Researchers alter embryo in such a way it could one day permanently change human DNA | National Post

It is coming.Researchers edited a non-viable embryo’s genome to remove a gene that causes thalassemia, a serious blood disorder that can cause anaemia and even death.
The study, published in Protein and Cell, employs a relatively new method to remove trouble-making genes from the genome called CRISPR/Cas9. It’s previously been successful in animal tests, and it has been tested on human DNA before, but those studies did not alter what’s called the human “germ line” — what any theoretical baby would pass onto future generation through its eggs or sperm.
