I read an article a short while back making the argument that the Southwest's great plains were once heavily forested and the Native Americans burnt the forests to gain grazing area for the buffalo. I have no idea that that is the case, but there are lot of petrified trees in the Southwest.

If that's true then it's a huge example of humans altering the environment to suit their needs.
