Protesters topple Silent Sam Confederate statue at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, NC
Protesters toppled the Silent Sam Confederate statue on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill on Monday night.

A damned shame. Hateful people destroying things that they say cause and signify hate - anyone else see the irony here? My grandfather and my youngest son attended that university. My my grandfather's grandfather and 3 great-uncles fought in that war. I've read their diaries, and they didn't fight for what the left and the extreme right try to say they fought for. Where does it end? Tear down the White House, it was built by slaves. Tear down the Washington Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial? What about the city of Washington, DC?

It's just a damned shame. I hope all the students that were involved are kicked out of school, and prosecuted. Any other low-life's that are not students but were involved should also be prosecuted.

God, this pisses me off.

Radical idiots are not to be supported or placated or ignored or honored. These people's actions are not protected by the First Amendment, or basic moral or ethical standards of civility.

I hope the idiots who committed this crime are arrested and prosecuted, fully.

I don't understand why people get so TRIGGERED over dumb statues. Were you born near the statue or something???

I don't understand why people get so TRIGGERED over dumb statues. Were you born near the statue or something???

You support terroristic actions and destruction of public and private property, as well as the destruction of historical monuments that depict our past - the ugly truth but still our past?

BTW, I don't know WTF you think the flaccid word "TRIGGERED" has to do with my reacting to violent criminal activity. Why do you support violent criminal activity and obviously feel it should be applauded and lauded rather than called out for what it is?

You don't understand the difference between violent criminal activity and protest do you? Also it's a statue. You can't terrorize a statue. Maybe schools should be teaching history more instead of keeping up their dumb statues to immortalize racism. I think his statue should be replaced with him getting whipped. That would be more accurate.

I don’t know what is preventing the from enforcing the law. Is everyone scared ****less of Antifa?

It looks to me like this was a "sanctioned" action. For that many people to assemble in the dark, with bull horns ...

People will have known the reason for so many to show up and what was going to happen, but they will pretend this was a "spur-of-the-moment" action ... sort of like Benghazi-spur-of-the-moment, where officials had "no idea" prior to the action.

Besides being a part of that universities history, whether you call that history good or not it was none the less part of it. Despite numerous protests demanding it be taken down, they could legally do no such thing as state law prohibited it.

You got to be kidding? Watch the video and tell me again that this was not a violent criminal activity.

Also it's a statue. You can't terrorize a statue.
Again, watch the video. They were chanting threats, and there was a young man at the end that was being threatened on the video. Jesus - you seriously have to be kidding?

The statue doesn't immortalize racism. The school doesn't have control over the statue.

Seriously, read the OP articles, watch the freaking video, and try to educate yourself on the thread topic before posting such ignorant posts.

I will LMAO when one of the anarchist have a statue land on them.

It had been going on from earlier in the day. The cops had pushed back and tried to get it under control, but then it seems like the cops just disappeared when the sun went down.

From earlier today - NSFW.

How about having a band play while "questionable and offensive" history books are burned and thrown in a pyre.
That is exactly what is happening now.
Burning the books they find offensive is merely phase two.

Mob actions are never justified.

1. Doesn't sound like violent criminal activity to me.
“I’m really glad that when it happened, it did not involve a great deal of bloodshed,” Carter said. “I am stunned that it happened when it happened. I am really amazed that as far as I can see, nobody got clobbered, nobody got banged up.”

2. You really don't know what a protest is do you?

3. Yeah it does.
Carr went on to boast to the crowd that "one hundred yards from where we stand," soon after his return from Apomattox, "I horse whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds because she had maligned and insulted a Southern lady, and then rushed for protection to these University buildings where was stationed a garrison of 100 Federal soldiers. I performed the pleasing duty in the immediate presence of the entire garrison."[11]

I'd be fine with those responsible for vandalism prosecuted for their crimes - they committed the crimes in front of the police. That's the choice they made.

But I'm not sorry to see the monument come down. They were built at least in part as monuments to white supremacy. The speech at the dedication makes this clear enough:

Transcription: Carr Speech - Hilary N. Green, PhD

First a little overt white supremacy:

The present generation, I am persuaded, scarcely takes note of what the Confederate soldier meant to the welfare of the Anglo Saxon race during the four years immediately succeeding the war, when the facts are, that their courage and steadfastness saved the very life of the Anglo Saxon race in the South – When “the bottom rail was on top” all over the Southern states, and to-day, as a consequence the purest strain of the Anglo Saxon is to be found in the 13 Southern States – Praise God.

Followed right away about what white supremacy meant in practice.

I trust I may be pardoned for one allusion, howbeit it is rather personal. One hundred yards from where we stand, less than ninety days perhaps after my return from Appomattox, I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds, because upon the streets of this quiet village she had publicly insulted and maligned a Southern lady, and then rushed for protection to these University buildings where was stationed a garrison of 100 Federal soldiers. I performed the pleasing duty in the immediate presence of the entire garrison, and for thirty nights afterwards slept with a double-barrel shot gun under my head.

Nice, the dedication was by a white supremacist who found it "pleasing" to brutally horse whip a "negro wench".

I'll lose zero sleep and my give a **** meter won't register that this statue and many others like it will come down. The only regret is those doing it didn't do it legally. If they had I'd be giving them unreserved congratulations.

Well if the school cared that much they can always make a new one. Methinks the pissant politicians will just cower in fear and not do anything about it.

How do you "non-violently" destroy property that isn't yours?

A protest does not include violence or destruction - a riot does.

I posted the Wiki article in the OP, BTW.

Why do you support violence and property destruction and terroristic tactics and are now also defending those as if they are protected by the First Amendment?

Opinions of why a certain thing exists do not define how everyone must also. We cannot define what we are today by what happened 105 years ago, or 150 years ago.

We must not fall prey to the idiocy of believing that we must destroy our past to save our future.

Let's see who gets arrested then. I wanna bet nobody. How about you?

You honestly believe that no one will get arrested? Wow. How far will you actually go to defend the indefensible?

People already have been arrested. Look at the video I posted in Post 12.

Or how about letting a mob publicly horse whip a "white wench" of whom objected to the statue being torn down to even the score?
Shall we have a POLL to see how many would approve of this too?
That white racist slept with a shotgun because he needed to. I hope the bastid met justice one day.

These current white racists also hate white people and feel just as justified as that bastid did.
Don't think for one second they have "love of country" at heart.
They just want to cause a second civil war and hate the United States.

These same people that tear down statues also burn American flags.
They hate this country and want to see it torn apart and are doing their best to see it happen.
Trump hate is just a wave they are riding on. In four or eight years they will find some other wave to ride.
Bringing down the United States is their main goal.

Oh will Silent Sam get an honroable twitter mention from the Swampy Troll who won't do a thing about it too?

What are you talking about now? I don't give a **** what Trump does about this. He has dick all to do with me or what I'm talking about. I mean the NC capital in Raleigh, not DC.

Oh one person.... Stop being such a drama queen.

I don't see the Governor calling for arrests. So we'll just have to wait and see:

Governor Roy Cooper's office shared a statement Monday night. It said, "Governor Cooper has been in contact with local law enforcement and UNC officials regarding tonight's rally and appreciates their efforts to keep people safe. The Governor understands that many people are frustrated by the pace of change and he shares their frustration, but violent destruction of public property has no place in our communities."
