Protesters call for removal of Christopher Columbus statue

Various civilizations already exited in the Americas before Columbus arrived. I think you just mean the establishment of European civilization.

Agreed, but those cultures did not provide what we associate with civilization. Nomadic hunting and gathering does not provide a sound foundation for the growth of human enterprise.

Boy, you really dont know much about history eh? So the Aztecs, Mayans, Incas were "late stone age" peoples?

Why don't you answer the question I originally posed to you? My knowledge of history is at least equal to yours, and probably well exceeds it. Explain how the removal of a statue will cure any of the problems you mentioned in your first post here.

Statues are for honoring and celebrating people. Books are for remembering and learning history. We didn't forget what happened in Nazi Germany because statues and giant swastikas were torn down.

Hmmmm....When were Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, or Flossenburg torn down....I mean, after all they are in the books right?

Yes. Your point?

Yes. Your point?

Good grief....When did it become standard debate tactic to have to explain what YOU said, back to you? *Sigh....Anyway, You said in the post I responded to, that "Statues are for honoring and celebrating people. Books are for remembering and learning history." Well, people are moving in this country now to remove (whitewash) history, and that includes, or starts if you will removing statues....For example what happens when, if successful the statues are removed? what do we move on to next? Do we change the names of buildings? cities? Do we go to Mt. Rushmore, or Stone Mountain and remove the faces of those on those monuments? Because we just can't bear to go through our day knowing that these things stand....

It is IMHO, a kind of "snowflakeism" that we saw manifest first on these College campuses over speakers that the faculty, and students didn't agree with ideologically, so they were shouted down, and or protested with violence against those wanting to attend, or campuses that allowed them to speak....

It is dangerous, and bordering un American if you ask me...

Columbus shouldn't be celebrated. Mass murder aside, he was **** at his job.

The dude died honestly believing he'd found a way to India. Why does he have a holiday?

We will turn into a totalitarian government led by Democrats if this keeps up.

Statues of slavers and murderers are the only thing standing between you and totalitarian government?

Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October. The date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as the DÃ*a de la Raza (Day of the Race) in Latin America and some Latino communities in the USA. However, it is a controversial holiday in some countries and has been re-named in others.

Clearly you don't get, or are purposely muddying the debate dishonestly....typical of the progressive left.

I think the debate here is not about "curing ills," but more about the folly that we have embarked upon with the removal of monuments. Glass houses/stones and the like>

I think you are right. And you have to wonder what historical figure could pass this modern day purity test.

I guess if it's necessary we'll have that discussion. In any case, if a statue of Robert E. Lee comes down in the South, I'll still know that he commanded the Confederate Army in a war to preserve the right to own other human beings, and so will my descendants, because we both have books, the internet and documentaries. By the way, I knew who Robert Lee was and I never saw a statue of him in my life.

You say "snowflakeism," but the one who's triggered is clearly you.

Well no it is not. Christopher Columbus is a strange one in history and not exactly a saint.

On the one hand he said "screw you, I will go west to find India" and stumbled on the Americas and claimed to have found new land. He was not the first to find the Americas, that was the Vikings centuries before.

But the consequences of what he did both directly and especially indirectly lead to genocide of the local population. Yes it was in part out of ignorance on diseases but there was also subjugation of natives who were deemed subhuman by the Church.

So one has to question, what exactly are you celebrating by honoring Christopher Columbus? Mass murder in the name of religion? Dumb luck on re-finding a continent? Or is it a celebration of how brave people like him were to map the world? Dunno if all the "good" he did is enough to celebrate considering the genocide he caused.

I'm kinda glad the Americas were colonized. The United States is the greatest country in human history. It turned out to be a win for Earth.

So......is it time for the we told you so's yet?

"I'm kinda glad that Earth's native species were eliminated and colonized by the inhabitants of planet ZorctB13. ZorctB14 eventually became the seat of the greatest intergalactic empire the universe had ever seen."

Do you hate America?

From the Columbus, Ohio NBC affiliate:
Protesters gathered in front of Columbus City Hall on Saturday to call for a statue of the city's namesake to be taken down.

Tynan Krakoff is the lead organizer of Showing Up For Racial Justice, the group putting on this rally, and said the statue of Christopher Columbus represents some of the bad in American history.

"We're calling on the city council, the mayor, and the city of Columbus to removed the statue, said Krakoff to NBC4 on Friday.

Some marchers draped a banner over the Columbus statue that read "TOPPLE WHITE SUPREMACY NOW."

This is lunacy. Hysteria.

Greetings, nota bene. :2wave:

:agree: So it's Christopher Columbus, a white European, who is at fault for discovering America, so we need to take his statue down? Actually history tells us that another white male, a Viking of European Germanic heritage, actually discovered America first, but that's not my argument here.

The group that calls itself "Showing Up for Racial Justice," has gone way beyond what passes for rational thinking, IMO, so I have to ask :WTH does race have to do with it other than apparent resentment that their ancestors didn't discover America? The continent wasn't hidden and somebody was bound to find it, so how were they spending their time while others were discovering new continents?

Vikings contributed exactly nothing to the development of the New World, hence the creation of the United States. That's the reason there's a national holiday honoring Columbus and not some mythical Viking.

Christopher Columbus I can understand. He was a genocidal maniac.

Agreed, but those cultures did not provide what we associate with civilization. Nomadic hunting and gathering does not provide a sound foundation for the growth of human enterprise.

Nomadic hunting and gathering existed throughout North America, there were civilizations with everything we associate with civilization in Europe. Written language, number systems, farming, holy books etc existed throughout Central and South America. One civilization had guns, the other didn't. That's the point you're trying to make here.

You were wrong about the establishment of civilization in the Americas. Don't dig deeper by claiming that civilization means having guns.

You are aware Columbus never set foot on land that would become the U.S. and he murdered hundreds of thousands of people?

That he never set foot on North American soil, yeah, but that he murdered hundreds of thousands of people sounds like a fairy tale.

How many Indians were killed under the Lincoln and Grant Administrations?

Yep, a controlled speech utopia is what we want. Don't forget, we're waging war on Christmas. Also, Hillary Clinton would like to come take your guns away this week. What day's good for you?
