal service. Because China until recently was by the treaty considered a 3rd world country, then the rich 1st world countries were in essence subsidising mail coming from the 3rd world. Problem is of course China has changed since the treaty was put in place and for the last few years there has been changes so that China Post pays much more than it use too. It is not full price yet and I agree it should be...but there is a larger picture here.

If the US or anyone pulls out of the treaty then no shipping company like Fed Ex, can send packages or mail to and from the US. The Postal Union treaty is so much more than postal rates..

What Trump is threatening to do is to cut off the whole leg because you happen to have a hang nail...

Yet again Trump shows the world what a bully he and the US has become.

That is exactly what he is saying....or more specific that China needs to pay full price... which I personally don't disagree with but as stated the Postal Union Treaty is more than the price of a letter/parcel with US Postal.

That's what he's saying. Past administrations said the same thing. President Trump is the first one to exhibit the nads to actually do something about it.

I really don't think that the other 191 countries are all that concerned about being able to mail stuff to the US or whether the US can mail stuff to them.

I mean, after all, it isn't as if all of the international mail went from country of origin, to USA, then to country of destination or anything like that - is it?

Or do you know something about how the UPU works that no one else in the world knows?

PS - Did you know the prime reason why the UPU "uniform rate" is "unfair" to the United States of America?

It's because the USPS is inefficient and costs more to run on a "per item" basis than the postal services in other countries. (In short, Mr. Trump wants the rest of the world to subsidize an inefficient and non-cost/effective American industry. [Which shouldn't surprise you in the least.].)

Trump could declare he is mandating all post offices install disco balls and they’d still figure out a way to convince themselves it’s not stupid.

Well, the advertising campaign from "The Real Patriotic True Patriotic American Patriotic Disco Ball Patriotic Manufacturing Company" wouldn't hurt.

Well, it's the opinion of a union guy that considerable progress has been made. The Trump administration has a different opinion.

The article cited the Trump administration extensively. Do I need to provide you quotes?

shrug...

If their position was all that secure, then why are they crying about the notion that the US might leave the union?

LOL

Post Office wants to dictate the market?

People like you will never ever understand, but continue on with ignorant comments anyways.

FedEx and UPS has every right to grab their share of the shipping market.

nae great loss i stopped ordering stuff from the US over a decade ago due to the length of time my goods would sit on either side of customs and then there was/is the customs charges ... it ain't worth the hassle or cost

shrug...

because of the disruption unnecessarily caused to a functioning system by crass idiocy? Who knows?

Evidently the system isn't functioning all that well if US manufacturers like it that Trump is doing something about the situation.

Maybe it functions to benefit others? But doesn't function to benefit Americans?
