Some children (as in, 5 or younger) do accidentally eat the pods. They are colorful, they vaguely resemble candy, and kids put everything in their mouths.

Eating Tide Pods is simply a joke, that you don't seem to get. A handful of idiots have made online videos of things like this; Americans have done equally stupid things to get attention for decades (e.g. "America's Funniest Home Videos").

Lots of people think it's funny to bombard P&G's / Tide's Twitter feed with claims that they ate a pod. As one might imagine, P&G cannot afford to treat a joke like it's a joke, and those same Twits think the serious response is also amusing. Again, nothing really new here.

The only thing that's changed is that people have a global platform for being silly.

Otherwise, the fundamental nature of humanity has not, in fact, changed over time. I.e. You may now stop yelling at the kids on your lawn.
