You can refuse service to anyone on an individual basis, but when you refuse based off ethnicity, religion, gender etc you open yourself up to a legal world of hurt.

As long as the customers are polite, he does not have the right to deny their service in a public accommodation business. The fact that he may disagree with their political views is irrelevant.

He can close the business and board it up temporarily but if it is open then he has to serve everyone who walks in the door and who is respectful. He might want to think about hiring private security such as off-duty cops if he is worried.

Maybe he should try to be part of the peaceful solution instead of being part of the problem of violence and racism.

If you own or work in a shop you have to serve everyone or nobody.
I can't open a shop and refuse to serve anyone who votes Republican for example.
You can refuse to serve someone who you suspect is going to steal but again I can't just make a blanket decision and claim I'm refusing all Republicans because I've decided they're all going to rob me.

Being openly racist and hostile to an entire section of the community at a time of tension also isn't helping anyone.
